I'm sitting here utterly gobsmacked...

...as Canada continues its slow slide into utter madness...

A multiple killer has been awarded $6,000 in damages because prison officials in Ontario failed to comply with his request for specialty running shoes, in a case that could make it easier for inmates and others to sue government agencies.

The Federal Court of Canada ruled that Correctional Services of Canada engaged in "misfeasance in public office" by repeatedly stalling Gregory McMaster when he asked for his $125 pair of New Balance running shoes.

Four people were killed by McMaster during a six-day spree in the summer of 1978. His victims included a police officer in Minnesota and three other victims in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
I got nuthin'.

Okay... it took me a while to absorb this one, but I think I've got it...
"my personal feeling here is we should buy them all top-quality construction boots and gloves and re-implement that daily exercise regimen of turning big rocks into tiny ones."

"see... we're always gonna need gravel... tired, introspective convicts are just ice-cream."

"win-win."

Well they should have just bought his shoes in the first place instead of playing silly buggers with the paper work. It would have been cheaper and not opened the way for future court cases. By the way, messing up and delaying inmates paperwork is routinely and deliberatley done.

you know, the way i figure it... if nobody in my family gets $125.00 shoes... call me wacky... why should i buy a pair for a mass murderer?

Hey, anonymous. Shouldn't you be back in your "house" at this time of night?

Gawd, when i was in the army back in the 80's, the PT kit issued included a single pair of ultra cheap canvass runners shoes worth no more than 4 bucks at best. Apparently they came in only one size as well: 11!

We all thought it hilarious that the government issued the same kit to inmates, but in more sizes.

Not so funny now though.

The lawyer says, "we as taxpayers are not properly served by our administrators". Is this nasty killer actually paying taxes from the slammer? I don't think so. The bureaucracy owes him nothing except bare feet; he isn't in a health spa. I advocate contracting Prisons Canada out to the Turkish prison authorities - there is no recidivism there.

Well they should have bought him size 13 triple E shoes, but the cheapest they could find of course. WTF did they have to wait for so long? Still he doesn't deserve 6 grand.

What is interesting to note is that he got such a long sentence from the US court, and got manslaughter convictions here. Go figure.

The only shoes these bastards should be wearing are cement.

This is what happens when you have liberals on the bench. We need to change that...

It is the insanity of the left that allows these creeps so called rights trump that of their victims.

This is crazy. I hope Harper's tough on crime agenda comes soon.

Also some rights for victims.

$125 for speciality shoes isn't that much. The prison officials should not have been dicking the guy around and just ordered the shoes. By the time they ordered three pairs that didn't fit they could have bought the other ones in the first place. Looks like they got screwed in the end. $6000 for shoes are pretty pricey. I guess that's what power tripping gets you. Hope it was worth it. All this does is open the door for more complaints. Penny wise, pound foolish. Not very fiscally conservative if you ask me. What a waste of money.

Couple of dunks in Grip-Dip and problem solved.
The cement was the best idea though.

"anon bleats... $125 for speciality shoes isn't that much"

"yeah", says convict-suckin' anon, "i'm with the serial killer."

sorry, nonny... looks like you'll have to take this beef to your social worker/parole officer.

'cos the majority of us say... take away their designer shoes, their computers, the cigarettes and the weight pile... prison ain't supposed to a pleasant experience.

this guy shoulda been swinging at the end of a rope decades ago.

Listen neo-con,

just b/c i don't they should have dicked him around with the shoes does not mean that i don't think he should serve his time or he shouldn't be punished for his crimes. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

insults and asuumptions are rather petty.

prisons should also rehabilitate and they do a piss poor job at that. Getting tired of repeat offenders? Get out there and lend a hand. Those don't re-offend usually have alot of help and support till they get back on their feet and have postive mentors in their lives. trying to help ex-offenders stay on the straight and narrow is not the same as condoning their behaviour.

I also have no problem with the death penalty.

"anon says... Get out there and lend a hand."

please... elucidate... perhaps we can all learn something from your example.

