Yup... an exciting new paradigm...

...cyber riots...

Police said the gang members are part of a group of more than 1,000 youths who have used social media sites like Facebook to plan unruly gatherings on the beach on three of the past four nights.

The beach falls under the jurisdiction of the State Police, who have been unable to prevent the violence.
And it isn't just Boston that's being torn apart...
"It has nothing to do with racism," said Sosa, who lives in South Beach. "It's a lack of respect for the city they're visiting. It's as simple as that. This morning, there were six cars parked on my block with their mirrors ripped off, their antennas ripped off.

It shows our city as nothing short of a warzone - Filthy streets, a drive by shooting, multiple cars crashed in the process, and total chaos on the streets.
And hello, Rochester...
Many people were at the beach to attend the city-organized Rib Festival. Those already at the festival Monday were allowed to stay in the fenced in area.

This isn't the first time a local venue has shut down because of fights on Memorial Day. Seabreeze made it a policy to close on Memorial Day starting last year after rumors of violence. The city has an ongoing issue with crowds of youth at the Liberty Pole downtown.

"I think what you saw at the beach is what we’ve been seeing in many of our neighborhoods for two decades," said Councilman Adam Mcfadden. "It’s just that you had a lot of people there who are not used to that culture and got to witness it personally."
Hmmm... North Carolina...
Investigators say Antwan Terrell Smith was shot and killed after someone pulled a gun just after 1 a.m. during a large fight on 3rd Street. Durante Kavon James was shot in the leg.

It was one of several fights that broke out after the Speed Street celebration in Uptown. CMPD called out its Civil Emergency Unit after reporting that many large groups of people were disobeying police, flashing gang signs, blocking traffic and fighting.

In all, 70 people were arrested - including 15 juveniles. Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct, fighting, assault, and impeding traffic.
Memorial Day... it ain't what it used to be.

A failure to communicate

It’s a fundamental part of the Airbus philosophy about automation that pilots should not be able to assert individual control outside of a defined envelope that guarantees the stability of the airplane.

As long as the autopilot and engine auto-thrust are engaged, the computers inhibit pilots from superseding the commands of the system.

Boeing, in contrast, within its own version of a fully automated flight deck, has a system that allows pilots to intervene at any moment when they feel it necessary.

-- CALGARY -- On Thursday, May 12th, RCMP in Fort McMurray arrested 26-year-old Ahmed Mohamed of Brooks, Alberta on unrelated drug and weapons charges.

After speaking with Mohamed, police have now charged him with second-degree murder in connection to Worku’s death.
Hang on... rednecks, Alberta, rampant homicides... that sounds so familiar.

And looky here... the Car Salesman-in-Chief has just redefined the phrase "Old Age Security"...

If Congress does not vote by Aug. 2 to raise the debt limit, Geithner says the government is likely to default on some of its obligations, which he says would cause enormous economic harm and the suspension of government services, including the disbursal of Social Security funds.

But, but, but...

...he's just so McDreamy...

When President Barack Obama took office, in 2009, he championed the cause of government transparency, and spoke admiringly of whistle-blowers, whom he described as “often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government.” But the Obama Administration has pursued leak prosecutions with a surprising relentlessness.

Including the Drake case, it has been using the Espionage Act to press criminal charges in five alleged instances of national-security leaks — more such prosecutions than have occurred in all previous Administrations combined.
Funny how that works, huh?

I'm no mathematician... but let's try calculate the odds of Stephen Harper being -- (a) -- found butt-nekkid in a triad-run bawdy house... or -- (b) -- arrested for sexually assaulting a a maid in a ritzy hotel.

Even the lunatic left-leaning Huffpo, can't resist piling on...

For demolishing the Socialists' claim to speak for the common Frenchman and woman, it's hard to beat an accusation of the entitled Socialist standard bearer imperiously attempting to rape a chambermaid in a $3,000 luxury hotel room and then trying to skip town.
Yeee...ouch.

Tristane Banon previously described the attack, which happened when she was in her early 20s, in a television programme in 2007, when she called Strauss-Kahn, whose name was bleeped out, a "rutting chimpanzee."

