Coming soon to a neighbourhood near you

Canada's aging & increasingly infirm population will only further stress a precariously situated system that presently consumes over half of all our tax dollars... and, is indeed... perched on the knife edge of total implosion...

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice McLachlin said that addicts are extremely sick individuals whose urgent need frequently leads to them to inject drugs with dirty needles after dissolving narcotics in dirty puddle water.

She noted that the geographically small area is home to 4,600 intravenous drug users whose addiction means that their lives are constantly on the line.
Unlike, say... our courageous soldiers... these folks have chosen to "put their lives constantly on the line" in reckless, uncaring, single-minded pursuit of self-gratification.

And it's easy to see what's at the bottom of this slippery slope...
Ms. Bird, 54, is president of the Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society, a group dedicated to improving the quality of life for native people who use illicit drugs. She said she smokes crack every day and would use an inhalation room if one were to open.
Yeah... I bet she would. These folks spent a little less time glued to their glass pipes, their kids might not be screwed from day 1...
"42 per cent of aboriginal children under 14 live with either a lone parent, grandparent or relative. Only 58 per cent live with two parents, compared to 82 per cent in the non-native population."
Hey, how about forming a group of people who improve the quality of life... for aboriginal children? Forgive me... I guess that'd cut into somebody's daily inhalation schedule.

So, my question is... given the desperate & steadily worsening state of our healthcare system... how about we do a little triage and dedicate scant, disappearing resources... towards people who actually give a shit whether they live or die?

We take care of that... all the money that's left over can go to shiny new needles, crackpipes and medically supervised spikin', snortin' & smokin'.

Anybody?

-- LONDON, Ont. -- Police have charged a 26-year-old man over an apparent racial incident in which a banana was thrown on the ice while a black player was taking part in a shootout during an NHL pre-season game.

The banana was thrown from the stands as Philadelphia's Wayne Simmonds — who is black — was skating towards Detroit goalie Jordan Pearce in the shootout before 7,427 at the 9,090-seat John Labatt Centre.
Okay... accepting the premise that this particular stone dumbass brought this specific piece of fruit to the arena on the off chance that he'd get to taunt this one individual... how exactly, is it... that Mr Simmonds isn't being held to the same standard of conduct?
On Monday, Simmonds landed in hot water for an alleged homophobic slur to New York Rangers' agitator Sean Avery during an exhibition game in Philadelphia.

The NHL held a hearing with Simmonds on Tuesday but chose not to discipline him because it felt there wasn't sufficient evidence to do so.
Sorry folks... stop me if you've heard it before... "One people, one law."

Obama goes for the trifecta...
-- WASHINGTON (WLS) -- The Energy Department on Wednesday approved two loan guarantees worth more than $1 billion for solar energy projects in Nevada and Arizona, two days before the expiration date of a program that has become a rallying cry for Republican critics of the Obama administration's green energy program.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the department has completed a $737 million loan guarantee to Tonopah Solar Energy for a 110 megawatt solar tower on federal land near Tonopah, Nev., and a $337 million guarantee for Mesquite Solar 1 to develop a 150 megawatt solar plant near Phoenix.

The loans were approved under the same program that paid for a $528 million loan to Solyndra Inc., a California solar panel maker that went bankrupt after receiving the money and laid off 1,100 workers. Solyndra is under investigation by the FBI and is the focal point of House hearings on the program

At 19, Pierre-Luc Dusseault made history in May by becoming Canada’s youngest-ever MP; instead of working at a golf course this summer as he’d planned, his first full-time job was representative for Sherbrooke.
Let's face it, Quebec... it IS funny.

The NDP dumps placeholder candidates into as many ridings as possible, so they can hoover up that per-vote subsidy.

Then... you lunkheads actually vote a bunch of them in... not because you believe in this perennially last-place party... but because you got suckered by a terminally-ill slickster who, as his last wish, longed desperately to poke a thumb in Stephen Harper's eye.

So when you see Dalton McGuinty...

Look what happened south of the border with the Car-Salesman in Chief...

"We have incurred significant net losses since our inception, including a net loss of $114.1 million in 2007, $232.1 million in 2008 and $119.8 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2009, and we had an accumulated deficit of $505 million at Oct. 3, 2009," the company said in a December 2009 filing to the SEC.

