G&M's Celebration of Celebrity
Don't think of them as millionaire jet-setting, limousine-liberals... they're just simple anti-poverty activists... regaling us with such hopeful tales as... and I quote... "Africa's Golden re-Boot."
I can't help but think though... a few other stories may have fallen through the cracks...
-- NAIROBI, Kenya -- Attackers in Burundi chopped off the limbs of a 5-year-old albino boy and pulled out his mother's eye, killing them over the belief that their body parts would bring wealth and success, human rights activists said Friday. Not sure that this little newsroom stunt actually does anything to improve anybody's life... but I'm guessing the filagree on Bono's eyeglasses would feed a family of five for the better part of a year.
Pony up, B.

even uber-dipper stephen lewis knows that what africa needs isn't more celebrity endorsements... it's tough love...
"Up to 800 people a day die of Aids in South Africa, Mr Lewis said. South Africa's Aids policy is "more worthy of a lunatic fringe than of a concerned and compassionate state," he said.
hope, change & diamond studded jockstraps... thank you, globe & mail.

The west has given Africa (not Africans) over $1 trillion over the last 50 years or so. Most of it appears to have been deposited in back in Swiss banks. Yeah, lets give more...
BTW, here's a perfect example of the Bono effect at work: malaria kills just as many Africans, if not more, than AIDS. Mosquito nets are a good defense. But when they are given away, they are seen as being not worth much (just like giving away sleeping bags to the "homeless" in Toronto, most are thrown out, barely used, because there are always more coming). They are actually used more for other things, like fishing nets.
So, someone had an idea to sell the nets. Usage went up, because there was a value. Funny how that works. And Africans become employed making the nets.
Then, Bono gives away "free" nets again, which has the incredibly predictable effect on those making the nets for a (very small) profit:
