Hey, Jacko

Are these the kind of people you're gonna negotiate with?

And guess what... these are ostensibly the good guys...

-- KABUL -- An Afghan court on Tuesday sentenced a 23-year-old journalism student to death for distributing a paper he printed off the Internet that three judges said violated the tenets of Islam, an official said.

The three-judge panel sentenced Sayad Parwez Kambaksh to death for distributing a paper that humiliated Islam, said Fazel Wahab, the chief judge in the northern province of Balkh, where the trial took place. Judge Wahab did not preside over the trial.
Obviously, free speech doesn't get along all that well with Islam.

That sounds so familiar.

I have a huge problem with this one. This is not the type of "Democracy" that I want my Canadian sons and daughters to DIE for in Afghanistan. It will be hard to defend our mission if they continue with this sort of Justice.

democracy? what democracy?

that's why we're over there... to stem the tide of fanatical islamo-fascism and give the populace a chance to get to democracy.

this incident just shows how deeply this shit is embedded over there.

surely you wouldn't wish for anyone to have to live under this type of oppression?

Excuse me if I misunderstood the article, my understanding is that this happened in a secure area in Afghanistan, if there is such a thing. The fact that this ruling took place in a part of the "new" Democratic Afghanistan is very troubling to me.

No I do not want ANYONE to have to live under laws so oppressive. I want women/children to have access to medical care, education and all to have the freedom to survive in a manner more befitting then my dog.

It is just very discouraging that this is how that possible freedom is NOT applied. I just woke up to the fact that just because you give governments an opportunity to help their people not all civil servants, judges will embrace or even understand what a gift or opportunity they have.

A little like how do you change a thought or comfort pattern of an addict. They know it's not right, they know they can live better. They really want to, but putting it into practise,......They haven't a clue.

sorry... we're talking about a people who have long been living under a theological system... that would dearly love to turn back the historical clock to the 1500s.

so we're talking baby steps for a lot of people... and that includes a lot of the entrenched religious and societal leaders.

the western educated political elites like pervez musharraf in pakistan and hamid karzai in afghanistan have their jobs cut out for them.

is it somethng worth fighting for?

i think so.

I wish them well.

"is it something worth fighting for?"

Defiantly, heartbreakingly, yes it is.
