Too many Chiefs, er... handouts...

...not enough auditors...another 90 millionWow... lemme get this straight... wooden shacks, no plumbing... obviously this racist Conservative government is intent on starving aboriginal populations into submiss... wait a minute...

Since 2006, the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs alone has provided approximately $80 million (CBC News tonight said it was actually $92 million) to Attawapiskat First Nation, which does not including funding the community will receive this fiscal year.”

According to the 2001 Census, the population of Attawapiskat was just under 1300 people. That means one federal government ministry gifted the community with over $61,000 for every individual on the reserve.
Question number one here has to be... what's happening to all that cash? And that's a question that applies not just to Attawapiskat... but right across the breadth of this country.

Some folks, somewhere... are sitting on a Tony Montana size mountain 'o cash.

Which brings us back to the actual problem here. If, despite this annual obscene infusion of billions of taxpayer dollars, aboriginal peoples are still living in abject poverty... apart, of course, from the aforementioned epidemic of widescreen televisions... it's because their (cough, cough) "leaders" are screwing them over.

And that, my friends, is part of a bigger picture.

The oft-quoted figure of 8 to 12 billion dollars gifted annually to First Nations communities seems to be one of the largest continuing expenses in the federal budget... and it's obviously not working.

Well, I'm with Kathy Shaidle... it's time to think outside the sweatlodge...
The solution to Canada’s intractable “Indian problem” seems obvious: Give every card-carrying native one million dollars cash, tax-free. (It will be the last tax-free perk they’ll ever enjoy and the last government entitlement they’ll be eligible to receive.)

In return, they drop all treaty disputes and other suits against the government and the Catholic Church. Then they move off the reserves.

This Crown land will be turned into toxic waste dumps and - assuming some of the natives get homesick - maximum-security prisons.
Every aboriginal a millionaire... no more 10 billion taxpayer dollars down the toilet every year.

Win-win... right?

Well, yes...but probably a bit too radical for Canadian sensibilities. Right now I'd settle for just one politician or journalist to gather the courage to at least *mention* the words "native self-government" on-air. Just say what they've all been tiptoeing around so very carefully these last few days: that the only way to solve these kinds of problems (and not every reserve has them, BTW) is for the government to bypass the Chief and Band Council and allocate\distribute the money themselves where it is actually needed.

Yes, the natives will scream bloody murder. Let them. Enough is enough.

the first thing to do here is acknowledge that the self-ruled reserve system is a dismal failure. allowing individual chiefs to rule over their subjects like medieval kings is so obviously not the answer.

the endemic corruption of this flawed system has spawned wave after wave of native on native criminality & violence.

and it is killing (and that's not a figure of speech) their children...

"Statistics Canada calculates that more than half of native kids are living in poverty; ¾ drop out of school before completing Grade 12; the incarceration rate of aboriginal men is 11 times that of non-native men; of women, it is 250 times the rate for non-native women."

it's time to throw away the rose-coloured glasses and see all this suckass political correctness for the condescending shit that it is.

even teflon jean chretien, who has an adopted aboriginal son, was buried in a whirlwind of shit when he tried to reform the "sacred" indian act... but it is something that just has to be done.

the answer here... and stop me if you've heard this before... is one people, one law.

Interesting,in the original story, there were just under 1300 people living in Attawapiskat. Slowly, but surely, the number has increased to where MSM are reporting 2000 population.

It makes the per-person allocation look worse,I guess. Those uncaring Harper fascists!!!

The Native Industry will only be changed IF the Native politicians come on board, and they'd have to be crazy to do that.

Most of them couldn't run a lemonade stand, but right now they're CHIEF,of a FIRST NATION,no less! They get to rub elbows with world leaders and meet movie stars!

Would you want to see your career head from President at $450,000 a year,to unemployed and on welfare?

The Indian Act is good for Native Politicians, and good for socialist politicians who like to raise a fuss occasionally about "the plight of the Natives on "fill-in-the-blank" Reserve.

Don't worry, the usual suspects will piss away a few million on this Rez,maybe some well-connected contractor will build 'em all nice new houses.

And after the ball is over, the houses will be trashed within two years, and the Chiefs will go back to their questionable accounting practices, and the world will carry on as usual, until next time Charlie Angus needs some positive publicity.

It's enough to make a guy cynical.

anybody know how much money the attawapiskat chief is pulling down?

by way of comparison...

"Consider a recent news story out of Alberta."

"According to information leaked to the Edmonton Journal the chief and councillors of the 360-member Horse Lake Indian band in Alberta make superstar salaries."

"The chief took home $439,425 in tax-free salary last year (the equivalent of a $700,000 fully-taxable income). Two other councillors were paid just slightly less at $414,500, while the band's Director of Special Projects pocketed $435,000."

"To put it in perspective, the Premier of Alberta earned a taxable salary of $121,000 last year and the Prime Minister of our country earned a 'mere' $144,000."

who's zoomin' who, huh?

Agreed...but like I said, one step at a time. Bypass the native 'government' by dealing directly with the people most in need, solve the immediate problems, THEN point at the results and challenge anyone to come up with a different explanation than the obvious one.

As for the Chief herself, I don't know how much she makes...but I would sure love to see a picture of *her* house (and those of her friends and family).

just saw on the news tonight... the previously-appointed government financial advisor to the band... is the chief's common-law husband.

apparently the whole system, from top to bottom is thoroughly compromised.
