So, who did “send” Obama?

The key I think is his ties not to well connected uber lawyer Newton Minow, as Kaufman suggests, but more likely to the family of (in)famous former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers – not just Bill Ayers, but also Bill’s father Tom Ayers and his brother John as well.

Over in Russia...

They're already using the Sockpuppet Solution...
As Clifford Levy wrote in The Times last week, Russia’s national networks, the most powerful media in the country, are routinely deleting news or opinions critical of the Kremlin.
I'm guessing Elmo and the Socks would be just fine with this, admittedly less than elegant, solution.
In one notable case, Mikhail Delyagin, a well-known political analyst, criticized Vladimir Putin during the taping of a talk show. When the program aired, Mr. Delyagin was missing. Or, most of him was missing.

His disembodied legs remained in the picture.
The most intriguing part of this, is how the Russians themselves are reacting...
A troubling aspect of this slide toward those dark old days is that many Russians insist they are fine with government-controlled TV. In the Web commentary after Mr. Levy’s article appeared online, quite a few Russians said a free press is unnecessary.

One called the idea “American propaganda.”
But of course... that evil George Bush... again.

Now anybody who actually follows the blog regularly, knows I'm a very ex-Roman Catholic.

I guess I think of myself as a non-religious social conservative. But I figured it was time to actually just use the word "atheist."

Now, I don't look down on people with religious beliefs... in truth, I suppose on some level, everybody really wants to be a believer. Life everlasting... who couldn't get with that? And those commandments... no killing, no stealing... hands off the other guy's wife... those are pretty good rules.

-- BOSTON -- The openly gay U.S. Episcopal bishop at the center of the Anglican church's global battle over homosexuality, has entered into a civil union with his longtime partner at a private ceremony.

The 77 million-member Anglican Communion, a global federation of national churches, has been in upheaval since 2003 when the Episcopal Church consecrated Robinson as the first bishop known to be in an openly homosexual relationship in more than four centuries of church history.
Well... that oughta liven up the agenda...

It’s the stories we (used to) tell.

Many conservatives often seem to have given up on culture or not to care. There’s a strong strain of philistinism on the right.

When we talk about “culture wars,” we usually mean preventing the courts from redefining marriage or promoting abstinence instead of birth control: culture, in other words, as the behavioral branch of politics.

Culture, in the true sense, is more than that. It’s the whole engulfing narrative of our values.

Leftists know this. These kids get an earful from the Left every day. Their schools serve up black history in a way guaranteed to alienate them from the American enterprise.

Their sanctioned reading list denies boys the natural fantasies of battling villains and protecting women from harm. Any instinct the girls might have that their bodies and their self-respect are interrelated is negated by the ubiquitous parable of celebrity lives.

Any violent, lawless gangbangers, out here in Hastings Cty... what's up with that?
-- TORONTO -- Four people linked to a street gang considered one of the most savage in the world were allegedly plotting to kill a law enforcement official before being foiled by police.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said the alleged target was a person within Toronto's criminal justice system but refused to give further details out of concerns for the target's safety.
So... targetted killings against law-enforcement and judicial officials? Sounds a lot like what's happening in Mexico right at the moment.
Police say the transnational gang, which has roots in Latin America and 50,000 members worldwide, has been trying for years to set up cells in Canada.

The probe by the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force is the first to uncover an organized and hierarchical MS-13 cell in Canada. U.S. magazine Newsweek recently called MS-13 "the most dangerous gang in North America."
And it looks like Toronto's regular bangers are gonna have to step it up a notch.
Asked to compare MS-13's use of violence to that of gangs like the Crips and the Bloods, Blair said it is "quite frankly over the top.

"That (violence and intimidation) is a characteristic they have clearly brought into our community," he said.

I'm guessing Lloyd will be showcasing the "breasts in question" on tonight's CTV National News.

And it didn't even make any sort of sense. If Mommy-Dearest was truly worried about her baby's diet, she should have pumped extra breast milk before she left... so Junior's meals wouldn't have been disrupted in her absence. It's more than just...

Bubble-wrapping the baby... over the course of a single generation we have turned a long-accepted family dynamic totally upside down...
In America we are currently living in a Kindergarchy, under rule by children. People who are raising, or have recently raised, or have even been around children a fair amount in recent years will, I think, immediately sense what I have in mind.

