They've got us over a barrel here... we're obviously dealing with the Gretzkys of garbage...
Vancouver's striking outside workers will not be heading back to the job without a signing bonus, the union representing its 1,800 members said.

Yes, CUPE 1004 Local President Mike Jackson has said that signing bonuses are going to be placed on the table. Two things: (1) the corresponding inside workers' union, CUPE 15, got signing bonuses the last time around, and (2) after five weeks on strike, eight months since contract expiration, and with all the garbage the City has thrown up, something a little better than was achieved by the other municipalities without strikes probably has to be the union's position. In other words, this is just about negotiation.
Mayor Sam Sullivan has been the worst part of this. He intervened repeatedly at the beginning, precipating the labour action and then making matters worse. Now he denies responsibility. As I have written repeatedly at "Radical Tory" (http://radicaltory.blogspot.com) I have come to think the city has a lot to answer for in this strike.
I have an idea. Fire them all and then hire people willing to work for the money.
Why are we paying large salaries for a job that anyone can do?

maybe jack layton could answer that question.
