Enough pussy-footin' around

It's time to go to Plan B.

-- GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- South Korea and relatives of 21 kidnapped Koreans appealed for U.S. help Tuesday, but Afghanistan said for the first time it will not release insurgent prisoners — the Taliban's key demand to free the captives.
Ok, Hamid... that's a good start, but here's the rest of the scenario.

You take that list of prisoners the Taliban gave you... and after drawing straws, or a round of one-potato - two potato... you, FIRST... hang two jihadis to get Timmy Terrorist's attention and, more importantly, balance out the scoreboard.

SECOND... tell Timmy to give up his hostages now... or you hang one of these terrorheads at the top of every hour until you empty out the hoosegow.

These guys don't understand Geneva Convention... they understand death... and until you start playing their game, they'll always be ahead of you.

Or you can just let the Koreans die.

It's that simple.

* They must surrender their Canadian passports
* They must seek counseling from their respective imams
So what does it all really mean?
Although the charges will not proceed further, Crown attorneys have the option of re-activating the charges within the next year. After one year, the charges will be dropped.

-- VANCOUVER -- There are so many people in B.C. scamming Canada's foreign student-visa program - from bogus students to shady schools - that authorities can only investigate about five per cent of the cases, according to an internal government report obtained by CanWest News Service.
Uh, guys... I think I've found the problem here.
While immigration officers have the power to place conditions on foreign students to attend school, they often don't.

"The effect of this is that there is no requirement that a student actually attend school despite the fact that the individual is in Canada to study," the report stated.

Toronto Gangbanger murders...

Claim another innocent victim...

Concerns about the "sinister uses" of guns in society have prompted University of Toronto officials to rid the campus of its 88-year-old sport shooting range, despite its continued popularity and spotless safety record.

"In today's world, even the perception of tolerance of guns and gun violence is seen as a negative," said Catherine Riggall, the university's vice-president of business affairs, who approved the decision recently.
I dunno Catherine... given the repeated unwillingness of the various "communities" out there to cooperate with the police... there actually seems to be a demonstrated never-ending tolerance for gun violence... but don't let that stop you from shutting down a legitimate activity that hasn't harmed a single person in almost a century of it's existence.

Ms. Riggall concludes...
"This is the last university in the country to have a gun range on campus ... it's just not seen as a priority activity."
Unlike the university's renowned "Sexual Diversity" program...
"Visiting lecturers will address technical aspects of flogging, restraint, and role-play."
Good grief.

Let Ms. Riggall know how you feel.

UPDATE: But how could this happen again...

Police have issued a Canada-wide-warrant for a 28-year-old who is wanted for second-degree murder after a man was stabbed Saturday morning.

Police are looking for Vimalathas Mohanarajah after they found Ajiganth Mahalingam wounded in an apartment building shortly before 6:30 a.m.

The 27-year-old was allegedly stabbed after a dispute erupted at a birthday party -- and police said the victim and the accused definitely weren't strangers.

There's bad news and there's...

Bad news.

New Canadian research shows that the presence of trans fats in the blood system can also mess with the heart's rhythm, worsening the severity of a heart attack and jacking up the likelihood of death.

"It's like a double whammy," said Peter Light, a researcher at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton and lead author of the study.

The new study, published in the European Molecular Biology Journal, helps elucidate how trans fats kill. Dr. Light said the heart is essentially an electric organ, and it uses fat as an energy source. A wave of electricity passes through the heart once per second, and each time calcium is pumped in and then out again.

This is definitely something we need to be looking at here in Canada.

Even terrorist cells can't keep a secret forever...

We went into the jungle (of British Columbia). There we joined a dynamite stick with a battery and triggered off a blast.

Lakhbir and Inderjit, even at that time, had in their minds a plan to blast an aeroplane. I was not too keen on this plan but agreed to arrange for the dynamite sticks.
Also interesting is the alleged targeted killing of Talwinder Singh Parmar by Indian police... apparently to cover a link to a police informer.
Sarabjit said the PHRO’s probe has shown that Parmar was killed to hide the name of Lakhbir, who was an Indian agent.

