Good news guys!

I hear the hooker lobby is already "hard at work"... on a government funded "fellatio coupon" initiative...

Should we be giving free heroin to addicts? Don't choke. Researchers in Vancouver say yes.

And they've just spent $8-million in public money to prove their case. Last month, after concluding a landmark clinical trial, they announced that the best way to treat hard-core heroin addicts is: Give them more heroin!

They argue that methadone, a much safer treatment, doesn't work with this crowd. But free heroin makes them happier, healthier and less inclined to steal so they can get their next fix.
Call me crazy... but how about we spend taxpayer dollars on folks who actually care if they live or die.

"Personally I think if we are going to go this way we may as well have an island where we send any drug addict, and drop drugs by plane. It would probably reduce crime to a greater extent and harm addicts as much as any other government program proposed."

hmm.. and I bet pedophiles would be happier and less inclined to kidnap and molest young children if we just supplied them with a ready supply of tots to keep them occupied.

"roblaw says... a ready supply of tots"

are we also gonna be running around skidrow... handing out taxpayer funded whiskey to alcoholics?

what about chocolate fudge brownies for the morbidly obese?

Translation: in my experience they don't like methadone because it lacks the mind numbing high of heroin. Suddenly they have to live in the real world where consequences matter and their life is pretty much rock bottom.

My personal problem with prescribing heroin is the medical aspects surrounding the dose. Personally I am very reluctant to prescribe a medication that could easily kill someone if they take too large a dose. Moreover their addiction or tolerance increases so that their required doses can be extremely high. I am not willing to lose my license because someone overdosed on prescribed heroin for addiction.

Methadone is not prescribed by any physician, you have to have a special license and training for it. Moreover it is prescribed with the goal of terminating its use with a weaning process.

I cannot personally see many GPs or Emergency Physicians buying into prescribing heroin based upon both the medical risk aspects, and legal aspects.

Hence you will have the same problem that we all have in Canadian medicine. A big waiting list to get to see a physician who prescribes heroin, just like hip surgery. Others will wait in the cold and buy their heroin off of addicts who've had a large amount prescribed.

As usual what sounds like great theory in practice will be an absolute disaster, mark my words.

Personally I think if we are going to go this way we may as well have an island where we send any drug addict, and drop drugs by plane. It would probably reduce crime to a greater extent and harm addicts as much as any other government program proposed.
