The Dutch government extends Afghanistan commitment until 2010.

-- THE HAGUE -- The Netherlands is extending its military mission in the Afghan province of Uruzgan to August 2010. After that, the mission will be wound down, with the last man to leave by 1 December 2010.
Much like Steffi and Taliban Jack, the Dutch opposition has decided to have it's own little tea party.
The Socialist Party (SP), leftwing Greens (GroenLinks) and centre-left (D66) will likely be the only parties to vote against an extension. They are holding separate hearings on 6 December with opponents of the military presence in Afghanistan.

Christian democratic (CDA) MP Karien van Gennip termed the alternative hearings "unfortunate." Conservative (VVD) MP Hans van Baalen found them "childish."

Are you really saying Stephen Harper is responsible for the recent explosive rise in HIV-AIDS infections?

-- CP -- Dr. Julio Montaner, president-elect of the International AIDS Society and director of the B.C. Apparently, personal responsibility isn't a very big part of the equation anymore.

"Coca-Cola sells because every six months they reinvent themselves," Montaner noted. "What about our safer sex campaigns? Hello! First, they are not there. Second, they are boring."

Initially city officials considered basing the whole grade on a peer-group comparison. But Kati Haycock, director of the Education Trust, a Washington research group, warned them off, saying that would send the message that there were different standards for children of different backgrounds.

“We argued as strongly as we could that that’s a terrible idea,” Ms. Haycock said. “In the real world, once kids grow up, they are not just compared to kids that just graduated from the barrio.”
An interesting article, especially when considered in light of the Toronto District Board's recent initiative to explore "race based" schooling.

There are, however, still a few bugs in the system.
The decision to reward schools for advancing the neediest students produced some counterintuitive results. South Bronx Academy for Applied Media, listed by the state as one of its most violent schools, is rated by the city as an A.

It fared well on the report card because while just 17 percent of its students met grade level standards on the state reading test, more than 63 percent had improved from last year.

No sense, no pain

Fresh off his disastrous "No gun, No Funeral" debacle... newly demoted ex-Attorney General Michael "Sisyphus" Bryant has now been condemned by the Emperor McSlippery, to ceaselessly roll the insurmountable rock of aboriginal demands to the top of the Caledonian mountain.

And you don't have to be a student of the classics to know that, so far... this particular boulder just keeps on rolling back down the consultant-littered hill.

"I want to hear from people," the minister told The Spectator in an exclusive interview. " I certainly don't think that the local problems are going to be solved from Queen's Park."
Yeah, no kidding, huh Mikey? I think your predecessor David Ramsay, over the last couple of years, has proved that thesis pretty thoroughly.

So what do the citizens of Caledonia have to say?
Nolda Hoekert, 52, and her son J.J., 24, were surprised when the minister joined them at their table in the Tim Hortons.

They told him the government has to resolve the dispute, and they also want him to do something about "two-tier justice" -- the belief natives and non-natives are being treated differently by the OPP.
This has been the biggest hurdle in the process to date... so we're not exactly talking startling revelation here.

The less-than-elegant McGuinty brokered solution, thus far, has consisted mostly of Liberal politicians... bending over and grabbing their ankles.

But, to his credit, Bryant at least has the balls to show up and take some of the fiberal-generated heat.
Premier Dalton McGuinty had been under fire for not visiting Caledonia. Bryant's predecessor David Ramsay also did not visit, although Conservative leader John Tory made more than half a dozen visits.

Too many rules says Chretien

And what's up, with that... "making people accountable"... for their actions?

"I know some cabinet ministers are complaining today that they are not getting the type of people in their office because of these restricting rules.

You know, we should have the best people we can get to do these jobs and these rules are keeping a lot of good people away from the Hill," said Mr. Chretien in an interview with CanWest News Service.

Under prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin, Liberal-friendly firms were repeatedly accused of trading on their connections to the government to win lucrative consulting work.
Well, Jean... how can I explain this? A government job isn't supposed to be on the job training for greedy, uber-ambitious would-be lobbyists and political power brokers.

It's supposed to be about public service.

My prediction here, is that Steffi will grow to rue the day he first uttered the name... Karlheinz Schreiber...

Author William Kaplan, an expert on the Brian Mulroney-Karlheinz Schreiber affair, predicts upcoming hearings by a parliamentary committee will be a "gong show."