The PHRO told Canadian authorities that conclusive evidence existed of Parmar being killed in police custody and not in the "encounter" shown in FIR No 105 registered at Phillaur police station on October 15, 1992.

The PHRO report, AI Flight 182 Case, states "On October 14, 1992, a high-level decision was conveyed to the police that Parmar had to be killed..."
Police in India are denying that Parmar was murdered and have attempted to portray this version of events as a further coverup by Canada's national law enforcement agency.
Then Jalandhar SSP and now IGP, Satish K Sharma, denied the charge. “It was a clean encounter.

The RCMP is bringing this up because they botched their investigations and failed to get convictions,” he said.

RELATED: Time out for an opposing viewpoint...

Marla emailed me to say she thinks there is some sort of equivalence between the fatal shooting of high school student Jane Creba and the murder of Marla's friend, 31 year-old Sean "Juice" James.
Creba was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but you do not allow the same room for Shawn.

Why, because he is black, was on a street known for late night drug deals - late at night - and dresses a certain way?
Marla... despite the fact that you seem to be accusing me of being an implacable, unreasoning racist... lemme take a second here, to point out a couple of obviously glaring inconsistencies in your thesis.

One... witnesses say a cab rolled up on Sean at two in the morning in an area of the city known for drug deals... and the occupants shot him dead.

In the Creba murder, two gangs of young, armed black men started blasting away at each other on one of the city's busiest streets during retail shopping hours.

It's simply not the same thing.

Two... neighbours identified him as a drug dealer.

Now Marla, perhaps the witnesses are, for whatever reason, lying about your friend. It doesn't seem like the simplest, or most obvious explanation... but it certainly is a possibility.

Will you, in turn... admit that it's also possible that the media coverage is correct?

As for your comments regarding the Ephraim Brown shooting...
With Ephraim's family, that is where they were celebrating a family birthday etc. It may not have been the most responsible thing in the world to do, in hindsight.

But at the time, they probably were trying to enjoy themselves and not anticipating a gang member to show up and destroy their nice evg. People the world over -and here in Toronto, live differently from you, party differently from you and exist differently from you.
All I can say here is that, cultural differences and "partying differences" (whatever that means) aside... letting an 11 year old child out at "Banger Central" at one in the morning is not only not, "the most responsible thing in the world to do"... it borders on sheer insanity.

And whoever decided to let Ephraim out at this hour, at this place... will have to live with the knowledge that they could... and indisputably should have... made another choice.

32 million dollars doesn't go as far...

As it used to... but Dalton McGuinty takes a page out of the "Ferdinand Marcos Guide to Savvy Political Spending"... to get maximum bang for OUR TAXPAYER bucks...

Auditor-General Jim McCarter said in a report released today that the process used to hand out $32-million in grants in the past two years was "not open, transparent or accountable."

“In essence, the decisions behind ‘who got what' were often based on conversations, not applications,” Mr. McCarter said at a news conference today following the release of his 27-page report.
It can't possibly be that bad, I'm sure there was a careful vetting process...
In one example, the Ontario Cricket Assoc. applied for a grant of $150,000, but the very next day received a cheque for $1-million, Mr. McCarter said.
Surely though, there was careful thought given to ensuring maximum benefit for ALL Ontario taxpayers...
Mr. McGuinty apologized to all Ontarians and vowed on Thursday to put an end to the practice of using year-end money from the ministry to make grants to ethno-cultural groups.

A total of $32.4-million was rushed out at the end of the past two fiscal years to multicultural groups with ties to the Liberal Party.
Wow... how did that bastion of honesty and accountability, Honest Dalt, react to all this? He must have been some pissed, huh?
Mr. McGuinty called in the auditor in May following concerted efforts by his government to block attempts by opposition members for an investigation into the alleged multimillion-dollar slush fund.

Workers with other immigrant service providers declined to be interviewed for this story, citing concerns that publicly criticizing the government over its relationship with CPAC might hurt their own efforts to win grants.

