I, for one, am just a little apprehensive...

...about our new silicon overlords...

If your Bell-supplied Mi-Fi cellular Wi-Fi modem died yesterday, here’s why: The batteries in some MiFi 2372 units are swelling and causing malfunctions.

Bell, in order to keep you from using the modem, has reached into your device from afar and remotely disabled it. Between 10PM and 11.59PM Eastern on May 3rd (last night), all units were killed.
Remote kill capability, huh? In something as innocuous as a modem?

Does that mean that Dalton McGuinty can reach out and turn off my electricity through that shiny new "smart meter" they just installed on the side of my house? I seem to recall something about them being able to shut off heavy loads like air-conditioners or furnaces.

Hmmm... maybe I'd better get out there and cut a little more wood.

Still a few flies in the ointment?

Let's face it: with IP addresses for almost everything now, you aren't safe to turn on your toaster without someone knowing if you are using white or brown bread.

the fact is... hydro ontario & it's various appendages aren't exactly famous for their frugality...

"The Ontario Power Authority has gone from 15 staff to more than 300, of whom 75 make more than $100,000 a year."

maybe that accounts for why my hydro bill just jumped 10% and there's another scheduled increase in november.

and, curiously... all those recent commercials showing people talking about why they don't mind paying more for electricity just seem to skip over the hydro chairman's... 2.1 million dollar salary.

funny how that works.

Neo,

I was at a green energy seminar a couple weeks ago put on by the PEO. One of the speakers was from my local utility. He stated outright that they could turn off anyone supply remotely at will. They are also flogging a free programmable thermostat that will allow them to cut off your AC during peak load times. The other speakers were a UofG wind power expert, and a local solar panel manufacturer, but they are a whole differnt story. Let's just say that even though they are both strong propnents of their respective technologies, they basically confirmed the worst fears of the 'deniers', and confirmed that Dalty Lyin' McGuinty is possibly the stupidest human ever born

Yeah, funny how the "it will pay for itself" crowd can never explain why costs keep going UP.
