Illegal to use race based statistics?

Unless your thesis is that the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force is actually a racist death squad.
A report commissioned by the African Canadian Legal Clinic that claims a black person is 37 times more likely to be shot and killed by police in Toronto was condemned by the head of the city's police union yesterday.
So what is the stated disparity here?
The report states that one black person per 38,700 was shot and killed by police in Toronto.

For whites, the number was one in 1.4 million people.
The Globe and Mail wants a piece of this.
Black people make up 27 per cent of provincial deaths from police use of force and 34 per cent of fatal police shootings, despite representing just 3.6 per cent of the population.
Let's examine the circumstances under which these people met their maker. Oops, no can do... that information is strangely absent.

Now, I'm no mathematician, but it's possible there may be another explanation here. You could go with the Police Death Squad theory, as per the African Canadian Legal Clinic, or maybe, just maybe... within the black community in Toronto, an individual is statistically 37 times more likely to present a weapon, or attempt to use deadly force on a police officer than his white counterpart.

Shsssssshhhh.

UPDATE: Let's check with Toronto Crimestoppers.

Holy crap... they're part of the racist conspiracy too!

APPARENTLY THE MEDIA'S WORKING THEORY IS THAT...

...THE COPS ARE PICKING OFF SAMMY'S HOMIES... ONE BY ONE...police death squad again
" -- "'He was my baby. I know this will turn out like Sammy Yatim," the mother told VICE, making note that Alex was a good friend of police shooting victim Sammy Yatim, who was killed on a Toronto streetcar back in 2013." --
Listening to the family... and apparently that's where 99% of the current media narrative originates... it seems that Alex Wetlaufer was a model citizen...
-- "Since graduating high school, Alex had focused on working out, had recently completed the army’s required aptitude tests and was 'just waiting for the call', [brother] Michael said, adding that his brother was in peak physical condition.
Well, that certainly sounds impressive... working out for 3 years to realise a career ambition... inspired by your dead father, no less.

I'm pretty sure that most wannabe soldiers just show up and enlist, but what the heck. According to his brother, Alex was a focused, determined tough-minded individual. We're talking Luke Skywalker material here. Still, it's a little hard to fathom why this young man had been sitting around in Toronto's too often squalid Community Housing, waiting years to "get his soldier on."

When you cut to Alex's mother, she, not surprisingly, paints a somewhat different picture...
-- "'Wendy Wettlaufer, Alex’s mother, told CP24 that someone from the family was on the phone with him moments before he was shot. 'He was crying, saying that he’s being surrounded.'" --
Wait a minute... you're on the run from an 'armed to the teeth' SWAT Team... (why run and make yourself a target if you're an innocent bystander?) and then you stop and make a hysterical phone call to your mom... AND THEN she hears you being murdered? That sounds like the plot of a really bad movie.

RELATED:  Ask yet another family member

She wasn't there, she didn't see, but hells bells, let's go with that anyway...
-- "The sister of the 21-year-old man shot and killed by police officers in North York says she believes he was unarmed at the time of the incident." --
She 'believes' he was unarmed? Sweet Baby Jebus. Is this what they teach in J-School, or is it yet another example of CBC's "just phone it in" activism?

Perhaps, instead of career military, Alex Wetlaufer would have been more suited to social work... you know, play to your experience...
The family (Alex was one of ten children) has lived in the Toronto Community Housing neighbourhood for more than 30 years.
Of course, if Justin has his way, our military will all be turned into unarmed social justice advocates anyway.

LAST WORD: If the shoot was a mistake, it was a big one...

Three separate SWAT trained officers apparently felt Alex Wetlaufer was threatening their lives...alex wetlaufer
The civilian agency released new information Wednesday, confirming that three officers discharged their firearms during the incident, though it’s not clear how many times Wettlaufer was shot or which of the officers’ bullets hit him.
Unfortunately, unlike Alex's family, the officers are not permitted to speak about the incident...
The civilian watchdog says it cannot reveal whether Wettlaufer was armed because the investigation is ongoing. The vital piece of information may not be provided until the probe is completed, a process that typically takes several months, or up to a year.
UPDATE:  Here's a crazy thought... let's talk to somebody who isn't related to the deceased...
-- "Sources have told CP24 that the man was armed with a handgun when he was shot. He was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead." --
UPDATE2:  The other side of the story
-- "Toronto police officers from the force’s tactical unit negotiated with Alex Wettlaufer for at least 15 minutes before firing their weapons, killing the young man who a police source says was armed with either a real or replica gun.
And it appears as though he may not have been eligible to enlist in the military after all...
Court documents show Wettlaufer was facing three criminal charges at the time of his death, dating back to an October 2014 incident. Alongside three other accused, Wettlaufer faced one of robbery for allegedly stealing a cellphone and one count of assault causing bodily harm, for allegedly attacking two people.