However, one said of CPAC: "To be honest, it is not that they have been doing this the longest or that they have the best track record. Somehow they have managed to get the most attention from the minister."

What's that scary Stephen Harper up to now?
Bill C-44 would remove a 30-year-old exemption of the Indian Act from the Canadian Human Rights Act and extend the reach of the Canadian Human Rights Commission over claims of discrimination that have been shielded because the Indian Act is outside the human rights code.

The Canadian Human Rights Act outlaws discrimination in employment and services on such grounds as sex, race, ethnic origin, and marital status. The exemption has been condemned time and again in Canada and at the United Nations.

An eagerly anticipated auditor general's report into year-end government grants to ethnic groups with alleged Liberal party ties won't do anything to help the party's image when it's released Thursday, opposition critics say.
Despite the McGuinty governments best efforts to stonewall any investigation of their massive bribe-a-bloc initiative... this report is gonna surface at a very critical juncture.
The Liberals initially voted down an opposition motion to have the province's auditor examine how $32 million in grants were doled out to various multicultural organizations – some of which were said to have Liberal ties – at the end of the last fiscal year.

Instead, the Liberals passed a motion urging the grant beneficiaries to account for their spending and to report back within six months – a deadline that would have been after the Oct. 10 election – but later bowed to opposition pressure.
This is the sort of outright voter bribery that would have made Papa Doc Duvalier blush.

For anyone who has problems with...

Our horribly unfair, draconian Canadian society, you might want to take note here...

Legislators in the Indonesian province of Papua are debating whether to approve a bill allowing microchips to be implanted in people with HIV.

The measure has been put forward as a way of preventing the spread of HIV in the Indonesian province. About 2.4% of Papuans are known to be carrying the virus, and infection rates in the province are estimated to be 15 times the national average.
And they're apparently not planning on stopping at microchips.
As well as calling for the introduction of microchips, the bill also suggests mandatory testing of every resident in Papua.

Parliamentarians are reported to have discussed tattooing those found to be carrying the virus.
It's certainly not an idea you'd hear anyone advancing around here.

A couple of years ago, after experiencing what paramedics euphemistically refer to as a "syncopal episode", I found myself in hospital for the biological equivalent of a 72 hour automobile diagnostic.

When machine science failed to turn up any foreign objects or obvious defects in the old brainbox... the neurology residents started spitballin... and one of their ideas was to test for sexually transmitted diseases, including of course, HIV/AIDS. I gather the request stirs up a good bit of resentment in these parts because of the rather tentative way they asked for my permission.

As a non-junkie and unashamedly monogamous, heterosexual husband & father, I hadn't expected this particular request... but as the recipient of a single tattoo acquired some ten years previous, from a less than surgical suite type operation, I agreed to their request.

Compared to the repeated, and less than pleasant extraction of spinal fluid... it seemed like a pretty insignificant procedure.

As it turns out, the tests came back negative and to this day, no one has the faintest idea what happened that fateful night... but the whole experience gave me an appreciation for the importance of personal health.

I'm guessing I'm also one of the few people around here who can actually prove they're not syphilitic, or HIV positive. Not that it'll ever come up in polite conversation.

No real lofty point to all this... I just figured I'd share.

I guess I'm also glad I don't live in Indonesia.

If Michael Bryant put as much energy...

Into doing his job properly... as he did trying to "ban", for instance, dogs and handguns... there'd be a few less bodies littering the streets...

Witness the Ephraim Brown shooting...

The two men, just out of their teens, have a history of criminal charges. In Mr. Eubank's case, those charges include weapons offences, allegations he assaulted a police officer and, on one occasion, eight counts of failing to comply with bail conditions.

In March of last year, Mr. Eubank went to trial on multiple charges. After more than a week, the judge instructed the jury to return a not-guilty verdict.
As for the other man arrested in this case... apparently the first kid he shot was deductable.
In the summer of 2005, Mr. Sappleton was arrested and charged in connection with the notorious drive-by shooting that wounded four-year-old Shaquan Cadougan — charges that were withdrawn by prosecutors.
What law... what ban... does Michael Bryant imagine, in his wildest dreams, will stop these two predators from procuring and using guns?