"He's not going to tell anybody anything until the minister of justice informs the government of Germany that Karlheinz Schreiber, Canadian citizen, will not be returned to Germany", the lawyer and author of two books on the controversy told CTV's Question Period on Sunday.
Most people seem to be overlooking the fact that Schreiber has no alliances or loyalties here... only people, on both sides of the political bus... that he tried to suborn.

That fact appears to be slowly sinking in... even with the previously enthusiastic fiberal cheerleading squad.
Liberal MP Robert Thibault said his party supports a public inquiry, wants Schreiber available for it and wants it to review the Schreiber-Mulroney relationship back to 1980 plus the actions of the current Conservative government.

Toronto homicide detectives are investigating three murders that took place around the city within hours of each other Friday, each with outstanding suspects.

Uh huh... sure... the police... that's who you should be worried about.

UPDATE: Bad boys, bad boys... whatcha gonna do...
Two men immersed in “criminal, high-risk lifestyles” are dead in tit-for-tat slayings and cops are urging their friends to leave the body count where it stands.

Police say Ryan Hyde, 19, was waiting in the front seat of his car for a slice of pizza when Kennado Walker, 25, sneaked up and shot him from behind on Friday afternoon.

Before the evening was through, someone bent on revenge caught Walker unaware after he parked his car underground at 5600 Sheppard Ave. E. and shot him in the head.

Both men were known to cops and dealt in drugs and guns, Gallant said. Like Hyde, Walker wasn’t working or attending school when he died.

Hamas stupefied by suggestion... of non-violent solution.

-- GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Hamas said Saturday it was shocked by the Arab states' decision to attend a Mideast peace conference in the U.S. on Monday and it underlined its opposition to talks by warning that it could soon launch a more lethal type of rocket into Israel than seen previously.
Who are these people... and exactly what planet did they come from?

"Participation opens doors for normalization of relations with the Israeli occupiers."

Remember lead water pipes?

It's looking more and more like fluoridation may be another man-made disaster...

Nearly a half-century after water fluoridation became widespread, a small but growing number of medical officials and environmentalists are again raising concerns over the practice.

Recent research is suggesting that fluoride may be connected to a number of serious conditions, including the development in teenage boys of osteosarcoma, the rare bone cancer that killed Canadian icon Terry Fox, reduced intelligence levels in children, and impaired thyroid function.
We've been on well water out here in the sticks since 2001, when my son turned five... and that turns out, statistically, to have been a pretty good thing.
Researchers found that boys aged 6 to 8 who were exposed to more fluoridated water were about four times more likely to develop the cancer than those exposed to lower levels. The researchers called their results "remarkably robust."

Fluoridation is based on research from the 1940s, and Mr. Wiles contends that it wouldn't be able to pass a modern risk assessment used for drugs or pesticides.

"We took a look at the science and it was really apparent to us that the current levels of fluoride exposure were unsafe," he said.
Funny though... it looks as though some people have been aware of this for some time.
Toronto's drinking water, after several reductions, now contains half the fluoride it did before 1999, while the province of Quebec cut the recommended amount by 42 per cent in 2004.

David Miller's Dodge City

Oops, they did it again... the bullets are flyin' in Toronto the Good.

A man has died from his injuries after an east-end shootout that may have involved as many as six people.

Witnesses told police two groups of people opened fire on each other on the street near Birchmount Road and Sheppard Avenue at about 1:20 p.m. on Friday.
Latest reports are not identifying the victim... but say it was a 19 year-old male.

**********

RELATED: Apparently, that code of silence thing...

Makes for a pretty good defence.
A teenager accused of gunning down Jason Huxtable stood stunned and speechless while the victim’s mother wept as a jury acquitted him yesterday of second-degree murder.

The now 17-year-old - who testified he was an innocent witness - wouldn’t identify the culprit who fatally shot the 18-year-old Huxtable outside a Jane St. and Sheppard Ave. W. townhouse complex on Aug. 30, 2005.

The teen testified that he feared reprisals against his friends and family so he refused to divulge the identities of Huxtable’s killers. The teen’s best friend and his father were shot in the months after Huxtable’s death, court heard.

The most recent came with the stabbing death of a man found in an O'Connor Dr. apartment building around 10 p.m., Toronto police Staff-Sgt. Chuck Konkel said Saturday morning.

A 25-year-old man was found shot to death in an east-end underground parking garage around 8:15 p.m.

Potty training the loony left

After nine days of crippling national transportation strikes France appeared to be returning to normal Friday amid negotiations between labor unions and government officials.