Wettlaufer alone was charged with the unauthorized possession of a knife that opens through the use of centrifugal force — a weapon that requires a licence.

All of the charges against Wettlaufer were before the court at the time of his death." --
.Wonder how the family feels about being manipulated by the media now?

UPDATE3:  Hammer Time
Loku said to the officers: “What you gonna do, come on, shoot me.”
Sew... reap... case closed.

UPDATE4:  The Usual Dumbsticks

The cancer runs deep

Like most countries in the Middle East, Iraq just doesn't get democracy. --- Despite ousting Saddam, there seems to be this irresistable urge by anyone in any sort of position of authority, to put a jackbooted foot on somebody's, or maybe just anybody's, neck.

Radical surgery on the body-politic seems to be the only solution.
More than 1,000 UK troops have stormed the headquarters of an Iraqi police unit to rescue 127 prisoners, dozens of whom they had feared would be killed.

The British said the unit was suspected of murder and the rescued prisoners appeared to have been tortured.
Incredibly, the Serious Crimes Unit, set up to investigate major incidents against civilians had instead made itself over as a Death Squad.
The operation showed how closely aligned some police units are with militias and death squads — and the challenges coalition forces face as they transfer authority for security to Iraqis.
It's sad to say, but at this point in time Iraqi society is still so insular, savage and unashamedly tribal that Iraqis can't be trusted to police their own streets.

That's why it's so important to stay the course in Iraq. Without radical surgery, this patient is definitely terminal.

Crack CTV reporting...

...reveals not-so-secret police death squad... in Aylmer, Ontario, correction, Quebec...
Robert LeClair told CTV Ottawa that it was his brother David who was shot by police Saturday morning. LeClair said police showed up at his brother's door, allegedly to investigate a complaint filed by David's girlfriend. "He said, 'You're under arrest now.' He took out his pepper spray, sprayed, and then took out his black stick, hitting him with it in the house," said LeClair.

LeClair said the officer then led David outside and told him to lie on the ground. When David refused, the officer took out his gun and threatened to shoot him.

When David still refused, LeClair said the officer shot his brother three times in the side.
Another family member places the shooting back inside the house.
"My brother-in-law was on the floor, shot three times. The cop was still there, he had the gun in his holster but his hand was on it, he didn't want to let it go," said Robert Pombert, the alleged victim's brother-in-law.
Yeah... I bet that's exactly how it happened... both times.

**********

UPDATE: The story just keeps getting better

Apparently, the cop who murdered sonny... also clubbed 73 year-old mom... who was, strangely enough, looking pretty hearty and unbruised during her subsequent tv interviews.
Mrs. Leclair, 73, said police had searched the home in the past -- although she referred to it as "harassment."

At least two officers "USUALLY SHOWED UP AT THE HOUSE" to calm Mr. Leclair down and defuse the situation if necessary, his family said.
Mr. LeClair was, as they say... "known to police."

**********

UPDATE2: It just continues to get better & better

Apparently Officer Mad Max wasn't content to just club Mom...
“He put a gun to her head and said you’re going to get it next. He was screaming at the top of his lungs,” said Robert LeClair.
I guess Mommy Dearest was just too traumatized to mention that herself... in the CTV interview last night.

Good thing the media mentioned David LeClair was a roofer... I was beginning to think this guy was a Buddhist monk.

**********

WELCOME, YET AGAIN, READERS OF CANADIAN CYNIC

So what kind of dumbstick actually falls for an over the top media feeding frenzy like we have here?

Hey, CC... how you doing with those monsters under your bed?

That's what's really hilarious.

