The now infamous University of Ottawa...

...bastion of "not-so-free" speech...

“I’m pretty sure little Francois A-Houle does not need to travel with a bodyguard,” she said. “I would like to know when this sort of violence, this sort of protest, has been inflicted upon a Muslim — who appear to be, from what I’ve read of the human rights complaints, the only protected group in Canada."
It does appear, though... that Ms. Coulter may have found a solution to her dilemma...
"I think I’ll give my speech tomorrow night in a burka. That will protect me.”

Houle could not be reached for comment on Tuesday night.
I'll let Mrs N... (a graduate of U of T)... have the last word here... "This was about free speech? Why didn't they listen to what she had to say... and have a riot afterwards?"

RELATED: Hey, Francois...

You're gonna protest horrible injustice... how about you start with, I dunno... something like this...
Hundreds of women have rallied outside Yemen's parliament to show support for a law banning child marriages. The government proposed the law after the marriage of an eight-year-old girl to a 30-year-old man was annulled.

But some conservative Muslims are against the law being passed. On Monday a group of Islamic clerics issued a decree condemning the law, and said its supporters were apostates.
Yeah... Ann Coulter... there's our biggest problem.

LAST WORD: CBC over-torques another poll

Even after cherrypicking some of her most controversial soundbites & finding the most unflattering picture possible on the inter-tubes... another CBC vision quest goes horribly wrong...
"Should Ann Coulter weigh her words when speaking to a Canadian audience?"
Hey, Francois... you feelin' the love?

Ha ha, looks like the poll at the CBC is melting down..

Sad day for Canada that Ann Coulter has to teach us a lesson about free speech. (real conservative)

as a self-confessed lefty, i have nothing but contempt for coulter and her nasty mouth. she's nothing more than a freak show. however, the U of O should have allowed her to speak. i may not agree with what she has to say but i support her right to say it.

A spokesman for the organizers said about 2,000 "threatening" students posed a security threat to the darling of the American right, and she was advised against appearing.

"It would be physically dangerous for Ann Coulter to proceed with this event," said conservative political activist Ezra Levant.

We have the right to demonstrate. It was Coulter's people who shut it down. What's your deal buddy? We have to let Coulter shout her mouth off without uttering a word? The protests were legit. Coulter's a typical conservative, tough until she gets called on it. In any case, she has more balls than anonymous bloggers hiding behind gun icons and pseudonyms.

"anon says... she's nothing more than a freak show."

and coulter, a little more articulately, replies...

The tribunal should take her complaint seriously, she said, “because either Francois [Houle] has created a climate of hate against me based on my membership in an identifiable group – or the whole human rights commission is complete horseshit.”

“You guys used to be so cool. You were smokers. You had epic hockey fights. We had half our comedians from Canada. Now you’re all a bunch of girls named Francois.”

"gerald from toronto whines... We have to let Coulter shout her mouth off without uttering a word?"

is that what happened? a little "uttering"? not according to the reports i've read...

"FLASH: Ann Coulter Ottawa speech shut down... 2000 protesters surrounding building with rocks and sticks -- pulled fire alarm in building. Cops shut it down! Blogs calling for Coulter to be hurt. MPs were banned from going, Coulter denounced by an MP in the Parliament."

Gerry...sweetie - how come you self professed proponents of free speech demand it be shut down when you don't agree with it?

how come leftie's like the Fruit Fly Guy - David Suzuki can got to universities and call for jailing politicians for not acting on global warming and that is OK for you guys?

how come protests calling for the killing of jews are OK with you guys?

How come it is only OK when it is something you believe in, otherwise just shut it down, right?

Come on sweetie, you call yourselves progressive and open minded yet you condone violence against those who you don't agree with.

And you think right wingers are wrong? Sheesh.

Ann Coulter's people shut it down. I wish she did speak.

how come protests calling for the killing of jews are OK with you guys?

I happen to be Jewish so I certanily don't think killing jews is OK. Furthermore, in Canada, such actions are considered hate crimes and are illegal.

How come it is only OK when it is something you believe in, otherwise just shut it down, right?

Come on sweetie, you call yourselves progressive and open minded yet you condone violence against those who you don't agree with.

As I said, I felt she should have had the guts to speak. As for the so-called violence, no arrests were made and the demonstration was perfectly legal.

I fail to see how your use of diminutive nouns ie. Gerry, Sweetie, advance your position.

Ann Coulter is a crass opportunist more interested in selling books than real debate. She realized that she might be in for a rough ride in Ottawa and bailed. That pretty much says it all.

just finished listening to the coulter/u-ottawa debate on cbc radio and it was simply mind-boggling.

despite the best efforts of the host to start a conversation about censorship vs free speech... the students they talked to were all about the "hurt feelings" and "offensive words" that might have been uttered... had they actually allowed coulter to speak.

the woman hosting the programme also mentioned, more than once, that they had tried to get a statement from both francois houle & university president (and patronage appointee) and former liberal cabinet minister allan rock... to no avail.

no surprise there, i guess.

the fact is, these dumb bunnies just handed ms coulter a priceless publicity coup that she will be able to milk for years to come.

i love it.

p.s. -- gerry sweetie... how do you feel about "israeli apartheid week"... a yearly feature on so many canadian university campuses?

Neo: this is just more anti-logic logic from the loony left.

