Wait...this actually happened in Canada?

I was under the impression that the only legal defense of our lives was to curl into the fetal position and pray that our assailant got tired or bored before he could finish beating us to death...and if not, well, at least we could fade away knowing that the Canadian 'justice system' would do their very best to bring the perpetrator to account, right?