BOO!

**********

UPDATE3: The Ottawa Citizen is now reporting...

Mr. LeClair's sister-in-law apparently snapped pictures of him as he lay there dying.

Two questions come to mind.

How many people actually live in this house... and what kind of freak... instead of summoning help, or offering first-aid... takes pictures of a family member who is lying on the ground bleeding to death?

**********

LAST WORD: Family now blaming cops...

...for not having tasers...
David LeClair would be alive today if the Gatineau cop who shot him had a stun gun, the victim's sister-in-law charged yesterday.

The Leftosphere should be happy

At least he didn't get tasered...
A burglar rummaging through a west end pharmacy was shot dead today after he fought with the police officer who stumbled across the break-in.

The shooting happened just before 4 am at Solarski's Pharmacy on Garden and Roncesvalles Aves.
In another account of the shooting... the "Red Star" stops just shy of using the words "Police Death Squad."

**********

UPDATE: Looks like I spoke too soon...

The Globe and Mail IS talking about death squads...
Elmo Harris from Niagara, Canada writes: "More murder and mayhem by our police. Police weapons need to be substantially reduced in power to about 32 calibre. There have been far too many deaths caused by the police lately.

Even more disturbing are the curious circumstances surrounding those deaths. This cop is by himself, he hears an alarm going and a window broken and he doesn't radio it in? Come on!"
See, Elmo... I was thinkin' the headline should have actually been... "Violent junkie burglar killed... neighbours breathe sigh of relief."

I guess that doesn't work for you, huh?

Once again, the Toronto "Red" Star...

...attempts to mythologise a dangerous sociopath...
"Michael Eligon Jr. remains mostly a man of mystery several days after he was fatally shot in a confrontation with police while wearing a hospital gown on an east-end street, blocks from the hospital."
The implication here is that, somehow... this poor guy was taken down by a police death squad... but even the rainbows & unicorns journos at the Star have to include a few facts.
"After leaving the hospital, the 5-foot-11, 160-pound man is believed to have injured someone (the Globe & Mail has a witness saying Eligon stabbed a shopper and injured a police officer) inside a nearby convenience store before trying to hijack a car."

"Shortly after, neighbours on nearby Milverton Blvd. reported that a man in a hospital gown was trying to break into a house at the back door."
I'm not sure what the Star finds so mysterious... we're talkin' straightforward cause & effect here.

If ever there was such a thing as "a good shoot"... this was it...
"Eligon was carrying two pairs of scissors, according to witnesses, and kept walking toward the officers with his hands outstretched despite being ordered to stop as police backed up."
Professional journalists... your moral & intellectual superiors.

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY:
Police have charged two Toronto men in connection with a shooting Thursday afternoon in a west-end neighborhood. The shooting happened after a fight broke out between two people near 75 Tandridge Cres.

Police arrested three men leaving the scene, and seized two loaded firearms. Two of the men face 35 charges, while the third has been released.

Abdullah Abdullahi, 24, and Mohamud Duale, 20, face several charges.

Never a Long Gun Registry around...

...when you really need one...
The hunt is on for two men, one of whom is believed to be armed and dangerous, after a shooting late Tuesday in the city's west end.

A 28-year-old man was walking in the area of Swansea Mews — a townhouse complex on the southwestern edge of High Park — around 10:45 p.m, Toronto Police said Wednesday.

Two men approached him, police said, and one pulled out a gun and opened fire.
No word yet, from Mayor Miller's office... on which gun club the shooter belonged to.

Hang on a sec... Swansea Mews... that sounds so familiar...
"A townhouse complex called Swansea Mews, in other words Toronto Housing."
Oh right... that's the taxpayer-subsidised gun club.

And, hells bells... if they can run Metropolitan Toronto according to EU dictates... what's up with France?

eu rules
The ultimatum from Brussels, in a letter to the French government from the European commission, upped the ante in the ferocious row over France's treatment of immigrant Gypsies, a dispute that hijacked a recent EU summit and saw insults traded over the second world war.

"France is not applying European law as it should," said Viviane Reding, the commissioner for justice and fundamental rights who sparked one of the worst rows in the EU for years this month.
And we'll be seeing the white flags in three... two... one...

