The SUV is parked very close to a production of The Lion King on 45th Street. Women in evening gowns were among the crowd on one of the warmest nights of the year and the busiest night of the week for Broadway theatres in the area.

It was obviously a statement about women in gowns going to Broadway shows! Their cleavage caused something to spark in that van, it is the only logical explanation. /sarc
Amazing these things never go off in America, they work fine everywhere else.
I don't know the location, but I read somewhere that the vehicle was parked right outside an enlistment/recruiting center.

My bet is that this was done entirely by one person, angry about something.

As a side note, I just watched a press briefing by the Mayor etc.
What struck me were the press questions. Almost all of them had been covered by the mayor or police and in some cases those same questions were even asked yet again after that, so the same info was dealt with 3 times.
Heard very often in the briefing was the mayor saying "As I've said before...".

Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered.
