In an interview, he said the change with the health sector doesn’t make any material difference to government because the province would collect the increased tax anyway.

But a March 22 briefing note written for the health authorities shows the fledgling agency was hastily restructured in large part because of the coming tax change.

The backlash is fueled by the timing of the tax shift. Prior to the provincial election last April, the B.C. Liberals denied they were considering the HST. But two months after winning re-election, Mr. Hansen announced B.C. would harmonize its sales tax with Ottawa.
