Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said Tuesday his finance minister would consider a so-called scrappage program in the government's March 26 budget to encourage people to buy new cars.**********
The program would give consumers a $3,500 rebate or credit for trading in a vehicle that's at least 11 years old for a new one. The federal government already gives consumers a $300 scrappage credit, but the amount is so minimal that hardly anyone uses it, according to Mondragon.
Giving consumers incentives to buy new cars, rather than bailouts to automakers, is the best way to rescue the troubled auto sector, he added.

"They can't do this. Everyone will use it to buy a Non-Union car!"*