From Paris, Lisa Bryant reports that while the walkout has snarled traffic, angered commuters and cost the country millions of dollars there appears to be one winner: French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Just a heads up here, Mark...

A self-proclaimed socially progressive person... might not actually want to base his "life philosophy" on the musings of Groucho Marx...

Mr. Warner said he hasn't ripped up his Conservative membership, but hinted that it's not likely he will be staying. "My philosophy in life is not to want to belong to any club that wouldn't have me as a member."

"It's just the way I approach life."
Well Mark, you deep thinker... the actual quote is, "would have me as a member"... but that's what happens when you pull a life philosophy out of the pop culture ether.

Cute mis-quotation... but remember, Marx also famously recounted...
I did a bond tour during the Second World War. We were raising money, and we played Boston and Philadelphia and most of the big cities. And we got to Minneapolis.

There wasn't any big theater to play there, so we did our show in a railroad station. Then I told the audience, that I knew a girl in Minneapolis. She was also known in St. Paul, she used to come over to visit me.

She was known as "The Tail Of Two Cities."
Try that one out at your next Fiberal or NDP fundraiser and... I daresay... Libby Davies will happily rip off your balls.

China takes pity...

The Chinese government has given no explanation for why it suddenly refused and then later allowed a United States naval carrier group to dock in Hong Kong as scheduled.

China made an abrupt about-face, Thursday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Beijing would allow the ships into Hong Kong after all.

"We have already decided to allow the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier group to stay in Hong Kong for rest and reorganization during Thanksgiving."

"It is based completely on humanitarianism."

-- Q -- What's flat, black and glows in the dark?

-- A -- Well, if nobody puts the brakes on Madman Ahmadinejad... that'd be Tehran...

And, it seems, Iranians in high places are starting to get it.

The attack would be difficult to imagine without at least tacit support from Ayatollah Khamenei.

In a hard-hitting editorial on Wednesday, the Tehran paper said the president's treatment of his critics was immoral, illogical and illegal.
In an autocratic theocracy like Iran, where every piece of news is filtered through the ruling elite... that's a very public slap in the face.
Such a direct personal attack against President Ahmadinejad is indeed rare in official media in Iran.

It shows that the Iranian president is not only losing support among ordinary people because of economic hardship, he is also angering part of the establishment for using the nuclear issue to bolster his personal power.
This one is worth watching.

The designation would protect the massive swath of the boreal forest from diamond and uranium mining in the region that threatens to encroach on the area, would ban sales and leases of property and put new limits on hunting in the area.

Investigators from Ms Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party said yesterday they believed the bomb, which killed 170 people and left hundreds more wounded, was strapped to a one-year-old child carried by its jihadist father.
Well... I guess if this was truly the "Will of Allah", this guy didn't really have a choice, huh?

Even babies know the difference betwen right and wrong...

Babies as young as 6 to 10 months old showed crucial social judging skills before they could talk, according to a study by researchers at Yale University's Infant Cognition Center published in Thursday's journal Nature.

The infants watched a googly-eyed wooden toy trying to climb roller-coaster hills and then another googly-eyed toy come by and either help it over the mountain or push it backward. They then were presented with the toys to see which they would play with.

Nearly every baby picked the helpful toy over the bad one.

Are trying to figure out what Steffi's pullin' here...

A top German justice official says he expects his country will find a way for Karlheinz Schreiber to testify at a public inquiry in Canada — even if he is extradited to Germany before then.

Reinhard Nemetz, who heads the regional court where Mr. Schreiber faces criminal charges, says it's up to the federal justice departments in both countries to work something out, but he doesn't think there would be any problems.
See... the Germans know all about Schreiber's very calculated stalling tactics... they've been trying to get their mitts on him since the last millenium. So when Dion and company get on the "save poor Karl" bandwagon... they don't know what to make of it.
Mr. Nemetz said Mr. Schreiber's latest argument is just another example of his “salami tactics.” “He always ends up slicing off another thin excuse when he needs it, so the salami never runs out, and it's another whole debate as to whether there's any truthful taste to it.”

Mr. Nemetz says German authorities are frustrated that Canada's justice system has allowed Mr. Schreiber to avoid extradition for more than eight years. “I just can't understand why this is taking so long,” he said.
Well, Mr. Nemetz... you could just come out and ask Steffi and his fiberal friends what they're trying to accomplish here.

Apparently fur is no longer ecologically, or politically incorrect... funny how that works.

