In other non-sectarian "good news"
The "holy city" dodges another bullet...
Israeli secular politician Nir Barkat has defeated an ultra-orthodox rabbi to become the new mayor of Jerusalem.Separation of Church and State... never a bad thing.
Mr Barkat won outright with 52% of the vote while Meir Porush received 43%, according to final results released by Israel's interior ministry.
The hard-fought campaign has raised tensions between Israel's religious and secular Jews.

The issue of separation for Church and State only works if the people wish it. The Haredim community of Jerusalem is the single largest group in Jerusalem and they do not want a secular state but rather a state run under Jewish religious law. While I don't necessarily agree with the writer's position he is correct in noting only a division in the Haredim community lead to the election of a secular mayor.
I don't envy the mayor, and I suspect the writer is correct in suggesting the Haredim will brow beat more concessions out of a secular mayor than a Haredi mayor.
