Dick Zoutman, physician director of the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association of Canada, told The Globe and Mail that hospital-acquired infections are the fourth leading cause of death among patients.
Zoutman told the newspaper between 8,000 and 12,000 Canadians die from hospital-acquired infections every year.
