It depends on how you look at it

I mean, is the morgue half full... or, well... overflowing into the nearby alley?

-- Johannesburg SA -- It's a complicated picture, says Johan Burger, senior researcher in the crime and justice programme at South Africa's Institute for Security Studies.

The first thing is that the South African murder rate is going down and not up. "Contrary to what many people think, the murder rate, while still extremely high, is down by about 44% since 1995.
Geez, Johan... it doesn't seem all that, what's the word... "complicated"... to me...
halls of macadamia/Oh yeah...
"In addition to these 18,000 murders each year, there are another 18,000 attempted murders."

I wouldn't trust the statistics either. Governments generally have a vested interest in seeing these go down and the ANC is very firmly entrenched.

That said,in 4 trips there over the past decade. I've not run into any violence apart from hearing night-time gunfire in Johannesburg. But then it's always been that way.

"A collection of bullet-proof clothing by Colombian designer Miguel Caballero has been launched in South Africa."

or was it...

"JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Crime-obsessed South Africans have a powerful new weapon with which to stop likely criminals: the car flamethrower."

i mean... apart from little things like that... it's all good, right?
