Time to dump that silly...

"All men are created equal" nonsense... education professionals in Toronto say we have to get back to the good ol' days of segregation.
-- TORONTO -- Admitting it is failing some students of colour, the Toronto public board could open a black-focused school as early as next fall. Two community meetings are planned in the next week to discuss the idea of an "African-centred alternative school" from junior kindergarten to Grade 8 that would have more black teachers, black mentors, more focus on students' heritage and more parent involvement. The board has been piloting several "Africentric" social studies units in Grades 6, 7 and 8 at a handful of schools in the northwest part of the city and has run an Africentric summer camp near Jane and Finch in recent summers.
So how would the "black system" differ from the allegedly biased and apparently deficient "white system"?
At the summer camp last year, for example, students learned that Picasso based much of his work on masks from the Congo, that Africa had a university long before Europe – in Morocco – and students based a math grid on the patterns of lush "kente" cloth from Ghana's royalty.
And teachers are saying there's precedent for setting up separate systems.
The Toronto board already has a grade school and high school for First Nations students and an alternative high school for gay and lesbian teens.
Now, where is Dalton McSlippery on all this? Curiously, a couple of years ago, Dalton didn't seem too keen on black students being schooled in their own, well... monochromatic environment.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty opposed the notion of black-focused schools in 2005, after more than 500 parents and students called for such schools at a public forum on black achievement in Toronto. Noting he was "not comfortable with that concept," McGuinty said at the time: "I'm much more comfortable with the concept of bringing children from a variety of backgrounds together."
Except, of course, your McSlipperyness... when it involves private Muslim, Jewish or Christian schools. Apparently though... there are any number of people out there, who think it's perfectly acceptable and perhaps even morally imperative to set up a "race based" taxpayer funded system. It seems, to quote George Orwell, "Some animals are more equal than others."

Mbeki called Gevisser late one night in June to ask if he'd read a 2002 paper on AIDS, widely believed to have been written by Mbeki. Told that the author had, Mbeki nonetheless sent a driver around with an updated copy which had citations as recent as August 2006. The paper describes AIDS doctors as latter-day Josef Mengeles, the Nazi concentration camp doctor who performed cruel experiments, and black people who subscribe to the orthodox scientific AIDS approach as victims of a slave mentality. The paper claimed that Mbeki's spokesman Parks Mankahlana had been "vanquished by the antiretroviral drugs he was wrongly persuaded to consume," killed in 2002 by doctors who "remain free to feed others the same drugs." Among other things, the book says, Mbeki told Gevisser that he still questions that HIV causes AIDS; he believes that the main cause is not a virus but poverty and repeated exposure to sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis; and is convinced that the epidemic is "the latest racist weapon" being used against Africans.
LAST WORD:   Of course... it's just the racist system Because today, there's no such thing as a failed student.
"I believe institutions have to look at themselves first," Mr. Axworthy said. Several universities across the country have developed programs and outreach initiatives aimed at attracting aboriginal students and helping them succeed, but to date most have been one-time efforts, he said. That includes housing alternatives for students who often come to universities as single mothers or with extended families, as well as academic, cultural and financial support programs.
However, Lorrie Goldstein begs to differ
The real problem is exposed not by the detractors of this idea, but by the fatalism of its supporters -- who argue since nothing else has worked, let's try this "Hail Mary" pass, which is a stupid way to make public policy. So is tokenism. The root crisis here is not that schools are failing too many black children, but that their families are failing them long before they ever get to school, given absentee fathers, women having multiple children with multiple partners and gangs becoming the only "family" a child raised in such a dysfunctional environment often knows.

Hey. Dalton...

Tell me more about how you're fixing the health care system...
Jean Keegan spent one whole day last week sitting in a city medical clinic for 40 pills.

Keegan, 88, said there were other ways she could have spent her day but without a family physician and in need of prescriptions - which help her deal with an undiagnosed pain in her right side - she had no other choice.
My personal record down at Belleville General Emergency... is seven and a half hours with a sick, fevered child.

Maybe if Health Minister Smitherman can take a few moments from his campaign championing gay organ donors... he could see about getting us a few more doctors?

Pretty please.

Do you care what car choice I make when buying? Do you have a right to care? Do you care where I spend my money for my holidays? Do you have a right to say where I can shop for groceries? Do you have a right to say who supplies my undergarments?

I have a right to shop Walmart or Victoria's Secret, why should Health care be any different?

It's none of your freaking business how I spend my money on any service that is LEGAL in CANADA.

RELATED: I'm just glad the TDSB...

Has all that surplus cash just lying around.
The Toronto District School Board is set to spend at least $820,000 to help black students succeed -- with a plan that includes setting up an Africentric alternative school.

Less than a week before a special meeting where trustees will vote on creating the controversial school, the board released a report breaking down costs of four proposals aimed at black students.
Funny, though... seems not everybody is inside the tent here...
Trustee Josh Matlow told the Sun trustees are increasingly divided on the controversial issue and the vote will be close.

He said creating a black-focused school would lead to student segregation and tabled his own proposal as an alternative to the Africentric approach.

If you build it...

...and publicly flog the hell out of it... maybe, just maybe... they will come...
One Toronto public trustee won't stop ringing alarm bells over the city's first Africentric school. Trustee Josh Matlow told the Sun yesterday that nothing good can come of the fact that Toronto District School Board officials continue to downgrade enrolment forecasts for the proposed school that is supposed to open next fall.
Alarm bells, huh? What exactly is this guy Josh Matlow... well, according to the Toronto Sun anyway... getting so hysterical about?
"When they first initiated this project, they implied that students from across the system would be knocking on our door, that this is something that was of such great need for our system," Matlow said. "Now they have to push an aggressive marketing campaign to see if they can get the minimum of 40 students. They've said that they'd be able to maintain an Africentric school if they have the minimum of two classes, roughly 40 kids."
The thing is... however "aggressive" this marketing campaign may be... it sounds like pretty thin gruel to me.
Matlow said not enough information about the school's curriculum has been released. "They weren't able to tell us what the curriculum will be although they're asking parents to enrol their kids there."
I guess that's what's called the "hard, but shallow sell."

