This town on Lake Scugog northeast of Whitby made national headlines last week when the municipal union -- CUPE Local 1785-01 -- filed a grievance against a councillor who lowered the flag following a Canadian soldier's death last month because its collective agreement with the municipality has flag lowering written in as a union job. It's the kind of chutzpah that would make Tony Soprano blush.
Sunday's flag lowering, said Drebit, was done by a town hall maintenance worker -- at a cost.I'm guessing a minimum of 4 hours at time and a half... for 2 minutes work. No wonder all our jobs are heading south.
"I'm sure some compensation will have to be paid," she said. "You can't call someone in on a holiday weekend and not pay them."
