A Muslim woman weighs in

An interesting take on the Aqsa Parvez story from an unlikely venue... the usually exquisitely politically correct CBC.
Meanwhile, the mullahs and Islamists are busy dismissing the idea that Aqsa's alleged murder had anything to do with religion. They are circulating rumours on-line that she had a black boyfriend, that she was sexually promiscuous, that she was a drug pusher.
I had no idea that this sort of thing had been going on. As a Muslim herself, the author of this article is obviously closer to the goings on within the community.
The friends and classmates of Aqsa, who aren't concerned with political correctness, have said without hesitation that Aqsa was abused and threatened at home because of the religious fanaticism of her family.

They have said she was killed because she wanted to be herself.
FROM THE COMMENTS:
"In fact not one single Muslim I know agrees with what he did and we all pray that God bless this little girls soul and may God keep her in his mercy and bring her the justice she deserves after suffering through what was done to her."
LAST WORD: Michael Coren has his say
Only a bigot would argue that every Muslim was violent or opposed to Western freedom. But only a coward or a liar would argue that there was not a profound and deeply worrying link between conservative Islam and myriad acts of terror, intolerance and hysterical anger.

It is not I who say this but the countless Muslims who take to the streets at the drop of a cartoon to scream for blood and war; or the Muslims who preach jihad in North America and Europe, where they enjoy open societies founded on Christian enlightenment.

They may represent a minority, but the harm they do is incalculable. This dysfunctional venom does not come from Christian, Jew, Hindu or Buddhist and fatuous relativism will only blind the foolish.

It is time for free discussion in this free country, whether it offends or not.
And what... pray tell... is the deal with Turkey?

Anyone?

Another culturally appropriate solution?

Sure... let's ask Aqsa Parvez...
A Quebec judge has ordered a mother who allegedly stabbed her teenage daughter in the head and chest to undergo a psychological evaluation. The defence lawyer recommended the woman — a native of Afghanistan — be sent to hospital for a 30-day evaluation. Montreal police say the incident has all the hallmarks of a so-called honour crime.
Hang on a second... what was it that the CIC had to say about this stuff?
"I don't want the public to think that this is really an Islamic issue or an immigrant issue," said Mohamed Elmasry of the Canadian Islamic Congress. "It is a teenager issue."
Sorry, Mo... I'm gonna have to call bullshit. I can't speak for anyone else... but in my childhood home... the punishment for this sort of stuff usually didn't involve the death penalty.

FROM THE COMMENTS:
"In my family we got grounded...not undergrounded."
Once again, we see the perils of "cultural relativism."

BREAKING: Guilty plea in "honour killing"
In a stunning development, Aqsa Parvez’s father and youngest brother admitted on Tuesday they strangled her in her bedroom.
So much for Mo Elmasry's... "teenager issue."
The agreed upon statement of facts contains an interview with Aqsa's mother, Anwar Jan, who attempts to explain why the murder happened. In an interview with police, she says her husband told her he killed his youngest child because "this is my insult."
"My community will say, 'You have not been able to control your daughter.' This is my insult. She is making me naked."
Police asked if things would have been different if the family had stayed in Pakistan. "He would have killed her there too," she says.

See, here's the part you're not seeing

THIS IS NOT WAZIRISTAN, BRO:
Too many so-called spokespeople in the Islamic community just don't get it.

There is absolutely no way, not one possible way... NOT ONE, YOU FREAKS... to justify strangling a 16 year-old girl.
-- Mississauga -- Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Alnadvi, Imam director of the Al-Falah Islamic Centre in Oakville, denounced the killing and said there were other problems the teen was facing.
But Mo, you're not really talking about the problems Aqsa Parvez was facing.  You're talking about... and incredibly... attempting to justify... why Daddy Dearest killed his own daughter.
"Some information that I am gathering is that the issue was bigger than the hijab. That was one of the issues. But this girl, she refused to stay at home and she was out of the home and there was the feeling that she was going in the wrong direction because she was living with other people."
THIS IS CANADA:

Mohammad, buddy, here's what you and your friends seem to be missing... this is not some primitive village in the tribal hinterlands of Pakistan.   We don't even execute people like Clifford Olsen, or Paul Bernardo... never mind defiant teenage girls