She says she consulted a lawyer at the time, but was persuaded not to take action by her mother, a regional councillor in the Socialist party and friend of the Strauss-Kahn family. Banon is goddaughter to Strauss-Kahn's second wife.

So... with Blogger being down...

...the last 24 hours, I decided it was time to venture... once again... into the wonderful world of home repair. We've been having some off & on water pressure issues lately... and the last couple of days the H2O was actually shutting itself off.

Now, for all you big city folk, this would simply entail ringing up city hall and telling them to suss things out... with a well, it's... well... a little more complicated... and if you call in a plumber... a lot more expensive.

I had actually gone out and purchased a new pressure tank a little while ago... our old tank is probably 20 years old, a little grungy at the tee... and it sits way down on the basement floor. I figured I'd replace the tank, the pressure switch & gauge... and fab up a table at waist-level to avoid that hands & knees deal. It's a little awkward to get down and read that gauge, or reset the switch... and in another ten years, it'll be downright painful.

Anyway, this pressure thing forced my hand... and I spent an hour yesterday removing & installing a new switch & gauge. Wanted to see if it was just the bits causing trouble... or whether the tank itself had failed.

Here's what I found...

You can see that the tube on the bottom of the pressure switch is completed occluded with, well... I don't even wanna think about it. The gauge is similarly baffed and stuck on 60 psi.

Swapped in the new pressure switch... which also now has a built-in low pressure trip that shuts off the pump if pressure drops below 20 psi. Nice to have if you blow a washing machine hose... or have a pipe freeze & burst.

And it's always nice to have a working pressure gauge...

I also had to air up the bladder in the old tank... it'll hold long enough for me to throw together a platform for the new tank. I actually splurged and bought a new brass tee as well.

Once all this stuff is in... it'll mean I've bullet-proofed the in-house components... which means the only other possible problem I will have in the forseeable future is the submersible pump itself.

A pretty simple operation overall... certainly a lot less drama & frustration than my last few forays into home maintenance.

In what police called a “double drive-by” — the two cars involved were both moving at the time — shots were fired from one moving vehicle into the other near the intersection of Gosford Blvd. and Secroft Cres.
No need to be alarmed though, folks... looks like the world-famous Inspector Clouseau Crime Unit is on the job...
Staff Sgt. Lamond would not speculate about the cause of the shooting, but said, “it doesn’t seem like innocent bystanders."
Uh yeah, Sarge... that's certainly a very good place to start.

A Brief History of Courage

I don’t have much positive to say about motor neuron disease. But it taught me not to pity myself, because others were worse off and to get on with what I still could do. I’m happier now than before I developed the condition.

I am lucky to be working in theoretical physics, one of the few areas in which disability is not a serious handicap.

The New Separatistes

Now that the Dippers are a Quebec-based party... Jack has to sing for his supper...

NDP Leader Jack Layton promised Quebecers, during a weekend appearance on a popular talk show, that he would immediately try to apply the principles of Quebec's language laws to federally regulated industries.

Some political observers warn that bill would actually change little in Quebec - and, despite accomplishing little, would only serve to open the Pandora's Box of language disputes.
Who's the big, bad "wedge-issuer" now, huh? I mean, that's what this is, right?

In a majority government situation, Jack and the NDP have a better chance... (not to mention more of an interest)... in legalising prostitution... than passing this divisive private member's bill.

While the NDP finds itself swamped with résumés for those 300 or so jobs, an equal number of staffers – largely from the Bloc Québécois and the Liberals – are suddenly out of work.

Unlike other parties that allow MPs to hire and fire staff largely at will, NDP staffers are unionized, meaning jobs must first be offered internally and decisions can be challenged.
Hmmm... does that mean we're gonna see NDP staffers regularly going out on strike?

And, say goodbye to the meritocracy...
The NDP describes itself as an employment equity employer. That means “women, persons of colour, aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons are encouraged to apply.”

In the 2008 election, the Greens attracted 937,000 votes, an increase of 237,000 over the previous election.

