Poorest country in the world?
It sure doesn't sound like it...
"That means Canadian taxpayers are shelling out an average of about $244,000 for each diplomat getting new digs in Haiti — and that is just for the land." --Looks like the "gravy train" isn't just a Toronto phenomena.

Some palms being greased here or an artificial transfer to the Haitian government? (real conservative)
Note to the Conservative party: Price will generally go DOWN when demand is down. Can't imagine the demand for land in Haiti is very high, even before the earthquake.
The deal does look suspicious, but would the available rental housing have adequate security? I should think this would be a major concern in Haiti.

it's more than suspicious... it stinks to high heaven.
put a skeleton staff of diplomats in a rental house... and until haiti is halfway safe... concentrate on aid efforts only.

The more interesting problem will happen years from now. The land registry system in Haiti was suspect at best before the earthquake. Now it just doesn't exist. People don't know who owns what and where.
I wouldn't buy any land down there right now.

"chris says... People don't know who owns what and where."
you think haiti... the words prosperity & integrity do not immediately spring to mind.
i'm guessing, chris... considering recent developments... you could very easily get murdered for your pocket change.
where they get these property values is beyond me. somebody's making out like a bandit.
