Rules to live by

"All bodily fluids, solids and toilet paper must be disposed of down the toilet."

"While I appreciate that the TIC population is multi-cultural and different countries have different practices, here in the UK the accepted practice is to use only the WC."

"Given the incidence of people pooing in bins, showers and the likes, can I please remind all Strathclyde University Technology and Innovation Centre occupants that the toilets have been provided for that specific purpose."
Alrighty! Good to know.

Not every sanitation system tolerates the introduction of paper products. It's the rare public women's washroom which doesn't have a small bin of some sort for "sanitary products". And, while travelling on a "crocodile and turtles" tour in Oaxaca, Mexico, we found one facility where we were instructed to deposit the toilet paper in a lined bin.

Rather suspect a lot of septic system problems here in Canada are caused by the excess of TP, etc.

uh, frances... read slower... the problem here is that people are shitting in the showers, in garbage bins and other random locations. in fact, anywhere but the toilet.

and fwiw, our 30 year old septic system, which we pump out religiously every three years, runs like a fine swiss watch.

Neo - your point granted. However, there was some discussion in the article and comments about the disposal of used toilet paper, and I was responding to that. We are on mains water and sewage, but have friends in the country who have problems at fairly regular intervals.

as is strathclyde university i'm sure.

not to be intentionally crude, but the issue here isn't used toilet paper... in fact, the folk causing the problem here don't, as a rule use tp.
