If this is a priority for the Dion liberals...

I'd hate to see the stuff at the bottom of their list.

-- OTTAWA -- Liberal Leader St├ęphane Dion has written to the governor of Montana asking him to commute the death sentence of a convicted murderer from Canada.

Ronald Allen Smith was convicted of killing two Montana Indians in 1982.
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson replies...
“Individuals who commit multiple murders and mass-murders abroad . . . cannot count on the Canadian government to claim clemency and repatriation back to this country.”

FROM THE COMMENTS:
"we do not as Canadians support the death penalty..."
Funny...That's not what the poll says.

LAST WORD: Speaking of polls...

Another CTV propaganda piece goes awry...

The last time this issue arose I beleive it was Jean chretien who asked then Governor G Bush who politely said " thank you, mind your own damn business"

See, Liberals don't like it when they're told the truth. That's why they keep repeating the same questions..over, and over, and over, and over....

So... the current Harper government supports the death penalty. It is as simple as that and they can't have it both ways.

Guys like this Ron Smith are the dregs of society and beneath contempt, but we do not as Canadians support the death penalty, and thus, we bring these sorts home to rot in our jails until they die.

Either you have the death penalty or you don't. Change the law, or follow it.

Clearly this government doesn;t have the courage of its convictions.

And playing stupid partisan games about it, such as accusing those who support the traditional Canadian position ont his matter, of "supporting murderers" reflects poorly only on those simple minded enough to practise it.

not any more, we don't.

and we can use the 100,000 dollars per murderer per year we save... to hire more cops.

choke on it fidel.

Even if our government were to ask the Governor of Montana for clemency there is a huge doubt that it would be granted. The Liberals would ask anyway just to say they tried and could then ride away on their high horse. The Harper government respects the sovereignty of the US just as we would want ours respected.

exactly... this is simply political theatre, more fiberal smoke and mirrors... with the added bonus of steffi trying to stick a thumb in the harper government's eye.

Montana has the moral courage to defend their society by executing a person who would destroy that society - Liberals lack the moral courage to defend the only society in which they're allowed to live.

To latest "anon", what you are in effect saying is that your government, the Harper fgovernment, DOESN'T HAVE THE MORAL COURAGE of its convictions, as it won't re-introduce capital punishment in Canada.

What they are doing is probably the least courageous thing, which is to try to have it both ways, to appear to be mainstream and yet try to still maintain their base among neanderthals.

To "neo con", I have no lessons on capitalism to learn from you or your gov't, which is run by typical armchair critic political hacks who have not participated in capitalism. Obviously your conservatism does not extend beyond simply partisan sloganeering, as your supposedly conservative government is the highest spending government in Canadian history, spending at a higher clip than even the latter stages of the past Liberal government.

But that doesn't matter, right - only the slogans and the posturing.

Idiot.
So, how can you

"anon alleges.... I have no lessons on capitalism to learn from you or your gov't... the highest spending government in Canadian history"

you mean like the government of st. pierre trudeau... who took the national debt from 28 billion to 300 billion dollars over the course of his imperial reign?

good grief.

neo con fool:

So... in other words, you have no issue with your little Harper gov't hiking government spending both on an absolute basis and as a percentage of GDP.

I am sure you are also very consistent and as such also condemn the Mulroney gov't and most of all the Bush gov't who took a massive surplus and turned it into the largest deficit in history in no time.

But they call themselves "conservative" so that's ok, right?

I am equally sure that you will give Paul Martin no credit for doing what his "conservative" predecessors lacked the courage to do.

Brainless hack blowhards like yourself give real conservatives a bad name.

of course, you mean real conservatives like (cough) yourself... who obviously have no preconceived notions, or ax to grind.

thank you for sharing your wisdom, benevolent sir.

BWSAAAHAAAAHAAAhaa!!!! Look out our freeped online poll! It says the death penalty is TEH AWESOME!q!

Seriously...to the reader who casually happened past this site: the best thing you can do is just laugh at these people. Don't incite them.

I think we should support the death penalty on one condition: if the verdict turns out to be wrong, then the jury, prosecution and judge draw straws. The shortest gets put to death, too. An eye for an eye, right? Consider it as a deterrence to unjust sentencing.
