Straight from the 'grassy knoll'

Is there any crazy shit from decades past that can't be woven into a conspiracy theory and laid at the feet of evil, racist anglo society?

'An Inuit "truth commission" is investigating long-standing accusations that Mounties slaughtered sled dogs in the 1950s and 1960s to force their owners to give up their traditional lifestyle, officials said yesterday.'
Let's make sure we get PETA involved here too.

LAST WORD:
Back in the real world
During this election, I thought that the Conservatives would be able to nail Caledonia right into McGuinty’s forehead. However, John Tory is not hammering on this issue for fear of hitting himself on the Ipperwash thumb.

Without John Tory forcing this issue, the media is not forced to cover it, and in fact, is content not to.
It's the "crazy" wheel that gets the grease.

Of course none of this had anything to do with the advent of reliable ski-doos.

Hell, traditional practices include jack lighting deer. The SCoC provides this brilliant decision here:

http://www.thestar.com/News/article/163950

OTTAWA – A sharply divided Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the treaty right of a B.C. native band to hunt deer at night, saying the practice isn't necessarily dangerous.

The 4-3 ruling Thursday could spark similar treaty claims by bands elsewhere in Canada, although they may have to resolve any resulting disputes on a case-by-case basis.

The decision overturns the convictions of Ivan Morris and Carl Olsen on charges of violating the B.C. Wildlife Act.

The men, members of the Tsartlip Indian Band on Vancouver Island, were apprehended after firing at a decoy deer set up by conservation officers to trap people hunting illegally after dusk with the aid of lights.

So if I understand correctly, whitey forced the noble natives to abandon their traditional way of life unless the technology whitey brought was an advantage. In those cases this technology was grandfathered into the traditional ways and is now considered a treaty right.

Either that or Thomas Alva Cardinal invented the light bulb.

Aboriginals recently used the sacred, traditional, spiritual .50cal machine gun on a whale off the West coast - we must bow to their sacred ways and accept all blame inperpetuity...

As we noted over at DMB a while back, "pitlamping" was a tradition among the Manitoba Natives. Those who didn't pitlamp set out salt licks, and waited for the deer to arrive. Between the pitlampers and the "salt baiters" there were a few of us who actually bought licences, and hunted in daytime.

We usually weren't as successful as the other type.

As to the RCMP slaughtering sled dogs, it was probably due to an outbreak of rabies or distemper. We had outbreaks of those canine diseases back in the early 60's, and the cops had to shoot quite a few animals, and not just those of the natives, either.

It wouldn't make any sense at all to try to destroy the Inuits ability to hunt, as then they'd become wards of the government. I haven't heard yet of politicians who like to spend money on something for which there is no political return.

Another "truther" outbreak here?
