Whaddaya know... an Islamic nation that...

...doesn't want to turn the clock back to the 7th century...

-- ISTANBUL -- A clear majority of Turks will vote “yes” in a referendum on Sunday on constitutional reforms proposed by the government, pollsters said on Saturday in a boost for Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan says the reforms will bring the constitution, drafted after a 1980 military coup, closer in line with those of the European Union, which Turkey seeks to join.
Cross your fingers.

actually, that's exactly what the reforms are intended to do: move back to the 7th century.

the amendments are meant to strengthen the hand of the current islamist government in its struggle to roll back back ataturkism.

in other words a 'yes' vote is a bad thing.

It's easy for a Muslim State to move their constitution closer to Europe now that most of Europe is a defacto Dhimi state.

Erdogan is an Islamist. He's making sure the military doesn't move the country back toward secularism.

sidenote:

page 19 in the book "blackberry" by rod mcqueen... talks about the repressive turkish regime that allowed islamic pogroms against greeks, jews and armenians who were living and working in that country.

the ray of sunshine is that this type of outrageous behaviour forced mihal (mike) lazaridis & family to flee to germany and then canada... where mike lazaridis developed a little gadget, affectionately known today... as the "crackberry".

turkey's loss is our gain.

let's just hope they are learning how to actually co-exist within the larger field of folk.