So maybe before our esteemed Liberal Attorney General starts screaming about taking perfectly legal registered firearms away from law-abiding citizens... he should get his own house in order.

And get these assholes off the street for good.

Root causes, my pampered Ph.D ass

Sometimes you just have to let the data run free... and follow it the best that you can...

All in all, the research that professor Krueger gathers together suggests that if there is a link between poverty, education, and terrorism, it is the opposite of the one popularly assumed.
Apparently, contrary to the popular perception of the downtrodden revolutionary of humble beginnings... there is a thriving and diverse "Islamofascist freedom fighter" community out there.
Claude Berrebi and Harvard economist Efraim Benmelech studied—there's no nice way to put this—the human-resources policy of Palestinian terrorist groups.

They found that older, better-educated terrorists secured more important suicide missions and killed more people.
Now, on the face of it, that would seem to make perfect sense... but there are always exceptions to the rule.

Despite the fact that they were university educated and not "fresh off the goat" like so many of their middle-eastern brethren... the latest gang of UK terrorheads were also stunningly incompetent.

Four U.S. soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan and two other NATO troops have died in other parts of the country, NATO said Monday.

Coalition aircraft dropped four bombs during the engagement, and Afghan forces counted “more than four dozen” insurgents killed, it said.

They call him "Steffi Stumbles"

Outremont, in Montreal, is considered a safe Liberal riding. Perfect for parachuting in a female or minority candidate.

So who does Dion appoint?

Pandering yet again

There have been laws against possessing unregistered handguns since the 1930's... and I'm pretty sure nobody has recently repealed the laws regarding murder... so what exactly is this idiot yammering about now?

-- TORONTO -- Toronto Mayor David Miller called Sunday for tougher gun laws after a spate of late-night shootings left an 11-year-old and two others dead in unrelated incidents.

“It's very clear that gun violence is connected to the ownership of guns,” Mr. Miller told the media.
Yeah... show me the connection here.

How exactly is going after legitimate owners of registered firearms gonna affect the overwhelmingly black-on-black gun violence that is plaguing Toronto-the-less-than-good?

If, in fact, police ever find the shooters, or the guns here... and with the less than spectacular cooperation from the "communities" involved, that's daily becoming less and less of a sure thing... they're gonna find that the guns in question were smuggled over our badly defended borders by one of Toronto's many criminal gangs.

Like the rest of Toronto's gun violence, these murders have nothing to do with legitimate owners and registered firearms.

Apparently though, no amount of factual evidence is gonna stop "Chicken Little" Miller and his progressive cheerleaders from trying to skew the responsibility here.

And where's Taliban Jack? If he really cared about saving lives maybe he could take a break from crapping on the military and hold a press conference demanding beefed up border security?

Yeah, right.

So what would actually do some good here?

How about more cops, less smoke and mirrors?

How about no more pretending the problem lies with law-abiding citizens?

Let's target the people pulling the triggers.

Don't be fooled... "Wake up and smell the socialists."

What goes up...

At least two people have been killed in Baghdad by gunshots fired to celebrate the Iraqi football team's quarter-final victory in the Asian Cup, police say.

At least 15 people were wounded when football fans fired weapons in the air across the Iraqi capital after their team beat Vietnam 2-0 in Bangkok.
Apparently in Iraq, simply cheering for your team is somehow considered inadequate... true sportsmanship requires suppressive fire.

This goes a ways towards explaining why... in the middle east... strapping explosives to your kids is considered an act of patriotic and military genius.

