-- OTTAWA -- Parliament rejected a Liberal amendment to the Conservative budget Monday night, closing one more door on a possible election.*
The amendment, which referred to “an NDP-like lack of fiscal prudence” was crafted to be completely unpalatable to the New Democrats whose support was needed for it to pass, and only seven Liberals turned out for the vote.
Had the amendment received the approval of the House of Commons, the Conservatives said they would have declared they had lost the confidence of Parliament and the country would have been plunged into an election.
