It simply shouldn't have happened

Apparently all kinds of people knew this guy was coming unglued... and did nothing about it...

"He was kind of a lost soul. It was as if he was always looking for something," a member of a Winnipeg family which befriended Li -- even having him over for Christmas dinner two years ago -- told the Free Press Saturday in an exclusive interview.

"I think, in their culture, (the issue of mental illness) is kind of frowned upon," the woman said. She works in the mental health field and said it was obvious Li was struggling.
No lady... he wasn't struggling... he was on his way to a homicidal meltdown and you stood by and watched.
"He was definitely schizophrenic, probably paranoid schizophrenic," she said. "He needed help but he just wouldn't get it."
Sure... let's put the onus for seeking treatment on the guy who's obviously crazier than a shithouse mouse... that sounds like a plan.
"There was the constant paranoia, a feeling that he was always being watched and that others might be out to get him. There were his bizarre, rambling stories that seemed to come out of nowhere."
And yet, all of these "concerned folks", simply stood by and did nothing.
The woman predicts Li will finally now get the help he needs.
Yeah... that's just peachy.

Tell that to the family and friends of Tim McLean.

WELCOME, YET AGAIN, READERS OF CANADIAN CYNIC

Another two links in one post, CC? Something's really bothering you, huh?

CC loudly proclaims, "...the mentally unhinged that walk among you..."

Well, that's certainly something he's familiar with...

C'mon, CC... be a good boy and just take your meds.

LAST WORD: Hey, CC... one woman has had enough

Truth be known, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get help for the mentally ill if the ill will not seek help. Try to get help for a person you think is "a bit off" and you will soon discover that unless the person is imminent danger either to self or others there is literally nothing that can be done.

"joe says... unless the person is imminent danger either to self or others"

lemme see... the article clearly states someone in the mental health field observed ol' vince in the throes of a psychotic break.

sounds open and shut to me.

but by all means, let's try to get more effective legislation in place... and watch the liberals go even more apeshit about the evil conservative agenda. there's a win/win situation.

and tim mclean? why, he's just collateral damage from our screwy "no such thing as a bad boy" social policies.

who cares about him?

*

Joe said...

Actually there is rarely an open and shut case when it comes to "psychotic episodes".

I have witnessed several people in like distress and was unable to effect remedy through our present medical/psychological establishment. I thought they needed help but they declined the help and the medical and legal officials told me that unless there was an immanent danger to self or others nothing could be done. Until "Vince" picked up the knife and threatened Tim the "authorities" are legally bound not to intervene.

The only times I have been able to help was once when a fellow pulled a knife and was about to threaten someone else and another time when one person almost poisoned themselves because of their mental state. Other times people, clearly delusional, were allowed to live their lives as they saw fit because they refused to see a doctor.

I don't like not being able to help someone in need of medical attention but imagine the world we would have if because I thought you to be a "little off" you were held against your will and force fed all kinds of mind altering medication.

Mental health is one issue that our society does not have a good handle on but then again I can't think of a society that does have a better way of handling issues of the mind.

Neo Conservative said...

"joe says... imagine the world we would have if because I thought you to be a "little off" you were held against your will "

sorry joe... this was clearly more than a case of someone being "a little off." as was the case of taseree robert dziekanski. there are people walking around unmedicated... who are clearly a danger to others.

you don't deal with this... you get horror and tragedy... like this beheading and the recent random knife attacks in toronto.

i have a buddy who is a medic in the gta who has had people committed under the mental health act because they were dangerous... either to themselves, or others.

let's trust our frontline workers... like e.r. docs & nurses and cops and paramedics... and give them more initial discretionary power here. build in whatever individual safeguards you need after the initial committal.

the status-quo is unacceptable. just ask tim mclean's family.

*

Honey Pot said...

Joe is right, you try and get someone committed without their consent. Until they do something to hurt others or themselves, you can't.

Many families are ashamed if someone in the family has a mental illness, and will do anything to justify it, cover it up, even ignore it.

Not all people who suffer mental illness are a danger to others, but there is enough to justify getting this out in the open and dealt with.

You can thank the left-libs for shutting down the mental health care institues and having people with serious mental illness wandering the streets, eating in soup kitchens, and sleeping on our streets.

Apparently you have a right to be mentally ill, refuse medication, and live like a dog on the streets, according to the left-libs.

so let's get some checks and balances... make a family member, or one of the myriad social workers responsible for more than writing reports.

make that person responsible for their client... like a surety.

their client refuses to show up every day and take their meds... it triggers a hearing to determine if they're currently a danger to themselves or others.

and please don't tell me to base it on trust... your brain's wired wrong... this is part of the price you have to pay for wandering around in society.

