I blame Steven Jobs
Police say 20-year-old Ervin Garcia, of Toronto, had been arguing with another man about property - possibly an iPod - the man may have taken from him. There are unconfirmed reports Toronto City Council is throwing together special legislation to ban digital music players within Toronto city limits.
The suspect then reportedly pulled a handgun out of his clothing and during a struggle, the firearm went off, striking the third man.

You may have hit on the motherlode of nannystate interference. I like your idea, it is so simple and enforceable. The mayor should ban all bling, expensive runners, jackets, purses etc. He could reduce the crime and decrease unemployment at the same time with all the new hires for bylaw enforcement. Does this sound like the Taliban? Enforcement tool of choice, canes.
And I'm sure the "Golf Club as Weapon" Committee will be struck soon:

I hear of these shootings on streetcars, buses, reports that shooter left the scene on a bike.
Whatever happened to gangsters driving Escalades ? Gangsterism doesn't sound like a very profitable business these days.

"anon asks... Whatever happened to gangsters driving Escalades?" --
i think most of the thugs nowadays don't really have all that much ambition beyond taking shit off their prey. you bring an escalade back to welfare hell... you're just asking to be guzzled up by a bigger shark.
you got some meth and a saturday night special... you are ready to live the life. and then you go home and get mom to cook something to eat before starting all over.

Well, just finished "Freakanomics", and one of the main points was about crack dealers, and why they live at home with their mommies.
Turns out that, like all organized crime, the bosses make most of the money. They other guys are expendable and don't make any money. In the one gang studied, the 100 top guys made 50% of the money. The other 2,000 members had to split the rest....