RELATED: In other "Police Death Squad" news

The CBC spins yet another sad tale...
The victim was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital but died of his injuries. He was later identified by his friend Antonius Clarke as 26-year-old Eric Osawe. Osawe had spent some time in jail after high school, but was trying to clean up his act.
Geez... from the sounds of things... he wasn't trying all that hard...
Court records show Osawe was convicted of assault in 2004, for which he was given a suspended sentence and one-year probation. Last September, he was convicted of possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property. He spent a short time in jail and again, was given one-year probation.

Another man was seen being led from the building in handcuffs after the shooting. Police later identified the man as Ebony Osawe, 23 — Eric's younger brother. Ebony Osawe has been charged with possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.
I gotta say, if that's "cleaning up your act"... I'd sure hate to see these two when they're out on a tear.

Speaking of a police state

Three Canadian men of Middle Eastern origin who say they were imprisoned and tortured in Syria are demanding an independent inquiry into their allegations.

The three — Muayyed Nurreddin, Abdullah Almaiki and Ahmed El Maati — told a news conference in Ottawa on Thursday that the federal government must follow the recommendations of Justice Dennis O'Connor, who investigated the case of Maher Arar.
This wouldn't suddenly have anything to do with Maher Arar and his multi-million dollar lawsuit would it?
Even though he is now free and back home in Canada, Almaiki said, his family lives in constant fear that he might be re-arrested or kidnapped.
Of course he's afraid... this is Canada, the land of brutal dictatorship, secret police and roaming death squads.

UPDATE: Smell the "investigative" journalism

Toronto Star article seems to imply some sort of Police Death Squad...
“He was a bright young kid,” one-time best friend Anthony Powell remembers, "I know he didn’t deserve this.”
What... as opposed to all the other people who do deserve it?

Staff Reporter Jacob Lorinc seems to have skipped over the fact that D'Andre, (who at 26, was in no way, shape or form "a kid,") was armed with a knife when officers arrived on scene.

I'm a little surprised Mr Lorinc didn't interview D'Andre's kindergarden teacher.

Another one bites the dust

Just like all the recent hysteria over Taser related deaths... it turns out the supposed rising tide of hate crimes in North America... is a myth.
Less than 10,000 total hate crimes of any kind in an entire year, in a country of over 300 million people? Only 7,330 known hate crime offenders?

That means that hate crimes are a drop in the bucket. They are the least of our problems.

The two-thousandths of one percent (.002%) of Americans who committed hate crimes against anyone in 2006, including Protestants (35 complete losers) clearly need help.
While we're playing around with numbers I have one final factoid for the Taser Death Squad Hysterical Society.

There have been 16 taser related deaths in Canada over the last four years.

That works out to 4 instances per year... which, my paranoid friends, is statistically insignificant.

In 2002 alone, twenty-nine Canadians were killed in avalanches.

I'm betting more than 4 Canadians per year, manage to run over and kill themselves with their own cars... and nobody's setting up a public enquiry into that totally predictable and avoidable stupidity.

You're being taken for a ride, folks... which sells a shitload of newspapers and commercial airtime.

Think about it.

**********

UPDATE: The RCMP speaks up
Many comments we have received seem to suggest that the use of a TASER is never justified based on the likelihood of inflicting serious injury or death.

In fact, our experience and that of other police services over the course of many years and thousands of incidents, as well as existing research, have shown that deploying a TASER is often the fastest and safest way to gain control of an individual.

We and other police services teach our officers that it is less likely to cause serious injury than other tactics.

"Live by the sword..."

"...don't be too surprised... somebody skewers your brisket..."
-- TORONTO -- A shooting investigation has turned into a homicide probe after a man shot while waiting at a bus stop in the city's west end died, police announced this afternoon.

Omar Waite, 29, was shot at a TTC bus stop on the southwest corner of Jane St. and Eglinton Ave. W. around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Seems's Toronto's celebrated street thugs are pretty well versed in the concept of "bad karma"...
His shooting came almost exactly 24 hours after the shooting death of Daniel Lewis, 19, who was killed in a laneway near Keele St. and Rogers Rd.

Lewis was a member of the Five Point Generals, while Waite was a member of a rival gang, the Gators, a police officer told the Sun.