Children have gone from background to foreground figures in domestic life, with more and more attention centered on them, their upbringing, their small accomplishments, their right relationship with parents and grandparents.
It's a concept that people, these days, mostly make jokes about... which makes this hard-headed, no-nonsense article all the more interesting.
I don't for a moment mean to suggest that such an upbringing produced a superior generation of adults. What it produced was another group of people who later spent their lives going about the world's business, with no strong grudges against their parents or anger at such abstract enemies as The System.

All I would claim is that to be free from so much parental supervision seemed a nice way to grow up, and it surely resulted in a lot less wear and tear on everyone all round.

-- KANADAHAR, Afghanistan -- "A Canadian soldier on foot patrol in Kandahar's volatile Panjwai district was shot and killed on Tuesday morning, marking the second combat death for Canadian Forces in the last month."

"It's the 10th death so far this year."
Or, was it...
-- TORONTO, Canada -- "A Jamaican-Canadian man in Toronto's volatile Scarborough district was shot and killed in his livingroom on Friday, marking the third shooting death for Afro-Canadian males in the last week."

"It's Toronto's 22nd murder so far this year."
Funny how that works, huh?

FROM THE COMMENTS:
"Will the PM issue a travel warning against going to Toronto, as it is dangerous and you might get killed."
So, just to recap... and please note, rabid Hogtown-lickers, that I'm actually rounding down here... as many Torontonians get murdered annually... as the total number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan in the last six years.

So, I ask you, which is the more horrible war here?

Hillary-Kiri

She can only blame herself.
The exercise, which was billed as a free-flowing exchange between the candidate and voters in different Super Tuesday states, brought out the most stage-managed aspects of her campaign in an event that was billed as spontaneous.

Answering a single pre-screened question from each of the 22 states that were to hold primary elections three days later, Mrs Clinton handled a mix of flattering and softball inquiries.

Each questioner was introduced by a celebrity. “Oh there’s Chelsea,” said Mrs Clinton with apparent surprise when her daughter popped up on the screen in Connecticut. “Hi Mom,” said Chelsea. “I love you so much.”

The ensuing question was only slightly less saccharine.
That getting caught lying her ass off... was just the icing on the cake.

And, of course, every once in a while... the mask would slip.

Yeah, you moron, we know...

He must've "disrespected you."
Last night, police arrested Tyrell Nathan Brown, 20 of Toronto, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Nonetheless, it seems Toronto Mayor "Super Dave" Miller is convinced we should go with the O.J. Defense... you know, forget about "small fry" like ol' Tyrell... let's go after "the real killers."
"Closing us down would do absolutely nothing to solve the crime problem," said Peter Krause, vice-president of the Scarborough Rifle Club.

"We shoot target rifles, single-shot target rifles. There's no handguns in that club whatsoever."
But that won't stop Super Dave... will it?

Just back from Toronto

Missed dropping in on Lee Valley Tools... (in my opinion, one of the city's few redeeming features) but I'll catch up next week when I return to wire up the father-in-law's new ceramic-top stove.

Getting rid of "Electrosaurus" is a huge victory for Mrs. Neo and myself. The elements were in various states of decay... and I'm sure lights dimmed all over North York every time her Dad turned it on. He was up here with us celebrating his 85th birthday... and we mounted a relentless (octagenarians and two year-old's being some of the least flexible people on the planet) campaign to force the big switch.

Mrs. N's father got the old behemoth from his own father as a wedding present some 54 years ago... so, of course, it's hardwired and weighs almost as much as a Volkswagen. Gotta conjure up some faded memories of highschool electrical shop... 'cos these babies pull the Big Juice... as opposed to that pissant "yip, flinch & spin" 110v.

Anyway... it's been a long day... but one thing I absolutely have to do is catch up the Sockpuppet Sleighride.

-- TORONTO -- General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM) is shutting four North American plants making pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, including its pickup line in Oshawa, Ont., eliminating about 1,000 Canadian jobs.

Added to the assembly plant closures, GM "will consolidate the related stamping and powertrain capacity," with announcements to be made later on which plants will be hit.

Superior Justice Gerald Taylor says the protests are doing "irreparable harm" to the city.
Hmmm... apparently the McSlippery Spykids have other pressing priorities...

RECAPPING BCHRC V. STEYN

The absolute, bar none, highlight of DAY 1 -- Try to imagine a world... populated entirely by self-involved, over-agitated toddlers...
-- 3:50 PM -- "Back from a break, as the tribunal members wrestle with yet another ruling on admissibility in the absence of rules of evidence.

They’ve decided again to sort-of admit questioning about the “impact,” not of Steyn’s article, but of various, mostly obscure blogs who were allegedly “inspired” by Steyn’s piece."

