The key policy selling point for Muskrat Falls was all green. By building “clean” hydro power in remote Labrador, Newfoundland could wean itself off fossil fuels, close a provincial oil-burning power plant, and export power to Nova Scotia and other regions.
The publicly announced cost figure for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Muskrat Falls green hydropower mega boondoggle is now $12.7 billion, double the original project estimate of $6.2 billion.
The bad news is that there is no real market for the electricity.
