Hey, Paul... here's a thought

Maybe your, uh, clients... could stop maiming, murdering and generally preying on the rest of us...

Wouldn't that help out with this thorny jail problem?

“These are people awaiting trial, presumed innocent, and held in crowded tension-filled holding jails,” said Paul Stern, a Toronto criminal lawyer.

“The ‘two-for-one' principle attempted to recognize the ghastly conditions, mandatory delays, and to provide some balancing for the delays.
Those poor, unfortunate sociopaths.

ASK JOE SIXPACK:
"Do you support the federal government's plan to limit 'two-for-one' credit for prisoners who serve time in pretrial detention?"

Maybe it isn't that the jails are too "ghastly". Maybe its because the prisons are, by comparison, too posh...

"ghastly"?? I would like to see remand changed also, something along the lines of what Sheriff Joe Arpeaio has done in Arizona. As long as we are on this page how about doing away with "concurrent" sentances also, kill one or a dozen same sentance, what is with t
hat?
cheers Bubba

You the man Neo-mouse, ditto. In fact we should do away with that presumption of innocence, they're all guilty anyways. Then we what that annoying anonymous suggests and turn the prison population into a slave workforce, we could hire them out and under cut the unions and force thousand of people out of work and create more people desperate to break the laws, and make more prisoners. It's great! Businesses get really cheap labour, and we do away with our messy legal system too. Saving all the way around.

You da man Neo-mouse, you da man

ah, yes... the indisputable wisdom of anonymous trolls

thus commences, under yet another alias, liberal supporter's daily bombing of the comment threads... elucidating, in great detail, how unimportant i am in his life.

and, of course, he comes down squarely on the side of the scum of the earth.

of course, this has absolutely nothing to do with "presumption of innocence" or "slave labour"... but that's just how libby pretends to debate.

not word one about the issue, which is "two for one pre-trial dead time".

no surprise there, huh libby? or should I say cc?

p.s. - i do like the picture.

I just love how the criminal lawyer brings up presumption of innocence.

I needn't remind the good lawyer that two-for-one is established at sentencing, which is after the guilty verdict. There is no presumption of innocence anymore.

BC's chief justice did an interview in support of the criminals a little ways back, which reflects the hug-a-thug mentality of the criminal defence lawyers:

i've just finished reading a book about pioneer life in upper canada... and back then they had a thing called the "stump law".

if you were caught, for instance, drunk in public causing any sort of mayhem... you could be sentenced to pulling up stumps... which back then littered the landscape... for a set period of time.

now, lemme tell you, in the eight years we've lived here, i have never successfully removed a stump on my own. it is so physically demanding that i just bring in a sixty dollar per hour backhoe... and consider it money well spent.

so, what say we commence reforming our hug-a-thug prison system.

and for starters... let's get rid of all the weightlifting equipment and bring back the "stump law"?

Neo:

I've removed a stump from by backyard last year - the tree was only about twelve inches in diameter but it took almost four hours of shoveling and chopping to get it (and most of the roots) out. Great work for those who need to learn about respect for society and fellow man.

Simple law - you don't work, then the clock on your sentence doesn't tick.

No one is talking about getting rid of presumption of innocence.

What we're talking about is the guy who kills someone or rapes someone getting 1 week in jail simply because his sentence was reduced due to time already spent counting for double...

The real problem is that people like nonny-mouse have never experience the above or have had close friends experience it, only to feel like they were raped all over again by a system that says "the rape you suffered means nothing to us."

And then the idea of someone else being a victim in a few weeks when the perp gets out again...