The confrontation between the Chilean soccer team and Toronto police rapidly escalated to become an international incident, with officials in Santiago laying the blame squarely on Canadian authorities.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet told local reporters she was dismayed with the use of "unjustified aggression" by Toronto police after a bloody brawl following a FIFA U-20 World Cup match late Thursday.
You get a whiff of what actually happened, near the bottom of the article...
When the final whistle blew and Chile had been shut out 3-0, the team started to go after the referees, egged on by an angry public audience. However, police ushered the refs away to the tunnels underneath the stands.
Of course, that's not how CTV chooses to spin this story.

China, already under suspicion as the source of tainted toothpaste, contaminated fish and toxic medicine, logged the largest number of violations in the past 12 months, with the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration rejecting 1,901 shipments of food and cosmetics.

But India and Mexico weren't far behind, with inspectors rejecting 1,787 and 1,560 shipments, respectively. The biggest reasons? Foods that are unapproved or contain poisons and pesticides.

Some are simply dirty, with inspectors finding that the shipment "appears to consist in whole or in part of a filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance or be otherwise unfit for food."

Unlike many of its neighbours...

India chooses to let the clock run forwards.

-- NEW DELHI (AP) -- India elected Pratibha Patil as the country's first female president Saturday in a vote seen as a victory for the hundreds of millions of Indian women who contend with widespread discrimination.

The election of a woman to the largely ceremonial post continues an Indian tradition using the presidency to bolster disadvantaged communities.

Hindu-majority India has had three Muslim presidents, including incumbent A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, since winning independence from Britain in 1947. It has also had a president from the minority Sikh community, and Kalam's predecessor, K. R. Narayanan, came from the bottom of the society's complex social hierarchy.
I'm not sure people should be breaking out the champagne and party hats just yet... India obviously has a ways to go on the road to a just society.
While India has had several women in positions of power - most notably Indira Gandhi, who was elected to the more powerful position of prime minister in 1966, and her daughter-in-law, Sonia Gandhi- many women still face rampant discrimination.

Many Indian families regard daughters as a liability due to a tradition requiring a bride's family to pay a groom's family a large dowry of cash and gifts. As a consequence their education is often neglected, and many don't get adequate medical treatment when ill.
It's obviously a long, tortured journey.

At least India isn't walking backwards.

Shutting down the big city...

Or, how David Miller is saving Toronto...

Transit commissioners will hold an emergency meeting today to look at shutting down the $1-billion Sheppard subway line and boosting the cost of a token by as much as a quarter.

Mayor David Miller said the cash-strapped TTC has no choice but to look at taking extreme measures because city council this week voted to put off until Oct. 22 a decision on whether to impose an unpopular land-transfer tax and a $60-a-year vehicle registration fee.
Uh, Mr Mayor... how about scrapping the limo service for city councillors to save some additional money and show solidarity with affected city commuters?

Yeah, I didn't think so.
Councillor Michael Thompson, who is also a transit commissioner, contended the call for TTC cuts was a continuation of a fear-mongering campaign launched by Miller to gain support for the two taxes.
Geez... that doesn't sound very fair.

I'm not exactly sure what brother Bob is basing his opinion on... because going by his past behaviour, Paul Cheema sure isn't looking like a knight in shining armour.
According to parole documents, in 1994, he kidnapped Ms. Singh at knifepoint, intending to take her back to B.C. However, Ms. Singh talked him into bringing her to a hotel in Winnipeg, where she fled from him.

In 1995, he attempted to kidnap her at her Winnipeg home, brandishing a silver handgun. Ms. Singh screamed, and her mother came to her rescue. The documents say he tried to shoot Ms. Singh's mother, but the gun did not discharge.

Some things to consider...

Before you break out the champagne...

Nationally, the homicide rate fell 10 per cent, ending two years of increases, but the number of young people accused of murder was the highest since data was first collected in 1961.
And some places were alarmingly worse than others.
There were 605 homicides reported to police in 2006, which translates to 1.85 homicides for every 100,000 people.

Saskatchewan again had the highest rate of all provinces, with 4.1 homicides for every 100,000 people.
Now that's one hell of a variation from the mean... what's up with the not-so-gentle folk of Saskatchewan?
Saskatchewan stands out for two reasons, he said: It consistently has the highest crime rate, and it has the highest percentage of native Canadians in its justice system.