“Now, you see the young women in their 20s coming in. They want the short jackets. You can wear them over cocktail dresses. Or you can wear them with jeans. And they come in fun colours.”

Which raises another surprising factor in the fur resurgence: Unlike all the disposable fashion out there, fur is a surprisingly green product.
Well, who knew... fur even redresses "root causes" inequities as it greens the planet.
According to the Fur Council, 60,000 aboriginal and traditional trappers in Canada practise sustainable harvesting. Few, often safe (such as alum), chemicals are used to dress hides, and any dyes are monitored closely to cut effluents. And fur lasts a long time.

This means it can be reused. “Remodelling is a big part of the business,” Papaevangelidis says. “Young girls are dying to wear their grandmother's furs. And grandmothers are dying to see the treasures they once prized so highly worn again.”

Another one bites the dust

Just like all the recent hysteria over Taser related deaths... it turns out the supposed rising tide of hate crimes in North America... is a myth.

Less than 10,000 total hate crimes of any kind in an entire year, in a country of over 300 million people? Only 7,330 known hate crime offenders?

That means that hate crimes are a drop in the bucket. They are the least of our problems.

The two-thousandths of one percent (.002%) of Americans who committed hate crimes against anyone in 2006, including Protestants (35 complete losers) clearly need help.
While we're playing around with numbers I have one final factoid for the Taser Death Squad Hysterical Society.

There have been 16 taser related deaths in Canada over the last four years.

That works out to 4 instances per year... which, my paranoid friends, is statistically insignificant.

In 2002 alone, twenty-nine Canadians were killed in avalanches.

I'm betting more than 4 Canadians per year, manage to run over and kill themselves with their own cars... and nobody's setting up a public enquiry into that totally predictable and avoidable stupidity.

Many comments we have received seem to suggest that the use of a TASER is never justified based on the likelihood of inflicting serious injury or death.

In fact, our experience and that of other police services over the course of many years and thousands of incidents, as well as existing research, have shown that deploying a TASER is often the fastest and safest way to gain control of an individual.

We and other police services teach our officers that it is less likely to cause serious injury than other tactics.

-- Sangisar, Afghanistan -- The gunfire started at sunrise Saturday and continued until noon. It was a bitter fight on both sides.
As insensitive as this may sound to Steffi, Gilles and Taliban Jack... sometimes you gotta call in tough, courageous warriors... to break stuff and kill people.
The Taliban resorted to using children as human shields, according to soldiers who witnessed the tactic, and the encircled Canadians called in artillery and air strikes so close to their own positions that a soldier suffered shrapnel wounds from friendly fire.

“Why Sangisar?” Major Moffet said. “It was a node for the Taliban."

"Now it's ours.”

-- OTTAWA -- The federal Conservatives will launch a flurry of law-and-order anti-crime legislation next week to crack down on illegal drug use, identity theft and young offenders.

The Tories are also expected to introduce a bill to toughen penalties for youth crime and give police greater powers to detain alleged young offenders.
I'm lovin' this... use a gun -- you're done.
Critics expect the legislation would see youths accused of serious or violent offences, as well as repeat offenders, automatically transferred to adult court.

The minister also indicated the legislation will make it more difficult for youths accused of crimes to get out on bail and toughen sentences for youth gun crimes and auto thefts.

One of the changes Mr. Nicholson plans is to reduce the credit given to convicted criminals for time spent in custody awaiting trial. Many judges now give them double credit, which often means they serve significantly less than their original sentence.

Welcome Back Khadr

Poor defenseless little Omar Khadr is back in the news...

CBS News has broadcast shocking new footage of a Canadian terrorism suspect allegedly building bomb timers and planting land mines while he was a 15-year-old militant hoping to take on American soldiers in Afghanistan.

Beyond the new footage, the 12-minute 60 Minutes piece contained few surprises for Canadians who have been following the case for years.

There are more remarks from fundamentalist Islamist Khadr family, whose televised statements will once again do little to build public support for the groups and politicians who are arguing that Canada should adopt a principled stance and lobby to repatriate Mr. Khadr from Guantanamo Bay.
And hey... there's Omar's baby brother, Humpty... you know, the one the Canadian taxpayers paid to put back together again.
Omar's younger brother Karim was also shown in the piece. The footage was shot in 2004, just weeks after he returned to Canada from Pakistan. He survived, but was paralyzed by the deadly battle that killed his father.

In that footage, a 14-year-old Karim Khadr talks about how he wanted to become a martyr so he could be doted on in the afterlife by dozens of fragrant-smelling virgins.

