Fixed Date Elections Bill (C-16)

- Third Reading - 6 November 2006 -

Notes for an Address by the Honourable Robert Nicholson Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform

Excerpt:

* Mr. Speaker, some Opposition members had concerns that this bill is illusory in that the Prime Minister can call an election at any point up until the fixed date for the election.

* However, Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has to retain his prerogative to advise dissolution to allow for situations when the government loses the confidence of the House.

* This is a fundamental principle of our system of responsible government.

* Moreover, if the bill were to indicate that the Prime Minister could only advise dissolution in the event of a loss of confidence, it would have to define ‘confidence’ and the dissolution of the House of Commons would be justiciable in the courts – something that we certainly do not want.

FROM THE COMMENTS:
"Aw come on, everyone knows the Prime Minister is breaking the law. The Liberal Party says so, and they would never, ever mislead people - remember when they warned us that Harper was going to put soldiers in our cities with guns, they were right about that, right?"

This link should be sent to every paper that is trumpeting Don's line about breaking the law --- once again - Liberals lie and the media let them get away with it --- c'est la vie.

i had such high hopes for natnews when it first started... but since it turned into cbc lite, i can't even stand to go there.

people apparently want to be entertained, rather than informed.

sad.

If the law is simply an "aspirational" goal, then it is not technically being broken, should Harper break it.

But if the government did not fall on a confidence motion, and the aspirational goal is to have the election next year, Harper's visit to the GG can only be seen as his resignation.

No one gave a damn an hour after it was said about the fixed election date.

Harper is something to behold.

He knows the left has no money, and the left vote will be split between the useless, the uselesser, and the noveau tree hugging, leaf eating puritans.

This is going to be good!

No.

The left was enjoying living normal lives. Believe it or not, most people want to live their life and enjoy it, and not be having to constantly watch the government. With this government, every time you turn around, they want to take away rights, impose their nanny state on us more, while dismantling the fabric of our state.

After two years of the Harper regime, we've had enough. We're taking time out of our otherwise happy lives to rid Canada of the far right Harper cancer.

"anon carps... After two years of the Harper regime, we've had enough."

you're joking, right?

everything i read... says steffi wants to put the election off until october 2013.

and please help us out with all the nanny-state legislation and 'dismantled societal fabric?'... the harper government is responsible for.

finally, if your lives have been so happy these last couple of years... what exactly are you looking to change?

I haven't heard anything about 2013.

The thinly disguised anti-abortion law is true "nanny state" legislation. Not the nanny who helps out and provides standards and regulations to make life safer, the nanny who tells you what to do and wants to control your life.

"dismantled societal fabric" is not the same as dismantling the fabric of the state. Which institutions are not under attack? Supreme Court? Senate? Elections Canada? Parliament?

finally, if your lives have been so happy these last couple of years... what exactly are you looking to change?
Lives were happy and relatively carefree before the last couple of years. Now vigilance is required.

1)- Steffi and the gaggle of muck rakers who think that crap slinging is the same as fuctioning as an opposition.

and 2)- minority........ to a majority

That'll do for a start.

why didn't the opposition just get together and stop this vile legislation from becoming law?