UPDATE: El-Mo decides to start over

Mohamed Elmasry, President of the Canadian Islamic Congress... after initially stepping on his dick... by characterising the murder of Aqsa Parvez as a "teenager issue"... has hastily reissued a less inflammatory statement.
"In the sombre light of the recent tragic death of our community’s 16-year-old sister and daughter, Aqsa Parvez of Toronto, our national organization is taking immediate educational measures to ensure that such sad ending of a young life never happens again among Canadian Muslims."
Way to audible, Peyton. (via FFOF)

FROM THE COMMENTS:
Ahmed says... "In conclusion, I do not accept what *some* scholars are claiming, nor do I accept what *some* terrorists are doing, and in my book, that doesn't make me a bad Muslim, because after all I believe in peace and equality for all humans, and in my book I believe that makes me a better human!"
"I consider any and all mischievous actions as bad, not MUSLIM bad, not CHRISTIAN bad, not JEWISH bad, JUST BAD!"
Well, Ahmed, I see the overall point you're trying to make here.  You do get that characterising strangling a teenage girl as a "mischievous action" is gonna upset a few folks, right?

The Texas cab driver accused of murdering his two teenage daughters more than a decade ago was unhappy that they were dating non-Muslims and was unwilling to raise "whores as daughters," according to his family.

Yaser Abdel Said, 63, of Lewisville, was apprehended Wednesday after more than 12 years on the FBI’s “Top Ten” list of most-wanted fugitives.

RELIGION OF DEATH

COMPARE AND CONTRAST:

Let's see if all the people who have been losing their minds over tasers... are equally sympathetic... in this case.
"At 7:55 a.m., we received a 911 call from a man claiming that he had just killed his daughter," Constable J.P. Valade of Peel Police said. Some of the teen's schoolmates said the Grade 11 student had rebelled against her parents recently by refusing to wear a hijab.
Funny... the Globe and Mail isn't allowing any comments on this particular article.

The silence around this thing is deafening.
"Feminists had no response to this tragedy. They were last seen celebrating their victory over a popular doll's exaggerated breast size while advocating the unhindered destruction of unborn babies."
RELATED:  Apparently, almost everybody saw this coming
Aqsa's school chums at Applewood Heights Secondary School say she wanted to break free from the cultural restraints imposed by family. Friend Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson, 16, said Aqsa told her something could possibly "happen."
"She was scared to go home," she said. Aqsa had recently been staying with a friend and wanted to return home to get her belongings, friends said.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST:  Dalton fiddles while Ontario burns...
Premier Dalton McGuinty is considering banning smoking in a car with a child passenger, calling the behaviour "reprehensible." McGuinty said yesterday he's "listening" to the debate generated by Liberal MPP David Orazietti's private member's bill that would empower police to pull over vehicles where a child is being exposed to second-hand smoke.
Secondhand smoke - reprehensible... honour killing... silence.

LAST WORD:  What's behind Door #2.
Ausma Khan, the editor-in-chief of Toronto-based Muslim Girl magazine, said research into the readership of her publication shows that the decision to wear the hijab – the traditional Muslim headscarf – is almost always a choice the girl makes on her own.

You can't say he isn't an equal-opportunity hater.
-- CAIRO -- Osama bin Laden released a new message Sunday denouncing Arab leaders for sacrificing the Palestinians. He singled out the head of Shiite Hezbollah, saying he did not really have the strength to take on Israel.
Wouldn't you just love to see the jihadis start to guzzle each other?
“Those [Arab] kings and leaders sacrificed Palestine and Al-Aqsa to keep their crowns,” Mr. bin Laden said, referring to Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, one of Islam's holiest sites.

15 July 2010

Chalk up another one for that...

