Every time I drive into Toronto...

...I start to white-knuckle it at about Oshawa... and now I know why...

According to a study released Tuesday by Allstate Insurance Co., the Greater Toronto Area had the highest rate of car crashes per capita in Ontario in the past three years.

GTA communities Thornhill, Ajax, Maple, Brampton and Bolton, which made up the bottom five communities with the highest crash rates, had between 5.9 and 6.6 collision claims per 100 vehicles.

The GTA community of Brampton wasn't far behind, with a 35% increase in crash claims.

I agree with the white knuckle scenario.

Perhaps Miller should close down all the race tracks in town to cut down on traffic accidents a la shutting down target ranges to curb murder.

Guess why? Immigrants that come here and before they can even speak english they have a car on the road etc., etc. (real conservative)

so, r.c. - you have statistics on that, right?

or, is it just your personal feeling... you know... like phil jones at cru?

Actually, RC, Thank God for the immigrants, the rich ones, that is.
Last Saturday, the showroom at Steeles/Vic sold 73 Lexus in one day, mostly to Chinese and Indian immigrants.
The Chinese and the Indian immigrants are keeping our economy afloat - and don't you forget it.
They are not moochers and you will rarely see them on the govt's teats. That factor alone, makes me a fan.

1. MariaS: this might be the first time I agree with you.
2. Rich: Do you ever wish that the Harris government didn't sell the highway (99 year lease)?
3. Neo Conservative: I hate driving to and from the city for that very reason. I'm surprised sometimes that there aren't more accidents. Though I believe there are more car-related deaths than gun-related deaths.
4. I think one solution would be more public transit, and high speed trains. What do you think?

it'd be nice if public transit could pay for itself.

heard yesterday... the new 2.6 billion dollar vaughn subway extension has gone up 110 million dollars and they haven't even put a shovel in the ground.

My understanding was that the high speed trains in Europe were fast... and full. If you could get between Montreal and Toronto in 2 hours... and had similar trains between Toronto/Chicago, Montreal/New York etc... I'm sure they would do well.

But I suspect that much of the "paying for itself" would go unnoticed. I think when you factor in savings (from more highway construction/repairs, more car accidents, etc) public transit more than pays for itself.

I realize I'm conflating public transit and intercity transit... maybe I should have just said "trains"...