Set aside for the moment the question of throwing the presumptive mentally ill into hospital without their consent.

Mental health care in Canada is badly underfunded, and a lot of it is not covered by Health Canada. There is a longtime shortage of psychologists and other psych professionals. Waiting lists, even in the good old efficient private sector, are months and years long, and standard costs are at or above $120 per hour.

Since the seriously mentally ill are handicapped in advocating for themselves, and typically poor, what leverage do they have in a system which requires persistence, acumen and piles of money to access?

It took seven years for a friend to get her schizophrenic mother into a care home. During that seven years, the mother (poor and unemployed) ran up thousands of dollars on credit cards, set fire to her apartment twice by forgetting something on the stove, and wandered the streets at all hours collecting filthy, decaying things from the garbage and carrying them home. Until she could be committed her family was in constant fear of what might happen.

There is one institution in Canada which will take severely mentally ill people in with a minimum of delay and without their consent. It's called the prison system, and it has a lot of them, something over 11% of male inmates are mentally ill, and that was in 2005. http://www.oci-bec.gc.ca/reports/AR200405_e.asp#3a

The unnamed psych professional in the story could have done nothing for Li, and it has nothing to do with commitment procedures.

Weren't Mike Harris and Tony Clement Conservatives? They closed down the Brockville Psychiatric hospital.

Joshua Lall in Calgary, also likely beset with schizophrenia, killed his whole family and their boarder. Afterwards people who knew him said that his behaviour had changed. Who do you want to blame for that equally horrifying massacre?

There needs to be efficient, humane and less shameful ways for ensuring that individuals who require mental health care get it.

noni... i'm curious... was this woman not taking her medication, or did the meds just not work? more to the point... in either scenario above... what is the solution?

i also sense you're not one of my regular readers... i imagine you came here by way of one of the two links thoughtfully provided by canadian cynic.

just wondering... you sound like a kindly, concerned human being... how you feel about cc describing female blogger sandy crux as "fellatiotastic"... or his prevailing sentiment about the "dumb cuntitude" of the blogging tories in general?

a little off topic, i know... but i'm just trying to get some insight into the puzzling and contradictory aspects of the progressive mindset while you're here.

i've tried asking cc himself... but as you might have noticed... he's a little sensitive about anything to do with myself or the blog.

I blame it all on the Charter, giving one the right to be stupid, dangerous, refuse medication or help and the lawyers who defend those suffering from any of the above. If you have EMS friends or families, ask them if a friend or family can make decisions for the victim of an accident etc. NO.
Then there is the problem of being sued for being a good samaritan.

"maryt says... the problem of being sued for being a good samaritan"

in the 80's, the ttc offered cpr courses to their vehicle operators... but at the end of the course they also advised them about the "liability issues" involved.

the shorter version was... you do this and somebody sues... we're (pun intended)... gonna toss you under the bus.

in other words...just wait for the freakin' paramedics, hoss.

but, hey... it sure looked good on paper.

*

Noni Mausa said...

Neo changed the subject by flattering me and then saying: ...just wondering... you sound like a kindly, concerned human being... how you feel about cc describing female blogger sandy crux...

I am a kindly, concerned human being, or at least I try. That's why I judge people by their accomplishments and intentions, not their syntax or surface civility.

Yes, CC likes adding crudities to his salad. Oh well. But I read the Cynic because of their relentless exposure of the flaws, ranging from foolishness to malice, from secrecy to neglect, of the powerful towards the powerless.

I would probably be a conservative, or at least approve of them, if Canada had any.

Certainly, administrations in power all screw up, lie, cheat, and tilt the deck to their favor. That's humans for you. But with items like the "Tory handbook on obstructing and manipulating Commons committees." http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20070518/tories_parliament_070518/20070518 , I don't think I need to cut Harper much slack just yet.

And once power shifts to the other side of the aisle, I am sure CC and his kin will be right in there with the chopped onions, parmesan and croutons.

Finally, you did ask a question: was my friend's mother taking her meds? How exactly would you ensure that a delusional woman off playing with the pixies is going to check her watch and take a pill, three times a day, every day. When they need it most is when they take it least, and without supervised care, (hello? Canadian health care system?) how would that work?

Noni

Neo Conservative said...