Whaddaya think, Dawg?

You gonna start calling Josh Matlow a racist?

Hey... this is 'Toronto the Good'

I thought we weren't allowed to track these kinds of statistics...
Trustees can't vote to create an Africentric school and then ignore higher dropout rates in other communities, one public trustee argues.

Toronto District School Board trustee Josh Matlow will introduce six motions tonight asking board staff to address an achievement gap among Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, Persian, Portuguese and Spanish-speaking students.
And Josh provides very specific numbers to bolster his argument.

I just can't for the life of me, imagine where... in oh, so politically correct Hogtown... he gets this kind of data.
In his motions, Matlow lists alarmingly high dropout rates for each group: Portuguese 43%, Hispanic 39%, Somali 37%, Persian 31%, Arabic (Farsi-speaking) 28% and Vietnamese 25%.
Paging Mayor Miller...

The actual cost of social engineering

Just something to think about Toronto... as you're signing that outrageous municipal tax cheque...
suckass political correctnessTotal enrolment.... six students. Makes you wonder what would have happened if the entire "community" hadn't been up in arms ramrodding this thing through.
“We haven’t given up on the program,” said Spence Tuesday night. But, “when you’ve got enrollment down across the board you can’t defend three teachers for six students.”

The program was originally conceived to have up to 60 Grade 9 students with plans to add another grade each year. Six of the students’ eight courses would be destreamed and taught through “an Africentric lens.”
Could it actually be that parents realised a certificate from Ebonics U. might not be doing their children such a service after all?

"Overwhelming public opposition to plans for an Afrocentric alternative school will not deter the Toronto District School Board from pressing ahead with the project, according to board chair John Campbell."

Opposition is even greater in the GTA, though the regional numbers have a higher margin of error. In the 905 area, support for the school sits at just 11 per cent, compared with 85 per cent against it.

Across Ontario, equally lopsided numbers of people said they see the plan as a form of segregation and would oppose any ethnically focused school.

LAST WORD: Been there, done that
He said during his tenure as superintendent for the Milwaukee School Board, members welcomed the idea for African-centred alternative schools with open arms.

The board opened a middle school and elementary school, but the former has since closed because of declining enrollment.
Once again... the triumph of hope over experience.

Let's face it: other Africans don't care much about starving Africans, or they wouldn't steal foreign aid from the mouths of their fellow citizens. The Great White Liberal doesn't really care, otherwise they'd never have banned DDT or fertilizer... He's just indulging in masturbatory/circle jerk moral exhibitionism.

Africa is a basketcase and that isn't my problem. Christianity was probably helping, but they seem to prefer Islam, with predictable results.

Sheila Ward probably did not expect her final public meeting as Toronto District School Board chair would mostly involve pounding her gavel, clearing the room and finally calling the meeting off. But that is what happened this past Wednesday night after mother Vickie McPhee, a social rights activist, took over the floor just after the meeting started, backed by supportive shouts from some of the 100-or-so supporters of a proposal to start an Africentric school next fall.
While others obviously don't...
And over at Toronto's Catholic board? While the TDSB's meeting was being shut down, the same night Catholic trustees quietly acclaimed their new chair, Catherine Leblanc-Miller.
Riot... or quiet... the new standard of caring.

Sheppard and Keele gets the nod...

As Canada returns to the good ol' days of segregation...
Canada's first Africentric alternative school will be a school within a school – not a free-standing building – and is being proposed for a wing of sprawling Sheppard Public School near the northwest corner of Sheppard Ave. W. and Keele St.

The pilot program, which Sheppard principal Ira Applebaum called an "exciting opportunity" in a letter last night to parents, would be open to children of any background across Toronto, from junior kindergarten to Grade 5, who would wish to enrol in September 2009.

It's "put up or shut up" time...

...for Toronto's black community.

It may not be fair, but such is the reality of the future of Toronto's first and embryonic Africentric school.

Within two months the Toronto District School Board will have to pull the plug on the controversial but absolutely essential pilot project – unless parents start enrolling their children.

But understand that no matter who is responsible for the slow enrolment so far – fewer than 20 kids have signed up – it is black folks who will wear the stigma of failure.
The TDSB thinks segregation is the answer to their problem?

Seriously?

LAST WORD: Oops... we mighta forgot something
The idea of having Oakwood Collegiate become an Africentric school this fall doesn’t sit well with the co-chairs of the Oakwood school council.

“No parent, teacher, student or community consultation has occurred,” Beth Davey and David Battiston wrote to school trustees.

“The school council does not support this recommendation and is outraged that the board would table a report for trustees to consider that includes a controversial recommendation for a new program with the potential to fundamentally change a community school without community consultation.”
Oh, c'mon now... Chris said it was okay with him.

Suck it up...

All you professional victims and perpetual whiners... and have the courage to address the real issues... that are feeding this culture of acceptable failure.
-- TORONTO -- Canadian public schools offer a good, fair and colour-blind education to every child in this country.

Teachers are not racist and if anything the trend of teaching and teaching theory is acutely liberal and leads people to bend over backwards, or leftwards, to accommodate all minorities and reject the host culture.
You can sit there in your welfare hellhole and blame it on "The Man"... or you can take some responsibility for the choices you have made and bust your ass to make things better.

Choose.

Choose wisely.
