Oh, man... a little bit of "Hitler youth"...

...and everybody's all over your ass... go figure...

The letter, which was made available to Reuters by a source familiar with the initiative, is extremely rare because in the past it has mostly been Jewish groups and not Catholic academics who have written to popes about the issue.

The 18 Catholic scholars from United States, Germany and Australia, used the word “implore” twice in the letter, saying that if Pius was made a saint before the historical record is cleared up, it could irreparably harm Catholic-Jewish relations.
Of course, it isn't just Pius who has a bit of a sketchy past.
Benedict, a German who was drafted into the Hitler Youth and German army as a teenager during the Second World War, has had a more difficult relationship with the Jewish community than his predecessor Pope John Paul.
Geez... just can't figure where that animosity might've come from.

Meanwhile, in other Catholic-related news... yikers!!!

FROM THE COMMENTS:
"It has always seemed to me that 'Fucked If I Know' and 'It's All Because of a Giant Invisible Thing Whose Existence Can Neither Be Proved Nor Understood' express precisely the same thought in two different dialects, except ours is simpler."
Oh, you blasphemous unbeliever... may you be touched by his Noodly Appendage.

Amen.

Everyone of a certain age in WWII had to join the Hitler youth, it was mandatory. Some of my family members who were helping sneak Jews out of Germany through to Sweden were ironically forced to join that organization.

I don't begrudge the current pope for that.

ya think it might, however... make him just a tad more sensitive to that whole saint pius thing.

You'd think.

While he's at it, as an aboriginal Germanic person who's been dispossessed of his hereditary land by fascist internal colonialism and state sanctioned slavery I demand reparations from other German people. More significantly I demand amends under the UN charter for Aborignal People. Specifically I demand equal pay for equal status with my native Canadian aboriginal brothers - hence something like $30,000 a year would be appropriate.

Oh year, and the rights to hunt, produce and sell scnitzel tax free.

Also Pius' gang can give me my inheritence back any time.

How do you know the chaplain was Catholic? Not too many catholic priests called chaplains, am I missing something?

i've also been following the statements of the current chaplain-general... a man i used to know quite well.

Hey Shadow

Life must be rough to be such a bitter, lonely, pathetic turd like yourself.

Oh well wallow in you own bitterness, and hatred, like all good neo cons do

I can't speak for the other Anonymous(es?) but I don't think I was out of line. Well okay, did refer to you as Neo/Shadow. However, when I asked you to fix the links I did say PLEASE.

The article:

"it could irreparably harm Catholic-Jewish relations"

Aside from self-centered lobby groups does anyone believe that crud?

At the risk of commenting on topic - doesn't it seem weird to anyone that sainthood increasingly seems to be a perk associated with the papacy - like an incentive program or a celestial pension plan?

Hearings into the sainthood of Pope John Paul II seemed to start before his body was cold, and before any "miracles" accomplished in his name were reported. Eventually some guy was shot in the head, recovered, attributed his recovery to the mystical intervention of JPII, and presto.

It reminds one that we're not that far as a species from the days of magical charms, curses and incantations.

"balbull says... magical charms, curses and incantations."

hmmm... isn't that the very definition of religion?

Balbulican said...

The weirdly primitive strain of it, yeah. I cut some slack for smart believers for whom it's a slightly more sophisticated answer to the Big Questions of Life, Death and All That than what we atheists can come up with (which is basically a shrug, and a cheerful "fucked if I know, mate".)

But even for those folks, it ultimately comes down to belief in some kind of invisible thing that is willing to reverse the laws of physics, biology and causology if beseeched with sufficient humility.

whoa, bully... you just captured one of my core beliefs in one short sentence.

way to dawkins, pal.

Quite. It has always seemed to me that "Fucked If I Know" and "It's All Because of a Giant Invisible Thing Whose Existence Can Neither Be Proved Nor Understood" express precisely the same thought in two different dialects, except ours is simpler.

"How do you know the chaplain was Catholic?"

not only was this guy a catholic priest... apparently the church hierarchy knew about his, well... proclivities...

In late 2005, a family from Thunder Bay contacted former Saint-Boniface archbishop Monsignor Emilius Goulet with serious allegations involving Bazin.

The family said the retired chaplain had engaged in "inappropriate behaviour" with their 16-year-old son while living and helping out in Thunder Bay's Roman Catholic community after leaving the Canadian Forces, Father Léonce Aubin, chancellor of Saint-Boniface archdiocese, said in an interview.

Bazin was never sent for counselling or psychological evaluation, Aubin said. The incident also appears to have been hushed up in the church, which is extremely sensitive to alleged wrongdoing.