Of course, the Chinese government, that bastion of consumer protection, advocacy and above all openness... is obviously deeply committed to protecting the interests of the citizenry.
Wang Fan, a Guangzhou food safety official, also denied the report and said an inspection of a local market had found no evidence of rats for sale.

"The city government of Guangzhou has not lifted the ban against the trading and eating of wild animals, including rats," the paper quoted Wang as saying.

Rats are considered a delicacy in Guangzhou, where people are reputed to eat anything that moves, but their sale was banned in 2003 as part of a general prohibition on wild animal consumption in the wake of the SARS epidemic.
In a show of socialist solidarity, the local population, environmentalists every one of them, were resolutely doing their part.
Farmers had bought black-market pesticides to complement government-issued poisons to kill rats on their plots, the paper said, which had alarmed local officials and experts who feared environmental pollution and the development of a "super rat race".

-- PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN -- Termination of the peace treaty, the hopeful handiwork of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, puts even greater pressure on the military leader as he struggles with both Islamic extremists and a gathering pro-democracy movement.
Say what you will about Pervez Musharraf, he's got some pretty big stones.

His so-called "treaty" with Islamic extremists in the "tribal lands" is part of a death-defying high wire act in this hotbed of islamo-trigue. Now the crazies have repudiated that agreement and are apparently bent on full out revolution.
Abdullah Farhad, a spokesman for the militants, said the ceasefire was terminated in North Waziristan, a remote area on the Afghan border where the United States worries that al-Qaeda has regrouped.

He said Taliban leaders made the decision after Pakistan failed to abide by their demand to withdraw troops from checkpoints by yesterday afternoon. "The peace agreement has ended," Mr. Farhad told reporters in Peshawar.
Perhaps this latest development will force Musharraf to sanction, or even support, greater US special forces activity in the troubled area.

The hard reality here is, if things suddenly go sideways for Musharraf, he isn't looking at impeachment hearings... he'll be lucky if he's actually dead... when the Islamo-screamers start sawing his head off his body.

Dr Alan Maryon Davis, president of the Faculty of Public Health said the results were surprising and experts had always thought the gap was bigger.

Although he added that if the results were compared with those in the most affluent sixth of the population there would probably be a greater difference.
I've got an idea... let's just compare the poor to Conrad Black and Barbara Amiel.

That'll make things so much clearer.

Mourning the untimely passing...

Of some local heroes...

A year ago at this time, there were flowers blooming in the pillar-like wooden baskets running along the sidewalk outside the Hells Angels' lowertown Toronto headquarters, decoratively disguising the reinforced concrete barriers that were keeping any intruders at bay.
While it's true that nobody actually died here... you wouldn't know that from Mark Bonokowski's outpouring of grief for a local motorcycle gang.

Don't worry though... Mark's little morality tale does have a bad guy.
The Hells clubhouse on Toronto's Eastern Ave., seized in the spring during joint-forces police raids on the biker gangs' clubhouses across the country, is unquestionably suffering from neglect.
In this case, it's Stephen Harper.
It has gone to seed -- weeds, peeling paint, and litter -- and the only place where blame can be placed is with the federal government.
I'm actually a little surprised Bono didn't go all in... and blame Harper and the feds for selling ecstasy to your sons and putting your daughters "on the pole."

Will somebody please tell me how this sort of unadulterated crap passes for serious journalism. I'm thinking anyone stupid enough to be paying for a subscription to this kind of claptrap probably isn't really able to read.

I guess that's what the Sunshine girl is for.

Technical difficulties

When it rains, it pours.

On top of being blackballed from the Blogging Tories aggregator... (details to follow shortly), I lost the modem in my primary box the other day... to a nearby lightning strike.

Currently using the jurassic laptop for net access... hope to slap a new modem card in later today, or tomorrow.

Service, as they say, will resume shortly.

**********

UPDATE: Back in business

Managed to scare up a modem from my computer boneyard in the basement.

