Belleville - the good news is...

A 26-year-old Belleville woman is the latest person charged as Belleville Police target the city’s sex trade.

Police said a woman was arrested after soliciting an undercover officer downtown just after 2 a.m. She was released after promising to appear in court.

The bad news though... apparently the cops all get weekends off...

Though police said earlier this week they will release the names of all parties involved in prostitution cases, the woman’s name and court date were not immediately available and police could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Belleville police made good on a year-old promise Tuesday by naming two individuals charged with communicating for the purpose of prostitution.

Marie Rouleau, 42, and John Young, 40, both of Belleville, face charges following an incident in the city's downtown Sunday night. The pair were arrested shortly after 10 p. m. on Pinnacle Street.

Both were handed October court dates before being released.

Prostitution has become a problem in Belleville over the past year with at least 12 charges being laid over the course of six months in 2008.

Jim Hillier is seeking residents' signatures in hopes of persuading city council to change its current adult entertainment establishment bylaw which recognizes the former Doc's Palace as a strip club.

Council reinstated the bylaw, which had expired, earlier this month. City staff is reviewing the document and may recommend the property at the corner of Station and Bettes streets have its designation removed.

A former strip club in the city's east end may get a second lease on life thanks to a decision made by council regarding the municipality's adult entertainment bylaw pending provincial licensing approval.

Prior to discussing the bylaw, however, council heard from brothers Carlos and Robert Moniz, current owners of Doc's Palace. The pair told council they recently signed a lease with a Russian businessman who has plans of renovating and reopening the Station Street location.

Apparently... you can never have too many strippers.

...has terrifying encounter with "real world"...

"He didn't hear any of that," Quinlan said of the man she encountered. "He got upset and began mumbling that he would have to rob a gas station so he could get food."

Quinlan said she approached the man and told him there was no need to make such a statement and tried to explain to him that he and his wife would indeed get food but, she said, he did not seem to hear the explanation. Though the man was "irritated" he took a seat in the food bank's entranceway with other clients, she said.

Yeah... that's what I do when I get irritated... threaten to commit a violent felony.

Another client's attempts to lighten the tension with some jokes only further infuriated the man, she said, and he again began to berate staff members and called Quinlan a "bitch." Staff told the man he would have to wait outside as his wife would be served and he again launched into a tirade, Quinlan said.

"I can't even repeat all the filth he said," said the shaken food bank manager.

Apparently... this is a family affair... a multi-generational army of societal leeches. And note, if you will... HE STILL GOT HIS FREE FOOD.

At that point, police were contacted and the man agreed to wait outside. However, before police arrived, the man's son entered the building to help his mother carry the basket of food out and he too threatened Quinlan and other staff members.

The family left before police arrived.

One has to wonder why Quinlan is so surprised though... this sort of thing appears to be the order of the day. And don't call them "crazy-ass grifters"... these folks are "clients."

Tense moments are becoming more and more common at Gleaners due to an increase in demand, Quinlan said. Clients regularly become upset with one another, creating angry encounters with the possibility of violence, she said.

"It gets like this when we're busy. We understand people can get frustrated, but it's like everything else around here, sometimes it just spirals out of control."

Stewart, who had been called to the front of the building during Wednesday's incident, said he has witnessed similar moments in the past.

"I wouldn't say they're uncommon," he said. "Some of them defuse a little quicker, but it happens here."

So this family drives in from out of town to score free food. I sure hope Ms. Quinlan gave this poor man gas money to defray some of his expenses. Or, better yet... maybe they could courier him his free food every week.

Yessirree... build it and they will come... and come... and come...

If identity theft is the huge problem the media says it is... maybe the phone company shouldn't be allowing corporations to spoof other people's phone numbers.

A recent telemarketing-style poll, asking people how Daryl Kramp has performed as the area MP, caused major concerns for the local Conservative member.

It was not the results of the poll which caused Kramp to cringe but, instead, the fact that recipients of the phone calls were led to believe the call was coming directly from his constituency office on Millennium Parkway.

The calls were in fact originating from an Ottawa company hired by the Prince Edward-Hastings MP, but a clerical error resulted in Kramp's office number showing on telephones equipped with call display.

A spokesperson for Protus, who refused to give her name, said there was an error made when the phone calls were made and the number displayed "defaulted to (Kramp's) account phone number, which was his office number."

This seems like a huge hole for scammers and e-hackers to exploit. A boiler room scam that appears to be originating from your bank, or the local police station would have instant credibility to anyone with call display on their phone.

Anybody out there have any contacts at Ma Bell?

Mohawk deadline expires today

UPDATE: Too many threats, not enough Indians

Despite warnings of a protest by local Mohawks this week, Deseronto was quiet Monday with not a leaflet, barricade or poster in sight.

Extra Ontario Provincial Police officers were in the area Monday. But instead of traffic control around a demonstration site, they could be found in the local OPP office doing ordinary work.

Professional protester Shawn Brant's 60-day, "Deadline in Deseronto" is up today.

In fact, March 12th is actually Day 61... I'm guessing it's better to try disrupt lives on a weekday, when more people are actually working.

-- The demonstrators say they are reclaiming 925 acres illegally taken from the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte starting in 1832.

The land was granted to them by the Crown in exchange for loyalty to the British during the American War of Independence, when the Mohawks were forced from their ancestral home in New York state.

Local Conservative MP Daryl Kramp is not happy about the looming deadline.

“Negotiations are underway and they are ongoing,” he said. “Why the attempt to blockade a legitimate business that’s been there for generations?”

It will be interesting, in light of events at Caledonia, to see whether the OPP will simply stand by and watch another illegal aboriginal blockade go up, or will, as new OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino has previously indicated... step up and enforce the law.

I'm not holding my breath.

-- GRAND-REMOUS, Que. -- A group of armed aboriginals blockaded a Quebec highway Monday, stopping traffic to protest forest management by the province.

Quebec provincial police said between 25 and 50 people set up the blockade around 5:30 a.m. on Highway 117, north of Ottawa.
