In 1996, Jean Chretien...

...got Ahmed Khadr sprung from a Pakistani prison... now Justin Trudeau just made his terrorist son a multi-millionaire...insert alt text here

"The Trudeau government has quietly paid a $10.5-million settlement to Omar Khadr in a move that circumvents legal efforts by two Americans to prevent him from receiving compensation. The office of Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale would not confirm whether the money was paid to Mr. Khadr or say when an official apology and compensation package would be announced."
**********

FROM THE COMMENTS: Why did Justin just roll over?
"Liberal governments of Chretien and Martin had about 4 years to do whatever they thought fair for Khadr when in power. Only after 2006 did the "child soldier" line make an appearance, and Irwin Cottler was Justice Minister under Paul Martin."
And...
"Trudeau has no money to save Canadians from beheading in the Philippines but will give 10.5 million to a convicted terrorist. Only in Liberal Canada."
**********

RELATED: Major irony alert
Khadr was 15 at the time of the criminal acts of which he was convicted. According to accepted Islamic practice, he was by no means a child.
As Canadian as an IED...
"1996 - The Khadrs return to Canada, but patriarch Ahmed Khadr forms his own humanitarian relief group and goes back to Pakistan. The family moves to Jalalabad, under Taliban control, and lives in Osama bin Laden’s compound."
**********

LAST WORD: Those cowardly fucks...
"No naming of Khadr. No mention of the dollar sum. No reference to the apology. No commiserating remarks for Tabitha Speer, the wife of the dead American medic."
And Justin Trudeau, of course, is conveniently out of the country when the Liberals leak the story to CTV.

But he did make the astonishing claim that it can all be laid at the feet of Stephen Harper! (just now his concluding sentence in a news conference)
Time lines for the sorry Khadr family saga begin way back in the 90s as you state; all mileposts including the actions of CSIS officials occurred when which regime was in power?
Liberal governments of Chretien and Martin had about 4 years to do whatever they though fair for Khadr when in power. Only after 2006 did the "child soldier" line make an appearance, and Irwin Cottler was Justice Minister under Paul Martin.
It is just impossible to make the optics of this decision worse, but Jr is basking in reflected glory today in Germany. The press there should hound him unmercifully over this action, but I wouldn't count on it.

hence the behind closed doors payola, as a court case would have highlighted the liberal party's position on khadr back then.

Also, all of this strangely coincides with the little potato being on another continent and so safely removed from the furor.

If Khadr is sorry and trying to change why does he have a fiancee who is a radical lawyer passionate about Palestinian causes and burka women not wanting to show their faces for a Canadian passport photo?

"anon asks... If Khadr is sorry and trying to change..."

or trying to repudiate his sworn testimony from his trial.

Truedough had options - there was a $134 million wrongful death judgment against Khadr that a Utah civil court awarded Khadr's victims in 2015 that was grinding through the Canadian courts. Dopey could have let that proceed for enforcement in Canada to get the tax payer off the hook - or he could have spent $5 mil to beat it in court saving us $5.5 mil (It WAS beatable).

But when the US lawyers for the victims filed an emergency injunction to stop payment to khadr pending enforcement of the victim's judgement, Truedough took advantage of a technical loop hole in the injunction filing to secretly settle with Khadr, before the victim's lawyers could properly refile an injunction.

Truedough PLANNED this - and all his "there was nothing I could do" BS is just so much cowardly dodging responsibility for this abomination and his integral part in making it happen.
