Ask a Liberal leadership candidate

Remember, these are the cream of the Liberal Party, the folks who said they were most qualified to keep Canada's financial books...

As of Tuesday -- that is, nearly seven years after the leadership race in which Liberals picked Stephane Dion to lead them -- four candidates still owed money.

Dion owed the least, at $7,500, while Ken Dryden still owed a hefty $225,000. Hedy Fry had $69,000 in outstanding debt while Joe Volpe had yet to repay $97,800.

The candidates were given several extensions of the original 18-month deadline to repay their loans.
Yet they still call themselves "honourable members." Can anybody tell me why?

I have sympathy for Volpe. Its hard to repay dead people and 5 year olds.

I don't have much sympathy for Dion, Fry and Volpe (I mean, Stephane, how hard is it to raise $7,500?), but I know Dryden has been in a bit of a different fight with EC. That debt is all his own. Rather than rip off the taxpayer, he used his own money. Then Harper changed the rules. So under Harper's rules, Dryden has go out and get other people to pay himself back. Which is dumb. And costs the taxpayers money in tax credits.

"anon says... Rather than rip off the taxpayer, he used his own money."

so, he can't forgive a debt to himself? sounds like there has to be something else going on there.

In the mean time the lame brained media and horsemen will keep going after Duffy for the $90,000 already paid back.

Nope. New rules require you to pay back the debt. If you don't or if you try to forgive the debt, then it is treated as a donation which would obviously be way over the limit.

This is the problem with laws that are written up quickly, without much discussion or though, specifically to screw over the other side.

Dion's "debt" is $7500? Two weeks salary as an MP. What's his problem? He could probably "raise" the money diddling his "living" expense account like all the other rent seekers in Ottawa.

Perhaps the most telling comment came from Dion himself who indicated he was surprised that the still owed any amount. So much for financial competency.

I believe the new rules allow the EC to fine the Party for the amount owing. But since it is the LPC, I'm sure there will be lots of waffling and excuses as to why they haven't applied the rules "just yet".

They must be hoping that the Young Dauphin wins in 2015, then they can administratively forgive the loans and put the story down the memory hole...

It gets worse, several Liberals were part of the AdScam and even with $140'000'000.00 still missing, NOT ONE of those MP weasels came forward to tell what they knew and when they knew it. Time top bring back public flogging so people like Chretien and Dalton McLiar will give up their addiction to steal tax dollars for their Political gains.

140 million still missing? What planet are you from?

loaning yourself money... what's the deal there?

“When you loan yourself money as a political candidate, that’s giving yourself money,” said Tyler Sommers, co-ordinator for Democracy Watch, a non-profit group that advocates for government accountability.

“That’s unethical, it’s unacceptable and it’s dangerously undemocratic.”

yup.