He adds that he expected that Omar would want to resume battles against Americans when he gets out of Guantanamo Bay. “When he's all right again he'll find them again … and take his revenge.”
Isn't that special.

I sure hope Steffi and the Fiberals can bring Omar back to Toronto real soon... it's the least we can do for him.

This woman dodged a bullet

She ran over my foot... I wouldn't be reaching for the Taser.

-- OTTAWA -- A Taser was used to subdue a woman who side-swiped a taxi and crashed into a police cruiser after running over an Ottawa police officer's foot while trying to flee a traffic stop early Saturday morning.

Ottawa police said the officer had attempted to pull over the suspected impaired driver just after 2:30 a.m. when she sped away, running over the officer's foot.

According to police, the driver then crashed into the taxi and a cruiser before being stopped again.

Bringing back the Death Penalty

No, guess again... it's not that scary Stephen Harper.

-- KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Jamaican lawmakers are considering resuming hangings in response to rising violent crime, almost two decades since the last person was executed by the noose in this Caribbean nation.

Jamaicans have pushed for the measure, Karl Samuda, general secretary of Prime Minister Bruce Golding's ruling party, said Saturday.
Ah, yes, Jamaica... a veritable rightwing bastion of law and order.
"Based on our observation, there is a strong sentiment in the country for hanging to resume," Samuda said. "We want to make sure the people get their wish."

About 45 inmates are on death row in Jamaica, which reported a record 1,671 homicides in 2005 and is considered one of the most violent countries in the world.

What's in a name?

The U.S. Census Bureau is charting the changing face of American Society...

Step aside Moore and Taylor. Welcome Garcia and Rodriguez.

While the historical record is sketchy, several demographers said it was probably the first time that any non-Anglo name was among the 10 most common in the nation.

“It shows we’re getting stronger,” Mr. Padilla said. “If there’s that many of us to outnumber the Anglo names, it’s a great thing.”
In Canada... except apparently... when we're holding education, or law enforcement feet to the fire... we can't even acknowledge the existence of statistics by culture or ethnicity.
The Census Bureau’s analysis found that some surnames were especially associated with race and ethnicity.

More than 96 percent of Yoders, Kruegers, Muellers, Kochs, Schwartzes, Schmitts and Novaks were white.

Nearly 90 percent of the Washingtons were black, as were 75 percent of the Jeffersons, 66 percent of the Bookers, 54 percent of the Banks and 53 percent of the Mosleys.
There you go... I said it out loud and society didn't collapse.

Really... how wise is it, that anything to do with cultural differences, except in the context of annual street festivals, is off-limits?

Remember, folks... if you're not measuring... you're not managing.

So when do we get to expand the discussion to poverty and crime?

Well, you know... unless you're not really interested in finding solutions.

Harder, faster...

Swat gets hot

If Musharraf gets his ass handed to him in the Swat Valley... it's truly the beginning of the end.

-- ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- The army said Saturday that it has massed 15,000 troops for a major assault on Islamic militants in a scenic northern valley, whose fall has raised concern about Pakistan's ability to withstand rising extremism.
This won't be an easy go... the "tribal areas" are the Pakistani equivalent of the wild, wild, west of 150 years ago... with automatic weapons.
Foreign fighters have allegedly joined the armed followers of Maulana Fazlullah, a pro-Taliban cleric in the valley, amplifying Western fears that swaths of Pakistan near the Afghan border offer an increasingly safe haven for al-Qaida.

Dion suffers severe whiplash...

Pulling 180 degree turn on veiled voters.

-- OTTAWA -- Liberals have lost their enthusiasm for forcing veiled Muslim women to show their faces if they want to vote in federal elections.

Some Grit MPs now admit the party was wrong to jump on the bandwagon two months ago, joining the three other federal parties in demanding that Elections Canada insist all voters uncover their faces.

At the time, the parties were contesting three crucial by-elections in Quebec, where the issue of veiled voters was part of a heated debate over how far the province should go in accommodating immigrants.
You've gotta love the elasticity of conscience here... turns out Steffi is more flexible than Paris Hilton on girls night out.
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion was among those who initially urged Elections Canada to revisit its decision not to compel byelection voters to show their faces.

"It's important to identify the person. It may be done in a very respectful way but it must be done," he said at the time.

But now that the Tory government has introduced legislation to require precisely that, Dion is hinting that Liberals won't support it.

In a brief interview Thursday, Dion said cryptically that his party "thinks that the bill misses its target."

