The murderer is described...

...by the media, as a "long-time family friend."
-- Toronto -- A seven-year-old girl was found dead early Sunday morning and her 29-year-old guardian was charged with second-degree murder after police responded to a 911 call from the west-end apartment building where they lived.

She was the youngest of three homicide victims over a violent holiday weekend in Toronto.

RELATED: Speaking of "violent holiday weekend"
A 37-year-old man visiting Toronto for Caribana was shot in a botched robbery attempt early Sunday morning.

Police said the Rochester, N.Y., man was performing a card trick for some passersby just before 2:15 a.m. near Bay Street and Richmond Street West when three men approached the man and attempted to steal his gold necklace.

UPDATE: This little girl never had a chance
Police arrested Irving, a trusted friend of the young girl's mother for at least a decade, and have charged her with second-degree murder.

Sampson said she gave over care of Katelynn to Irving while she dealt with "personal problems," which she wouldn't specify.

Irving became Katelynn's caregiver in January, Ryan said, despite having a history with social services and a criminal record of "some violence." She has four of her own biological children, two of whom were in their father's care.