If she went on to speak, and somebody got hurt, or something was broken (I'm sure there was a Starbucks around...), it would be her fault, and the fault of the organizers, for not having enough security.

If they followed the not-really-veiled hints from the cops and shut it down, also her fault.

The loony left always wins because they don't really have any rules, just get their faces on the news.

BTW, I can't stand Coulter, and agree with Skippy that she's really just a bizarro world Michael Moore.

Gerald: ever hear the expression "the right to swing your fist ends at my nose"? The right for you to protest someone speak ends when you stop them from speaking. Get it? Want a first hand demonstration sometime?

Don't know about you Gary, sweety, but I'm ashamed of those students.

Ann may be caustic, but not any less than most of the conservative bloggers.

Like it or not, this has shown Canada and the world just how small minded and feeble your ideas and opinions are.

In my mind, those twits did more for the cause of getting rid of sec. 13, and freedom of speech than they ever could imagine.

Its called the law of unintended consequences. Ba wah

What escapes so many so-called friends of Israel is that we don't all share the same opinions. It is entirely possible to be critical of a particular Israeli government without being anti-Semitic,which I have been accused of being on many conservative blogs while criticizing specific government policies without identifying myself as Jewish.

In direct response to your question, I have no more problem with a legitimate group's agenda. In other words, I respect their right to boycott whatever they choose. You're all for Coulter denegrading Muslims, how do YOU feel about groups that denegrade Jews? Should they be allowed to speak? For all the screechy pro-lifers out there.... you support Coulter's right to spread her message but criticize the protestors that she fled from, do you have the same contempt for violent pro-life demonstrators? Or....is that different? Let's be honest, most conservative free speechers are so interested in freedom of speech and the exchange of ideas as they are in hiding behind it as an excuse to spread hatred.

Now remember, I think Coulter should have had her moment in Ottawa. Too bad she's afraid to actually walk the walk and talk the talk.

That's pretty funny. Are you threatening me? Should we meet after dark in the field behind the ol' Thompson place? Get a life chico.

"gerry sweetie says... Too bad she's afraid to actually walk the walk and talk the talk."

sorry gerry... it was the cops that shut this one down after your moonbat friends went over the edge.

and, hey... after reading this eyewitness account, i'm thinking about puttin' u-ottawa at the bottom of neophyte's list of educational opportunities...

"Someone started tearing pages out of a copy of Coulter’s latest book, and then tearing those into confetti which was then strewn about. This earned another round of cheers from those nearby."

"The protester group began chanting 'SODOMY! SODOMY!' with great enthusiasm. You think I’m making this up. I understand; I’d think that too."

hmmm... sounds like we're lucky nobody got hurt here.

gerry, sweetie... you're sure you wanna die on this particular hill?

Don't get your sphincter all clenched there, buttercup. I could only threaten you if I gave a damn about you, which I don't.

No, it was an honest question. You seem to think that protests of this type are just innocent venting. We both know that's bullshit. They tried to shut her down. That, you don't have a right to do.

Kinda like if a 300 pound skinhead asked if you were Jewish. He has that right, no? Would you say he's just curious, or would he have something else in mind?

Really, leave the disingenuous stuff to Dawg, he has an advanced degree in it.

Noticed your utter failure to answer a single question put to you. Die on this hill? It ain't even a bump rockstar.

"Someone started tearing pages out of a copy of Coulter’s latest book, and then tearing those into confetti which was then strewn about. This earned another round of cheers from those nearby."

Confetti? Grow a pair gunboy. You must be a gas at weddings.

"The protester group began chanting 'SODOMY! SODOMY!' with great enthusiasm. You think I’m making this up. I understand; I’d think that too."

GASP! But hey, you're all about free speech right? Yeah, that's what I thought. Missed your outrage when the honourable Republican statesmen called those engaging in legitimate law making called his colleagues "baby killers".

You sure you wanna die on this hill?

Mr. Goneaux? Learn to read before you start playing around with the intertoob. Guys like you get hurt in the real world.

"gerry yowls... You're all for Coulter denegrading(sic) Muslims, how do YOU feel about groups that denegrade(sic) Jews?"

no ger... i'm all for coulter having the right to her opinions... just as you should have the right to yours.

that's fair, isn't it? and i'm less concerned about the denigration than the actual jihad... the blowing up of people & stuff that is, my friend, the hallmark of radical islam.

and isn't denigration in the eye of the beholder anyway? are we talking about "hurtful words", again?

i mean... what do you find more offensive... the phrase "take a camel"... or the little muslima reading sock-puppeted questions off her blackberry... who also, incidentally, belongs to the "wipe israel off the map" facebook group?

you might also wanna step back & take a few deep breaths here... i don't want to see you stroke out & die on my watch.

over to you.

"gerry sweetie says... the Coulter Freak Show"

yup... the venerable "you're a big poopyhead" defense.

no answer to my question above... curious.

i think ezra has this one covered...

"The U of O indulges some of most offensive conduct in the country on their campus. Each year, for example, they happily host an anti-Semitic festival called Israel Apartheid Week. Never has Houle seen fit to issue a warning to his campus's steady stream of Jew-baiters to govern their tongues. In fact, to my knowledge, no left-wing activist has ever received a threat of criminal prosecution. Only Ann Coulter did."

"This is the sham of political correctness. It's not about civility. It's not about protecting groups from hate, or even violence. It's about politics and power."

none so blind, gerry. shalom.