..."broad-strata" daughter strangling phenomena...
-- CALGARY -- Aset Magomadova will not go to jail for strangling her teenage daughter with a head scarf at their northeast Calgary home more than three years ago, a Queen Bench's justice ruled on Thursday. Justice Sal LoVecchio gave Magomadova a suspended sentence Thursday with three years of probation, for killing Aminat, 14, on Feb. 26, 2007. “The Crown said incarceration is required for respect for the law. I do not agree."
Oh, yeah... she didn't strangle her... she "applied a ligature"...
"I find that Ms. Magomadova, by choosing to apply a ligature -- in this case, a scarf -- for at least 2 1/2 minutes, was the application of excessive force," said LoVecchio.
Sounds a little bit like those "neck compressions" used on Aqsa Parvez... To quote (and I wrote it down, so I wouldn't screw it up) talking-head Lloyd Robertson...
"Her neck was compressed, to the point she couldn't breathe."
I truly fear for my country.

UPDATE:  Via Blazing Cat Fur...

You've just strangled your own child... what's the first thing you do? Apparently not CPR... or call 911...
According to an agreed statement of facts, Magomadova and her troubled 14-year-old daughter got into an argument in front of the girl's brother and aunt. The mother and daughter took the fight into a sewing room. Neither called out for help, and the mother later emerged to announce that her daughter was dead. Magomadova made several long-distance phone calls to Europe with a calling card before dialling 911.
Seems just a tad cold-blooded to me.

...DOES trump basic human decency... at the University of Guelph, anyway...
Traversy and Geller aren't giving up. They have $4,000 collected and are determined to make sure it somehow goes to mark and celebrate the life of Aqsa Parvez. "Maybe we will do something for her in Israel," Geller said.
"Although, it would be a shame there is not some sort of memorial for this girl in Canada, the country in which she lived."
And the country where she was allegedly murdered for wanting to be Canadian.

UPDATE: One small correction

In an earlier post, I pointed out that Mohamed Elmasry, President of the Canadian Islamic Congress, was being uncharacteristically silent on the Aqsa Parvez murder.
It turns out ol' Mo does indeed have something to say...
"I don't want the public to think that this is really an Islamic issue or an immigrant issue," said Mohamed Elmasry of the Canadian Islamic Congress. "It is a teenager issue."
Well... thank goodness we cleared that up. Damn teenagers... somebody should just, well... uh...

UPDATE:  Oops... here comes another little tweak
United Muslim Women of Canada's Anisa Ali said the public shouldn't assume that honour killings only happen in the Muslim community. She said honour killings are not limited to Islamic countries like Pakistan, Jordan, Syria and Afghanistan.
I've gotta say, Anisa... we're a little old-fashioned around these parts. Trotting out the venerable "all the other guys are doing it" defense... well, that just might not be your best move here.

UPDATE2:  CAIR-CAN weighs in
A spokesman for the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) said he is dubious of opinions that the girl's death resulted from a clash of cultures.
"Teen rebellion is something that exists in all households in Canada and is not unique to any culture or background," CAIR-CAN's Sameer Zuberi said in an interview. "Domestic violence is also not unique to Muslims."
LAST WORD: I'll have the Spinbot Special

Who knows how many hours it took for the obviously unapologetic weasel-wordsmiths at CTV news, to come up with a way to report this story... without actually using the word "strangle." To quote (and I wrote it down, so I wouldn't screw it up) talking-head Lloyd Robertson...
"Her neck was compressed, to the point she couldn't breathe."
Good grief.

FROM THE COMMENTS:
'neck compression' - makes it sound like some kind of yoga exercise. Nice.

Who mourns for Aqsa Parvez?

I'LL GIVE YOU A HINT:
It ain't the local "Muslim community"...
Her death struck a nerve with a local fire chief and councillor in a community they say represents "small-town Canadian values."
But enough about the decent workaday folk of Pelham, Ontario.

Let's hear from the Canadian Council of Muslim Women...
"I have some difficulty with what they are trying to say in the inscription. Maybe they are trying to raise questions but I'm not quite sure the inscription reflects her death."
Reflects? Seriously?  Heck, we don't need a reflection, do we?

How about it, Alia... do you have any difficulty with this?
Peel police said at the time of her death that her father called 911 and confessed to strangling his youngest daughter in their Mississauga home that morning.
A word of advice to Islamic community spokespersons & associations... trotting out the venerable "all the other guys are doing it" defense...

That just might not be your best move here.