*
"noni explains... CC likes adding crudities to his salad. Oh well."

well, noni... that's not exactly an answer.

his whole shtick is shitting all over people... most notably women... in the guise of, what... social justice?

and your reaction is simply, "oh well"?

perhaps you're less kindly and concerned than i thought.

how exactly would you react, if your spouse, or partner... were to constantly refer to you as a dumb cunt? no biggie, right?

and, not to split hairs here... but it's largely "syntax and surface civility" that allow us to coexist with a china, or a syria... or an unpleasant neighbour... instead of fixing bayonets and charging their trenches.

i submit that a truly kindly, concerned citizen would be chastising, rather than kissing up to... such as the cynic.

it just seems, you know... no matter how you toss your, uh... salad... to be a tad hypocritical.

and, of course, you realise... the second you don't agree with him... you join the rest of the "dumb cuntitude".

as for the question of the mentally ill... i do agree, there's no easy answers here... but if you have to lock people up to stop, say... decapitations or self-harm... then that's what you do.

sometimes, while you're searching for the ideal solution, you do what you can.

or innocent people die.

I will draw your attention to your original post, since we seem to have gotten off track. You said:

Then, in the comments, informed people demonstrate to you that, no, actually there was nothing this lady* could have done to stop the meltdown, and that in fact Health Canada is not pulling their weight regarding mental health, and by their inaction dumping a lot of ill people into prisons instead.

Whereupon you attack another blog.

Neo a piece of advice, don't talk or have dialog with trash kick it to the curb. Of course leftards are okay with calling females derogatory names. Degrading females is a past time for leftarded males in discussion forums and blogs.

I don't blame anyone for the murder, I most certainly don't blame the victim. Canada has a dismal record of aiding the mentally ill and I blame the liberals and their over sensitive feelings based hyped up ideology. The Mental Health System was working very well until the left destroyed it and replaced an entire system with "Disability Cheques". They threw a cheque at the mentally ill and beamed proudly for the media simpering look how tolerant we are.

We need to stop looking towards the government to solve the Mental Health Crisis, and yes we have one. Throwing a mentally ill person a disablity cheque for the past twenty years has been a dismal failure. In my community we gave up waiting for the Feds to do anything meaningful. To make a long story short: A charity was started up, they bought three ole Victorian Mansions and converted them into Small Options homes for the mentally ill, those suffering from retardation and people who suffer from a brain injury. The residents pay a monthly rent and are provided with round the clock volunteer supervision. They cook and clean for themselves as a group. Two years ago the residents were asked to assist a local furniture maker and there work and craftmanship was so successful these residents now work and make additional income from their craft as woodworkers. Fast forward to this year and they've opened a cafe including a new used furniture store where they desplay their wares for sale. The resident learn interaction skills by working a few hours a week in the cafe and love interacting with the public. The entire program is funded now by the residents, the volunteers have empowered those in need, mostly men, instead of coddling them with a simpering condescending voice this organization empowered them to enrich their own lives by giving them the tools to exist in society. This program should be used as the model of what can be accomplished without government interferance.

Supervision (meds etc) and a positive routine would go along way to aiding the mentally ill.

Amusement mostly, I'm curious to see how long you can go without ever addressing anything anyone says to you. (i'm leaving aside the dittohead knob shiners... clearly you address them)

Actually neo, it is oddly amusing how you blog on a subject, all full of piss and vinegar, then the moment your opinion is questioned you turn into a troll on your own blog. Inevitably, you avoid answering questions you don't like by insulting the questioner, changing the topic or blaming cc. You're just a scared, angry man.

you must be in a down phase tonight... 'cos that's a little different than your last theory...

How appropriate you call your blog "halls of macadamia"...'cause you're fucking NUTS!

Oh, and the blaming cc bit is funny.

Way to take personal responsibility for what's going on your blog "OMG IT'S A NASTY LIBERAL WHO MADE ME DO IT!!"

cameron exclaims... s is right, that's what I was trying to put my finger on"

see, cameron... i knew you guys would get along.

now all you have to do is keep coming back... and endlessly pitch your (well, your buddy's) whiny theory, just like on that other thread.

because robotlike repetition of a newly discovered, hastily thrown-together thesis trumps facts any day.

i know, i know... i'm waiting.

OK, you're a scared, angry man...who is fucking NUTS! (Sorry for leaving that part out.) Boy, that "nuts" comment must have really gotten to you...you've repeated it several times now.

Back to the topic purportedly addressed by this blog: your pointing fingers at those who knew Vince Li.

Since you seem to be unfamiliar with the notion of compassion, neo, you may not grasp the meaning of the words that the pastor of the Grant Memorial Baptist Church expressed in this CTV news item.