Documents obtained under the Access to Information Act show German officials have complained about lengthy delays in Schreiber's extradition, but Schreiber continued his legal battle.

In 2004, Irwin Cotler, who was then [Liberal] justice minister, ordered Schreiber's deportation.

Burned or buried?

Was talking with some friends tonight, about someone who had just recently died and been memorialised by friends... and this article just jumped out at me...

In theory, death care should be immune from short-term economic swings. Death is one of only two sure things in life, and the U.S. population is aging.
It seems the funeral biz is currently experiencing a bit of a downturn, due mostly to the rising popularity of cremation.

And what's not to like here... cheaper and eco-friendly.
Compared with full-on casket burials, cremation is less expensive, requires less labor and fewer materials, and doesn't involve purchasing a plot. As such, it's perfect for an era in which consumers are trading down.
Easier, cheaper... no draining out the dead guy and filling him with chemicals... man, this one's hard to argue.

I actually believe that after you die... what's left is just a slab of "soon to be spoiled meat" that should be cleaned up in fairly short order. Anybody who's ever lost a Swedish meatball down the back of the stove knows exactly what I mean.

Mrs. Neo's mom was cremated... so I have a sneaking suspicion I'm gonna end up in a crafty wooden box on a shelf in the basement... it's where all the junk we're not using inevitably ends up.

Funerals are for the living... and that's just fine with me.

Death is really such a funny sort of thing. Lots of people are seemingly too freaked out by the mere idea of not existing, to even joke about it. But somehow everybody is drawn to the flame. They're repelled and still somehow fascinated at the same time.

My wife's cousin is married to a guy, a successful businessman, who wants to give up manufacturing to put out a magazine about death. I think it'd probably be a huge success.

What I have come to realise personally... is that I am mostly pleasantly surprised to have reached solid middle age. I've always been a bit on the "glass half empty" side of things. I spent a horrendous summer the year I turned nine, making bargains with God... because I was convinced I was going to die.

Funny how remote and silly that seems right now.

Inspector Clouseau strikes again

From the "How not to conduct an Investigation" handbook.

-- OTTAWA -- The public inquiry into the Air India bombing heard a dramatic story Wednesday from a key former Canadian spy, who criticized the RCMP for the way in which he was forced to give up his most promising source in the Sikh community.
Sounds like this whole thing was doomed from day one.
But Mr. Eshleman told a public inquiry that the promising relationship ended abruptly through the actions of the RCMP.

The police force demanded that CSIS sever ties with the man. Then two officers showed up at the man's doorstep, flashing their badges, demanding answers on the spot.

Documents from the two RCMP officers who surprised Mr. A at his home, where he was living with others, acknowledge: “We got off on wrong foot.”

Oh waiter, there's a testicle...

In my soup...

Oh, it could have been worse all right - we could be making Dog Stew or Sheep Testicles or Tongue of the Judge or one of the other recipes contained in her new book, The Axis of Evil Cookbook.
Of course... there is the obligatory, new age, politically correct catch here...
She's only tested the vegetarian recipes, so if you make the sheep's testicles and they taste slightly off, feel free to drop her a line.

So with meat off the menu and fish clearly a touchy subject, we're forced into the world of legumes. A good thing that most of America's enemies eat a bean- and grain-rich diet, then.
And what's a morality tale without a moral.
They'd surely outlive their Denny's-scarfing rivals, if not for the diseases and suicide bombings and food shortages and such.

Rolling the Dice

Here's another interesting consequence of our contemporary "anything goes" society.

Four transplant recipients in Chicago have contracted H.I.V. from an organ donor, the first known cases in more than a decade in which the virus was spread by organ transplants.

The organs also gave all four patients hepatitis C, in what health officials said was the first reported instance in which the two viruses were spread simultaneously by a transplant.
Couldn't happen to you, or anyone you know, right?
About 9 percent of organ donors qualify as high-risk based on behaviors like prostitution or drug use with needle-sharing. Transplant experts say the percentage would probably be higher if they had full information on all donors.
Party on, dude.

I'm not much on religion myself...

But this sounds about right...

"Even a few second's (mature) thought leads to the conclusion that, nice as the concept sounds initially, an all-inclusive heaven is an unjust heaven, because the evil and the good receive the same reward."

"Which, come to think of it, is basically the Democratic Party platform."

Idiots, explosives & falling anvils

Anybody else see Steffi and the Stooges embarrassing themselves on the news tonight?

