Defence lawyer accuses tire-slash victims of doing same to him

TORONTO — The lawyer who defends a father and son accused of slashing tires, smashing windows and terrorizing their west-end neighbours got a taste this week of what his clients' victims went through, when his own tires were slashed outside his Forest Hill apartment.
Gordon Goldman, who represents Felice Scala, 62, and his son Ralph, 36, said he found the damage Monday morning, just before he was due in court to seek bail for the elder Mr. Scala, and a few days after the son was sentenced for putting more than two dozen Junction-area neighbours through hell for more than three years.
Before the sentence was delivered last Friday, a few of these victims – including a long-time schoolteacher, an addiction counsellor and a young mother – read impact statements in court, detailing the effects of tire-slashings and other vandalism carried out at Ralph Scala's bidding, often by young thugs.
Mr. Goldman thinks one of those victims, not the Scalas, wrecked his tires to the tune of $1,000.
“I know in my heart it was one of those people from the hearing,” he said, though he admitted he has no evidence. “I'm positive, but how am I going to prove it?”
Victims were outraged at Mr. Goldman's suggestion.
“Bullshit,” said Ruth Yeoman, 43, who counsels intravenous drug users at a needle exchange program. “I'm sorry for him, but welcome to my world.”
Ms. Yeoman was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and still takes sleep medication years after a dispute with Ralph Scala over their dogs in a park led to repeated damage to their car and verbal taunts in front of their young daughter.
The schoolteacher, Mara Bolotta, whose 87-year-old mother endured broken windows and intimidation at her home adjoining the Scalas' on Quebec Avenue, said she was not surprised to hear of the lawyer's tire troubles, but said “the victims are all family people who have nothing to gain from going after Mr. Goldman” and “too much at stake to get involved in these criminal activities.”
She suggested Mr. Goldman follow the victims' lead and “set up security cameras like the rest of us in order to catch the criminals.”
Police at Toronto's 13 Division, which patrols the lawyer's neighbourhood, had yet to receive a report of the tire slashing today. Mr. Goldman, meanwhile, said he now parks in his building's underground garage.