"Understand: we’re now to be subjected to the state’s inquisition, not for anything that appeared in the magazine, but for whatever lunatic ramblings might appear anywhere in the blogosphere!"
I'm right there with ya, Khurrum...
Please don't go, no, no, no, no, no...
It hurts so bad
It makes me feel, it makes me feel so bad
Don't make me hurt so bad
I'm begging you, please

UPDATE:
See... that's the problem right there...

You keep expecting it to make sense.
"My biggest beef was as a BC TAXPAYER having to watch a trial conducted by three smirking losers about four Ontario students who were offended by what they read in a magazine published in Ontario with the primary lawyers being from Ontario."

"And then Khurrum Awan mentions Ontario's Five Feet of Fury and TVO as the blogs which caused his sensitive feelings to be hurt."

“We already have a lot of safe consumption sites in the city of Toronto,” Councillor Gord Perks pointed out. “They're called bars.”

True enough. But last time I checked, alcohol was legal. Most people don't have to steal or sell sex to get it. In general, it enhances lives. Nor is it supplied by gangster cartels.

Perhaps Mr. Perks really does think a hit of crack is no worse than a nice glass of pinot, in which case I'd love to know what kinds of chats he has with his teenage kids.

A gift, huh?

I'm havin' a little trouble understanding how Steffi imagines he can characterise his latest headlong retreat as some sort of victory.
-- OTTAWA -- Despite a chorus of bad publicity over the Maxime Bernier affair, the Conservative government waltzed through a series of confidence votes Monday.

The Liberals were taunted and laughed at by their opponents as only a handful of their members showed up for a set of 114-83 votes that took the legislation one step closer to becoming law.
But, brace yourself so you don't fall outta your chair...
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion noted that the political gift of Bernier's resignation would never have happened if, several weeks ago, he'd brought down the government as some in his party urged him to do.
Gotta tell ya, Stef... there's a gift here... but it sure ain't the one you're thinking of.

"El-Misery cracks me up. I cannot believe he hired a Christian professor to demonstrate 'that Steyn has misunderstood the relationship between the Koran and Islamic society'."

"Why didn’t he call on his good pal Imam Ali Hindy (of polygamy fame) to make the case?"

"After all it is at Ali Hindy’s mosque that Elmasry gives his painful sermons."
*

It makes as much sense...

As the rest of the murders... in the, uh... "community."
A family member who asked not to be named said after Dawnette left, Dockery got up, went upstairs and found one of his stepdaughters with a young man.

"O'Neil was talking to them, telling them to leave, so they left and they came back and O'Neil probably told them to go."

Then went the bullet into Dockery's forehead, "execution-style."
Of course, that doesn't mean anybody's handing over the shooter.

Culture-driven omerta... yet again.

*

Save us, oh wonderful CBC...

A pox upon, er... within your house.
In Canada, 2002-06 figures compiled by the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP) from 15 hospitals across the country show about 1,500 children were hurt in bunk-bed mishaps during that period.
And it's actually worse than you're thinking... says the safety-conscious CEEB.
The actual figure is likely higher, however, since most of the 15 reporting centres are pediatric hospitals, so injuries suffered by older teens and young adults aren't captured in the data.

Not surprisingly, the majority of those injuries were linked to the top bunk and a big proportion were ladder-related.
Good grief... time for a public enquiry.

You start with that 'rule of law' stuff...

And we'll kill you.
"If an injunction is issued in Brantford in these circumstances, I have grave doubts that the peace will hold."
Geez... that doesn't sound so good. What's that word... you know, dammit... tip-o-my tongue... the opposite of peace?
"Moreover, I think it is important for the court to understand that organized groups, institutions and leaders with aboriginal nations will not have the authority to control the actions of the individual members of their communities."
Out of control, huh? You mean, like crazy?
"An injunction employed to restrain the exercise and assertion of aboriginal rights not only threatens the public peace and safety but fundamentally undermines the rule of law."
Hang on a sec there fella... lemme see if I've got this right.

No public peace... no public safety... no rule of law?

You mean you're gonna turn Ontario into one giant native reservation?

Okay... now I'm scared.

The wedding night party was still under way at the family’s home in Roubaix when the groom came down from the bedroom complaining that his bride was not a virgin. He could not display the blood-stained sheet that is traditionally exhibited as proof of the bride’s “purity.”

The husband went to court the following morning and was granted an annulment on the grounds that his bride had deceived him on “one of the essential elements” of the marriage.
Wow, where was this... Sudan... Saudi Arabia?