I guess Stef was so pumped about his moment in the sun... he didn't realise that the Prime Minister had just announced a full public enquiry into the Mulroney allegations... so his angry posturing a moment later... demanding that self-same enquiry... came off looking like a demented senior's moment.

You've also gotta love the manufactured outrage over the Conservative's failure to immediately jump on the so-called "smoking gun" Schreiber evidence.

-- OTTAWA -- Karlheinz Schreiber sent copies of red-hot documents to the Liberals and NDP two weeks ago detailing correspondence with Prime Minister Stephen Harper but neither party reacted to the provocative contents.
Still... you never wanna let the facts get in the way of disingenuous leftbot theatre.
Still, the opposition hammered away at Harper today over his insistence that he never saw any letters sent to him by the controversial German businessman in 2006 and 2007.

We're Number One... we're Number...

These statistics are actually from the United States... but I can't imagine Canada is too far behind.

-- ATLANTA -- More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year — the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday.

"A new U.S. record," said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr. of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Good work people! Let's keep that mindless, unprotected promiscuity ball rolling.

Remember, the single most important thing to consider here is your personal pleasure.

Responsibility is for all those old, uptight conservatives.
More bad news: Gonorrhea rates are jumping again after hitting a record low, and an increasing number of cases are caused by a "superbug" version resistant to common antibiotics, federal officials said Tuesday.

Syphilis is rising, too. The rate of congenital syphilis — which can deform or kill babies — rose for the first time in 15 years.

Now it's the Wall Street Journal.

-- ADELAIDE, Australia -- News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch said Tuesday he intends to make access to The Wall Street Journal's Web site free, trading subscription fees for anticipated ad revenue.

“We are studying it and we expect to make that free, and instead of having one million (subscribers), having at least 10 million-15 million in every corner of the earth,” Murdoch said.

The Senate elections bill was not enthusiastically received by opposition parties and was essentially allowed to languish on the order paper.

Yeah... take it easy, guys... she's just a girl.
Operatives in all three camps argued that the Clintons were keeping a “boys vs. girl” story line alive to try to stoke sympathy for Mrs. Clinton — something Clinton advisers emphatically deny.

An Edwards spokesman, Chris Kofinis, said, “With all due respect, there’s nothing really tough about answering questions — John Edwards does it every day.”

Moments before vets were set to march off to a service to remember their fallen comrades Sunday morning, the man wandered up a path at Belleville Armouries to the cenotaph and spat on the stone memorial. A Belleville police officer witnessed the act and arrested the man. The man was brought to police headquarters on criminal charges.

-- MONTPELIER, Vermont -- Patty Cooper's landlord normally welcomes tenants who use animals to help them get around, such as guide dogs for the blind.
Well, that sounds pretty reasonable. So what's the problem here?
So after the disabled woman bought a 32-inch (81-centimeter) tall miniature horse to pull her wheelchair, she asked to keep the animal in her home. When her landlord rejected the request, she filed a human rights complaint.
Wow... talk about hard-hearted... I mean, what's a little horseshit among friends?
Cooper, 50, paid $1,000 for the 1-year-old gelding named Earl, expecting to use it for trips to the bus stop and into town. The agency that owns the apartment complex in Waitsfield denied her proposal, citing concern about horse droppings, hay storage and lack of grazing space.

Cooper insists the 100-pound (45-kilo) tobiano pinto can be house-trained and said it "just makes me so happy whenever I'm around him. I'm not lonely anymore."

-- OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper is soaring up as the top pick of most Canadians to lead the country, while Liberal Leader Stephane Dion has plummeted to third spot behind the NDP’s Jack Layton, a new poll has found.

SES pollster Nik Nanos said the results are big news for Harper, who has cracked opened a 20-point lead from his nearest rival in the leadership popularity contest. The results deliver the worst news for Dion, who has fallen 10 points in the last 90 days.

Harper’s popularity is growing in vote-rich Quebec, which is expected to be a key battleground in the next federal election. In that province, 41% said they think he would make the best prime minister, up from 24% three months ago.

Why blame the triggerman...

When you can simply point fingers at the cops...

Pieters said yesterday the province failed to protect a Crown witness who testified against his accused killer after intervening in a swarming and saving a friend's life.

He said Latchana, also known as O.G., was not a Crips member and challenges Peel investigators to prove their claims.
So Selwyn... everybody in "the community" knew this guy was gonna be killed... but the cops hung him out to dry?