Last Monday they gave it all back, and more, dropping to 576,000 votes. That’s less than they polled in 2006 or 2004, under then-leader Jim Harris.

You have to go back to 2000 to find a worse result.
So much for the "big picture", huh?

Perhaps he's not as McSlippery...

...as he thinks...

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the New Democrats and the Progressive Conservatives have all called on McGuinty to apologize for the secret law his government passed regarding police powers during the G20 weekend.
Ever notice how Stephen Harper takes all the heat in the media for being an evil, controlling dictator?

Here we have a case of Dalton McGuinty secretly ramping up police powers... then unbelievably... trying to pass the buck to the Prime Minister.

The icing on the cake is that he gets caught in the act... then, in effect... tells the people of Ontario to go piss up a rope.
"Harper didn't pass a secret G20 law, the McGuinty government did," said Opposition justice critic Garfield Dunlop. "People were charged and they were put in jail and they knew nothing really about what they were doing wrong."

Unlike the NDP and civil liberties groups, the Tories don't want a public inquiry into the G20, but they do want McGuinty to say he's sorry for the secret law.

"He owes an apology. It's that simple," said Dunlop. "We're not asking for a huge, expensive inquiry. We're asking for an apology."
Let's see what kind of legs this thing has.

I'm willing to bet... not nearly as much as any of the media-manufactured Conservative-targeted "scandals" that hit the airwaves daily.

RELATED: Understanding Pakistan...

...the short answer is... you won't...
So how is the army both at war with al Qaeda and in bed with it?

The answer is the army is riddled with jihadist sympathizers. For decades, the officer corps has been told India is the enemy, America is unreliable and rapacious, and that Islam is the answer.

Even those officers who appreciate American support (the country has received billions in aid since 9/11) resent it too. Like all Pakistanis they also believe America is closer in values and interests to India.

They are right.

(Reuters) - The Taliban released a video on Sunday of a Canadian man captured this year in a volatile province of central Afghanistan.

Kidnapping has become a lucrative business in Afghanistan in recent years, as part of the Taliban-led insurgency but also by criminal groups with largely financial motives.

Two French television journalists were kidnapped by the Taliban northeast of Kabul more than a year ago and are still being held. A Dutch aid worker and his Afghan driver, abducted in Afghanistan's north last October, were freed in December.

In her first interview since getting elected, the elusive New Democrat who made headlines for going to Las Vegas during the campaign admits she's never stepped foot in her riding but says she is looking forward to visiting soon.

In a halting phone interview conducted almost entirely in English, Ms. Brosseau sounds nervous and at one point takes more than 20 seconds to answer a question while papers are heard being shuffled.

She said she has learned a lot over the week during meetings with other party members and leader Jack Layton... and her “skin is getting thicker by the day.”

NDP officials continue to shield her from the national media and The Canadian Press was denied an interview with her again Saturday.

Liberal candidate Francine Gaudet said a formal complaint has been made with Elections Canada by a voter in the riding alleging there are at least 90 invalid signatures on the elected NDP candidate's nomination papers.

Ms. Gaudet explained in an interview that when voters were asked to endorse the NDP candidate’s nomination papers, her name did not appear on the voter consent nomination form.

She was nowhere to be seen during the election campaign and newly elected MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau remained incommunicado Thursday as the NDP put her through intensive language training before she faces public scrutiny.

Ms. Brosseau never went to the Berthier-Maskinongé riding to meet voters during the campaign. She had no campaign workers, no campaign headquarters, no money. She simply placed her name on the ballot and won.
Wow... what's the odds on pulling that off, huh? That's gotta be a one in a mill... c'est what?!?
And she wasn’t the only NDP candidate to coast to victory with no campaigning.

Mylène Freeman, a 22-year-old McGill University political science student, was elected in Argenteuil-Papineau Mirabel, northwest of Montreal.

She also was never in the riding, because she didn’t expect to win, preferring instead to help the campaign of NDP Quebec lieutenant Tom Mulcair, who was running in Montreal.
Oh, Quebec... what have you done to yourselves?
