The man is obviously insane and belongs in a padded cell for the rest of his life. But you knuckedraggers obviously can't understand that.
I will grant you that there is a miniscule chance only that this man has his reason and senses and plotted this out of some deviant, sociopathic motivation, to gain attention and commit an evil act. But this does not have the hallmarks of a sane man. He was unemotional and did this act at random in a crowded bus. There was no means getting away or killing more victims, and he did not kill himself. We will know soon which it was.
The man is probably bipolar with psychotic symptoms, paranoid schizophrenic, or having some other condition of the mind that causes him delusions, hallucinations, and an inability to understand or control his actions.
But again, you knuckledraggers don't care. Blood must be had for blood, even if it is some pitiable, contemptible insane man's blood, at the expense of society's dignity and humanity.

Whether he did it sane or did it in a mentally ill stupor, the result is still a gruesome bloodbath. Why should it matter why? If someone is capable of perpetrating this kind of violence, it's foolish to start splitting psychological hairs.

Well, anon, I'm against the death penalty and said basically what you said here yesterday. He is insane. I don't think we need to probe too deep here.
That said, don't pretend that the "knuckedraggers" are much wrong in calling for his death. Locking a guy up for the rest of his life, as you put it, is also wrong. Taking away somebody's freedom that way is against his human rights. Don't believe me? Ask the Quakers, or any human rights group.
We are dealing with protecting society, however, and we have to balance his human rights with safety.
So locking him up for the rest of his life it is.

the guy who did it was hospitalised, medicated and released after a while... because, hey... it's not his fault, right?

Oh, I know, I'm hoping against hope. I'd like to see the Scottish charge of "guilty, but insane" as opposed to our wimpy "not guilty by reason of insanity". Sure, his BRAIN might not be guilty, but we should be able to put the BODY that committed the crime behind bars. Maybe the shrinks can keep his brain alive in a jar or something.

why is it... if there had been a cop on the bus... it would have been okay to kill this guy for what he was intent on doing... but, after the fact, not okay to execute him for actually doing it?