It's called volunteering. How about being a mentor to kids at risk or helping in any of the agencies that deal with ex-offenders. Or you could just sit at home and bitch. Hey it's your tax money. I thought conservatives were supposed to be more civic minded than moonbat liberals and volunteered more and believed in helping people become self sufficient. Very easy to be an armchair critic but quite another thing to get in there and do the dirty work. I guess that's what you pay taxes for...for the government to relieve you of your civic duties. Hey that's waht liberals do isn't it?

no, my fuzzy-bunny friend... i meant 'tell us about what YOU do'... so we can learn from your shining example.

see... my personal feeling here is we should buy them all top-quality construction boots and gloves and re-implement that daily exercise regimen of turning big rocks into tiny ones.

see... we're always gonna need gravel... tired, introspective convicts are just ice-cream.

win-win.

Considering I'm a SAHM that educates her kids at home, there is only so much I can do at this point in my life. All I can do is impress upon my children why it is important to get involved when they see a need and why as a Christian they need to help. Love the sinner and hate the sin. When the kids are older my husband and I and the children will be volunteering at an inner city church. My parents work with ex-offenders. The see first hand the positive results with ex-offenders when community gets involved. They also realize that some people are far to damaged to be helped and yes some don't want help. I have no problem with putting inmates to work. There needs to be balance. With every mile of road there is two miles of ditch. You can get off in the punishiment ditch or off in the "it's not their fault" ditch. In the end it doesn't really matter what I do. Either you feel it's your duty to help if and when you can or you don't. Maybe you should take a tour of a prison some time just to find out how comfy they really have it. My mom didn't find it all that inviting.

let's pull that apart, huh... 'cos you've apparently got enough time to cruise the internet and give sanctimonious little homilies in defense of serial killers.

hey... you could always write letters to these 'poor guys'. make sure you include some "naughty pictures" though... i think that's the part they like best.

or... call me wacky... you could use your time to support something like "victims rights".

but that's not even on the radar, huh? funny how that works.

hey... hang on a sec... do your kids have $125.00 shoes?

just curious.

I'm not defending his actions. You obviously missed that point. I'm crticizing the way in which the prison officials bungled his paper work, which in the end cost them more and will cause more hassle than what's it worth. Not very fiscally responsible.

"hey... you could always write letters to these 'poor guys'. make sure you include some "naughty pictures" though... i think that's the part they like best."

This has nothing to do with the arguement at hand. You must have run out of valid points to say. And to say something like that shows me the lack of integrity and character you must have. You can make you point with belitting a complete stranger.

"or... call me wacky... you could use your time to support something like "victims rights"."

I do.

"but that's not even on the radar, huh? funny how that works."

You shouldn't assume.

"hey... hang on a sec... do your kids have $125.00 shoes?"

My oldest does yes. Specialty shoes for his collasped arches and to accomodate his wide feet.

"anon says... I'm crticizing the way in which the prison officials bungled his paper work"

and i'm criticising you... for supporting the "socialist mindthink" that says we have to warehouse 'a serial killer' for decades at taxpayer expense... never mind provide him with special designer shoes.

and i'll tell you, as a taxpayer, i have a whole lot less problem kicking in for your kid's special orthotics... than i do for outfitting a convicted killer.

finally, you wanna come here and lecture people about volunteering... when you don't even do it yourself... you're gonna take some "hypocrisy time" lumps.

you get that, right?

my question to you is... putting aside footware for a moment... why does this guy even get to see daylight?

"and i'm criticising you... for supporting the "socialist mindthink" that says we have to warehouse 'a serial killer' for decades at taxpayer expense... never mind provide him with special designer shoes."

I don't support that. But that is the way our system currently is.

"finally, you wanna come here and lecture people about volunteering... when you don't even do it yourself... you're gonna take some "hypocrisy time" lumps."

Considering where my family and I would like to volunteer, we were told to wait until our children were older to do so. In the meantime the children and I volunteer once a month at the local foodbank. When the children are grown I will have more time to volunteer. I can only work within the limitations that I have. There is a season for everything. We also took in a troubled family member and helped her get sorted out. So we do what we can considering our limitations.

"my question to you is... putting aside footware for a moment... why does this guy even get to see daylight?"

I never said he did. But criticizing the system does not mean I'm soft on crime. The whole system needs to be overhauled to make it work for everyone involved.

well, we're totally on the same page on that one.

if it was up to me we'd pen this evil bastard up like a veal calf... in a cell so tight, he'd have trouble taking a crap.

and fwiw... unlike myself... i should mention mrs neo agrees with your original point about the shoes.
