Mayor David Miller yesterday rejected the notion that councillors should do away with perks to help manage the city's financial crisis.
He noted, however, he cancelled a $1.2-million expansion of his second-floor City Hall office in July, when warning that service cuts were coming.
"The first cut was not community centres, it was my office budget that was the first cut," Miller said. "I've done my part."
Miller also defended councillors' controversial $53,100-a-year budgets. "The office budget isn't a perk. The office budget is about communicating with residents," the mayor said.
