We interrupt today's Taser hysteria...

For a word from Ontario's deputy chief coroner...

"I am absolutely convinced tasers will save lives instead of taking lives. And I hope some day, if I am in the position, please taser me before you shoot me."
Now back to our regularly scheduled, overwhelmingly leftwing media feeding frenzy...

Repeat after me: Schreiber. Taser. Taser. Schreiber.

RELATED: Enough with the Taser horseshit

Bring me a real tragedy.
Across India, as many as 10 million female fetuses may have been aborted over the past 20 years, according to a study published in the British medical journal, the Lancet, last year.

"We have found female fetuses by the sackful, floating down drains."

The armed forces service police used long batons. These allow the wielder to stay out of harms way while allowing control of a subject. They have worked for decades. They may not be convenient to carry, but they do NOT kill people.

Statistics are real. A small percentage of fatalities does not make a technique safe. If you are one of the susceptible ones, it is 100% fatal!

That's cute. An article about how Taser International is paying our Deputy Coroner to fly around the continent on their dime shilling for their product, and you simply quote the coronor shilling, and conclude that this means the dangers are hyped.

Nice.

Why not just cut out the middle-man and post a press release right from the company?

see, lko... i had no idea you had evidence that the deputy coroner, a medical doctor and heretofore respected public servant, was taking money from a corporate identity to lie about the dangerous effects of this product.

i will be emailing the coroner your impeccable and very public judgement regarding his character and asking him why he is engaging in this shameful and possibly criminal behaviour.

i trust you will be able to prove your allegation to the coroner... or his attorney.

sorry... you can kill someone with an ornamental ashtray... by using the right vector, or enough force.

here's a fact... you're not going apeshit in a public venue... you're not gonna get tasered.

and, as i've said previously, regarding "polish airport guy", there was no malice here... the gods of statistical anomaly just called him home.

Well, neoconservative, good to see that you're right there on the front lines helping libel chill keep the internet free of, well, unfettered freedom. Keep up the good work.

Please be sure not to tell the Coroner that I said that he "was taking money from a corporate identity to lie about the dangerous effects of this product" though. Because I never said they paid him to speak, I said they paid him to fly (though admittedly the wording could have been more clear, they "paid for his flights" not "paid him to fly", I suppose), and I CERTAINLY never said he lied. Not once. I said they paid for him to fly around the continent, which is EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS (at least according to the Globe, maybe you should send some quotes from the Globe article to the poor man and his lawyers too!). Dr. Cairn also says that Taser paid for his hotel rooms, btw (again, according to the Globe).

Now, perhaps "shilling" was a bit harsh. I'll admit that that bit of hyperbole is "over-the-top". However, I don't see how much worse it is than the Globe's description of the Doctor as "one of the top Canadian experts Taser officials turn to for help shoring up public support for their products in times of crisis". Shilling is harsh, but not terribly more so than "shoring up public support for their products in times of crisis". (and my comment here isn't quite the same as an article in "Canada's National Newspaper").

Dr Cairn's has (according to the Globe, who apparently interviewed him) gone to conferences organized by Taser International, on flights paid for by Taser International, and stayed in hotels rooms paid for by Taser International where he proclaimed at said conferences that he's "absolutely convinced tasers will save lives instead of taking lives".

If the coroner or his attorney are upset that the fact that Taser paid for the flights and hotel rooms is now public I highly doubt they'll come after little old me. Perhaps my little post wasn't as artfully phrased as the Globe and Mail's nationally published piece, but I didn't say anything the G&M didn't.

Feel free to imply that I did say those things you claim I said (but didn't) if you like though. I for one would never threaten to set attorney's loose on someone over a comment on a blog! Good thing too eh? 'Cause it CERTAINLY wasn't me who suggested the Doctor's behaviour was "possibly criminal". I certainly agree with the Globe's assessment that it "raises questions about the appearance of bias when probing the issue of whether tasers can kill". But "possibly criminal"??? I don't know where you get that idea. I certainly would never suggest it was possibly criminal behaviour. Perhaps my use of the word "shilling" implies "shameful" (and as I said, that may have been an overuse of hyperbole on my part) but "possibly criminal"? I don't think that's quite fair.

dear lord k...

i take it from your convoluted, near terror-stricken 600 word "you can't get there from here" love letter... that you have reconsidered your rather hasty remarks regarding the integrity of dr cairns.

i'd say my work here is done.

oh, yeah... just a suggestion... say what you mean... and mean what you say.

your pal... neo

Neo,

It's not so much that you scared me into recanting (though it's good to know that you apparently feel that scaring those who disagree with you into reconsidering their stance is "your work") so much as I realized that my first post did come off as attacking Cairns, whereas my intention was to attack YOU.

You took one quote from an article that "raises questions about the appearance of bias when probing the issue of whether tasers can kill" and simply used it to assert that the issue is an "overwhelmingly leftwing media feeding frenzy..." Meanwhile, you conveniently leave out things such as the article's title ("Taser firms picked up coroner's lecture tab") and inconvenient facts such as that the man you were quoting is one of the "experts Taser officials turn to for help shoring up public support for their products in times of crisis" or that he gives lectures on "a medically unrecognized term that the company often cites as a reason people die after being tasered". The whole article was raising questions as to the perception of bias in Dr. Cairns' work, and you chose to simply quote Dr. Cairns as though we should all just move along now, as Unquestionable Authority has spoken. To the extent I've attempted to clarify my post, it was simply because I didn't actually intend to attack Cairns (I do think it's unseemly to pile on) I intended to attack YOU for treating Cairns' words as though they were brought down from a mountain (which I found particularly shocking given the context of the article).

That said, am I to infer from your threats and mockery that you agree with the Doctor that having Taser International pay for his flights and hotel rooms is kosher? 'Cause as far as I'm concerned, anyone in a position of power vouching for the efficacy of product X shouldn't have ANY of their bills paid by the company that makes product X. Not even something as seemingly innocuous as airfare and hotel accommodations. I'm also shocked that that doesn't seem to be blatantly obvious to everyone.

And you should feel free to tell anyone you like that I said that.

(Also, it just bugs me when fellow bloggers threaten to go running to mommy and daddy, so that got me going too. So apologies for the long comments. To save you time checking, this one's 403 words).

"his lordship explains... it just bugs me when fellow bloggers threaten to go running to mommy and daddy, so that got me going too"

it bugged you? judging from your previous missive, i think the word you're looking for here... is terrified.

c'mon, fess up... when you realised you had overstepped and potentially libelled a man who has both a certain amount of expertise... and pretty deep pockets, your asshole immediately went into uncontrollable convulsions, didn't it?

and enough jiggery-pokery about tasers already... my guess is, exponentially more people in canada are asphyxiated by their filet-mignon every year... than are killed by tasers.

evil tasers have recently become a silly, misguided rallying-cry for every che-wannabe in the rainbow coloured socialist tent.

you wanna get some sympathy... take it on over to rabble or liblogs... cos i'm just not buyin' any here.

but if you really wanna get outraged, you sensitive new-age guy... give me a thousand words about 10 million aborted female fetuses.

yeah... that's what i thought.