How do you know that?
Pieters said the threats to kill Latchana were publicly made in two songs accusing the victim of being a snitch.

One song said, "don't let me catch you 'cause those guns will spark ... I will find you after dark, I don't give a fuck man, 'cause the time is soft."

"I'll murder everybody in your family tree."
Ah yes... the healing power of hip-hop.

Now, call me wacky... but if I'm the acknowledged target of "a gang vendetta"... which Selwyn claims everybody and their dog knew about... I'm thinkin' spending all night gettin' wasted at the local boozecan might be a pretty dumb idea.

Of course, if Selwyn is suggesting that police should arrest ANY rapper who uses violent or abusive lyrics in their work... we've got a whole new ball game here.

Peel Police insisted today that investigators never knew that David Lachana, who was shot dead Nov. 3, was marked for death.

LAST WORD: Toronto Star eulogises O'Neil Grant
-- KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Nothing was stolen. Police say the killing looks like a targeted hit.

"He was wanted and they came and got him," says Det. Robert Thompson, who is investigating the case, adding he has no idea who wanted Grant dead or why.

Most puzzling to Thompson was the Toronto Star's interest in the killing. This, after all, is a country where this year some 1,200 people have so far been killed – 80 per cent of them with guns.
Strangely enough... there's a "blame the cops, not the killer" theme here as well.
Det. Thompson says "it's only a matter of time" before Grant's murderer is arrested. Grant's friends dismiss that as fodder for foreign consumption. They fear police are more interested in keeping Grant's belongings than solving the crime.
Yeah... that makes sense.

-- OTTAWA -- Several MPs are concerned about a new security measures in Parliament, including the previously unarmed House of Commons security service being issued with batons and the possibility that they may one day carry sidearms.

The shift, including the presence of armed security constables in civilian clothing at all public entrances to buildings housing MPs within the parliamentary precinct, has been gradual under new Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers.
It's true... I don't think any of those guys they arrested in Toronto last year, said anything about beheading Garth specifically.

Let's face it, though... any reasonable person who's ever heard him prattling on... has surely thought about locking him in a dark, damp basement for the rest of his life.
"I don't know what the threat is," said Mr. Turner. "I don't understand, as a guy who works in these buildings all day like you, why we need people to protect us with sticks and guns."

-- BBC News, Rome -- Fans fought running battles with police and a 38-year-old officer was killed. A total of 29 people were arrested, several of them under the age of 18.
Apparently, in present day Italy... this sort of insanity is just regarded as part of the game.
To those who follow Italian football, the violence, while appalling, was not surprising. It is now endemic at Italian stadiums. There is a growing core of fans for whom the game is incidental - they come to the stadium to fight and many of them come armed.

Investigators say they discovered the remains of crude bombs, weapons and drugs after Friday night's Catania game.
Funny... Italy's troops in Afghanistan probably have it easier than the police back home right now. In fact, Canadian casualties are currently running at seven times what the Italian contingent has suffered... and I don't think it's because Canadians are clumsier.

The documentary will also fine tune the way it portrays protesters who burned themselves alive in Tiananmen Square, self-immolations that Beijing and the Falun Gong accuse each other of perpetrating.
The fact is, by intervening and creating a media shitstorm, the Chinese government actually ensured that the audience for this film will be significantly larger.

Architect of Doom

Despite all the yipyap about David Latchana wanting to be an architect... it turns out this guy wasn't headed anywhere... but up in smoke.

-- MALTON -- A young man mourned at his funeral yesterday for close family ties was a member of the Crips street gang, Peel Regional police told reporters later.

Homicide officers said two men accused in the Saturday execution-style death of David Latchana, 23, were also members of the same gang.
Apparently though, even being a murdered gangbanger... isn't enough to turn off the delusional hero-worship tap.
But at Humberlea Church of God memorial, relatives who closed the service to the media, spoke only of his love for his relatives and as a Pied Piper role model for little nieces and nephews.

"He was like a hero," David Latchana's aunt Allison said before the 90-minute funeral in the Steeles Ave. W. and Hwy 27 area church.

"I have a little girl who wants to be just like him ... there are over 20 kids in the family and they'd follow him everywhere," said the aunt whose nephew used her middle name and called her "Auntie Ann" but she did not want to give her last name.
Holy crap, lady... your little girl wants to be "a gangbanger"?

Everybody's always talking about a lack of role models, in the various "ethnic communities."

It sure sounds like it's more a case, of choosing them "less than wisely."