"We expect to continue to incur significant operating and net losses and negative cash flow from operations for the foreseeable future."
And it gets even better. Even after the Whitehouse knew Solyndra was going down the shitter... all they cared about was how it was going to affect the re-election campaign.
Newly released emails show the White House was worried about the likely effect of a default by Solyndra on Obama's re-election campaign."The optics of a Solyndra default will be bad," an OMB official wrote in a Jan. 31 email to a colleague. "The timing will likely coincide with the 2012 campaign season heating up."
That's simply how politics works.

Hmmm... if only we had some sort of measuring stick... something to compare to... wait a minute...
Between January 2006 and September 2010, Jean made 251 trips and accumulated more than 1,048 hours of flight. The bill for travel expenses totalled $2.7 million.

"This has been a difficult time for New Democrats everywhere, with the incredible loss of our leader, Jack Layton. It’s up to us now. In just a few short weeks, we have an opportunity to meet Jack’s challenge."
If Jack is this guy's leader... who exactly is Andrea Horwath?

I swear, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to hear they're door-stepping Layton relics or orange holy water.

-- TORONTO -- Premier Dalton McGuinty has the second-worst fiscal record of Canada's 10 provincial premiers, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute.

The Ontario leader finished in ninth place, just in front of Prince Edward Island's Robert Ghiz.

UPDATE: The Empire Strikes Back

And after almost a decade... he still blames Mike Harris...
“We know how to deal with deficits, we inherited a $5.6 billion one from the last guys,” McGuinty said.
Of course, that doesn't explain this balance sheet...
Still, McGuinty’s administration registered a $19.3-billion shortfall in 2009-10, the highest on record.

A Tale of Two Stories

As everybody knows... a good headline sets the tone for the whole article. A skillful writer can have folks leaning this way, or that, before they even finish that first paragraph.

The first headline here is a classic. Despite using the word "flirted"... it still manages to confer a certain gravitas and, more importantly... states one thing while implying exactly the opposite.
halls of macadamia/The obvious takeaway here is that this man is a loose cannon, a candidate for blackmail... and thus a danger to his country.

How exactly do you respond to this kind of thing?

"Bob Dechert says voters will dismiss a report that he wrote flirtatious emails as a non-issue, because there was 'no wrongdoing' in the incident, for which the parliamentary secretary was not arrested or charged."
Yeah, yeah, I know how weak that sounds... and in fact, Bob Dechert actually said nothing of the sort... but, then again, maybe he should have.

'Cos... you've got a glib excuse and a sympathetic media following... forget all about those triad pimps... you can get almost any headline you desire...
halls of macadamia/
"Jack Layton says voters will dismiss a report that he was once found in a massage parlour by police in 1996 as a non-issue, because there was 'no wrongdoing' in the incident, for which the NDP leader was not arrested or charged."
I dunno... I suppose we should all be used to men in positions of power tripping all over their erections... and flirty emails and sketchy late-night shiatsu are probably the tip of the iceberg.

But don't you find it interesting how these two less-than-seemly tales are portrayed as near-reciprocals of each other in the media?

I'm almost ready to go pitch CBC on a new reality show... "SURVIVOR: Byward Market".

Last week, La Presse columnist Patrick Lagacé didn’t mince words: “Mr. Layton ran for the highest office knowing that the crab was gnawing at his bones. We should have been told. This would have changed the vote of thousands of people, that’s clear."

Yes, of course Greg... if only the average man on the street was as smart as, oh, I dunno... a Fiberal party pooh-bah.

Not that I can't see the reasoning here.

A while ago, I heard that 52% of Torontonians self-identify as being members of a visible minority. Obviously, Greg & company feel that those votes are for sale... and have acted accordingly.

I don't think that's gonna work. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that perhaps not all Ontarians (whatever their ethnic origin) are on board with the Liberals politically-correct system of quotas and taxpayer-subsidised "affirmative action" plans.
After six days of defending the $10,000-credit program without providing details beyond the vague promise in its campaign literature the Liberals had campaign co-chair Greg Sorbara outline exactly who would qualify for the grants the $12-million a year program.
I think Ontarians... and indeed, most Canadians still believe in a meritocracy... where people earn their rewards.

I think most people are smart enough to realise that all of this valuta ultimately comes out of their own pockets.

And even with all those hundreds of millions of taxpayer greenbacks... how well exactly, did that work out for... prominent Obama fundraiser... George Kaiser?
