Do we really want...

...to keep on paying for all of this theatrical political window dressing?

"That its holder, while representing Canada, gives more rein to personal impulses — however admirable, rather than expressing what is the declared will of the country’s people as made plain through its Parliament."

"I have a feeling this consideration will be greatly operative in the search for a successor to Madame Jean."
I know I could live without it.

If a republic, are we gonna do it right - or are we gonna have a "politician's republic" like Ireland, India, Pakistan, Israel and what was proposed for Australia - all Westminster parliamentary republics.

I mean, if the Grits followed through on John Manley's plea for a republic, we would've had five years of President Jean Chretien. Does anybody (besides "lib-sup") want that?

In Ireland, India, Pakistan and Israel, politicians in the "House of Commons" equivalent usually vote for their ex-PMs to become President. It's a time of calling political favours, cronyism, and general sausage-making.

I don't think the Katzav scandal was a good thing for Israel - and the scandals' damage was not helped by the fact that Mr. Katzav was the President. Same with President Mary Robinson in Ireland. (Google "Mary Robinson+United Nations".)

Either "one man, one vote" in a competitive national election, or King William V.

the fact is... the governor-generalship has turned into a politically correct, affirmative-action program for female, foreign-born, ex-employees of the cbc.

madame jean's ignorance about the way the world really works is simply breathtaking.

no more pc bullshit... and no more expensive, archaic political theatre.
