worth a thousand words
The US federal government does not have the authority to regulate BUT they do have the authority to TAX. When first formed ATF was part of the US Treasury. Booze and smokes were taxed and there is still a $200 transfer tax on Class 3 firearms as well as an excise tax on small arms ammunition.Of course this makes the raid on the Davidians in Waco a mere tax raid but ... that was the only authority ATF had to be there.
Hey at least down there they treat citizens like adults and let them provide for their own self defence...
*"langmann says... at least down there they treat citizens like adults"as someone who once held a new york state ccw permit... i'd have to agree.the nanny state here in canada is a pale imitation of the land of the free in many respects.*
@ LS:Who said anything about being a vigilante? Except for you...Did you even read the case I posted? You think rape of a woman is alright? In this country you cannot prepare for self defence - carrying any reasonable weapon for self defensive purposes, such as a firearm, is illegal. If you happen to manage to struggle your way out of a bad situation and kill or harm the criminal than the criminal code will allow you to use self defence as an excuse, sure. (Many people have used firearms for self defence in this country, estimates range as high as 20,000 cases a year, (Mauser) the vast majority don't involve discharge of the firearm. I am intimitely familiar with this situation.)Discharging a firearm in the US for self defence requires the same set of circumstances as here, immediate fear of bodily harm to self. You can also protect your property here in Canada using non-lethal force. If someone attacks you while doing so, that changes the whole matter to self defence. Personally I wouldn't use a firearm to attack someone who stole my ipod. You might since you're the one thinking about it. However if someone was threatening me with a weapon or someone close to me then I would defend myself. Why shouldn't I or anyone else for that matter? Why shouldn't I have that ability if I so chose? Why shouldn't my wife? The difference between here and there is you have to be lucky to have the option of self defence here, while in the US you can prepare responsibly for it.