No sense spending big bucks on a new modem when the dialup around here maxes out at 28.8 kps. Gotta check on what's happening with hi-speed around here.

**********

UPDATE: Back in the fold

Still having some intermittent comms issues, which prevented me from addressing the BT matter in any detail. My modem may not have been the only bit of hardware smoked by the lightning strike.

Perhaps it's just as well... I received an email from Stephen Taylor at Blogging Tories early this morning, letting me know that I have been reinstated.

Being the "free speech" kind of guy that I am, I had planned on sharing our exchange over the post in question... but in deference to Stephen's reconsideration of the matter, I remain inside the tent... pissing resolutely politically incorrectly outwards.

It was so long ago, it just slipped my mind...

The Musharraf regime has to stop...

Talking out of both sides of its mouth.

Revealing the delicacy of the situation, government officials on Wednesday alternated between reassuring the public that they were not waging war against all madrasas and at the same time trying to ward off further challenges to the state’s authority.
The Musharraf government has been walking a political knife edge for some time now, but making mealy-mouthed announcements just pisses off people on both sides of the Islamo-fence.
“The government of Pakistan has nothing against madrasas,” Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told reporters Wednesday afternoon. “But any madrasa which violates the law or promotes militancy will clearly be dealt with under the law.”
And some compromises just fly in the face of reason.
Ijaz ul-Haq, the Pakistani religious affairs minister, broke down in tears on a television talk show. “God willing, we will continue to protect the madrasas the way we protect our homes.”
It's important to remember that Pakistan is a nuclear armed nation.

If the crazies get their finger on that particular button... we're all in for some endless summer nights.

What woman could possibly resist...

This Prince Charming...

A warehouse manager who seduced a man's wife before demanding £1.4m to let him have her back has been jailed for six years by a Taunton Crown Court judge.
I guess there truly is "someone for everyone" in this cold, cruel world.
Peter Blair QC told the court that in February 2007 the businessman discovered his wife had made a banker's draft payment of £50,000 from their account to Cromie's.

She told him she was leaving him as it quickly became apparent her affair was back on. A day later she filed a divorce petition, as Cromie prepared his blackmail plan.
Fortunately, sometimes that big karmic wheel sometimes slips and rolls back over the truly unworthy.
He arranged a meeting with her husband two days later and outlined his demands - for £1.4m "he could have her back".

It was then the police were called.

When they start hauling out...

The politically correct lexicography, the smart money heads for the private school system...

England's secondary curriculum is being overhauled to give teachers more flexibility in the classroom whilst focusing on the basics, ministers say.

A quarter of the school day is to be freed up so that teachers can focus more on individual students' needs.

But more subjects like personal finance and cookery are set to be included - plus languages like Mandarin and Urdu.
And when weasel words start tumbling around, like the center stage finale at Cirque de Soleil, it's time to duck and cover.
Schools Secretary Ed Balls pledged to enhance teaching of "the three Rs" and said there would be "no dumbing down".

And more topical issues relevant to youngsters' everyday lives would be introduced.

"It has always been the role of schools to respond to the needs of the time."

"Schools need the space to borrow great ideas from around the world".
Of course, I have to share my personal favourite
"This is not meddling, this is much greater freedom - but with certain clear things prescribed."
Because, unlike the middle-east and pretty much all of Africa and well... a big chunk of Asia and, uh... South America and the former Soviet Union... Britain has made such a hellish hash of things.

And we can't have that.

Must be a slow news day...

In the nation's capital...

A band of disgruntled conservatives plans to throw a new party into the mix for Ontario voters as they gear up for the provincial election in October.

Anthony Silvestro, the group's spokesman, described the Ontario Alternative party as the first step in what he hopes will become a national alternative to the federal Conservative party.
Hope, of course, doesn't cost anything... and that's good news for Mr. Silvestro... his last kick at the cat was less than a rousing success.

In the 1999 Ontario general election, running under the banner of the "Confederation of Regions Party" in Ottawa West—Nepean, Mr. Silvestro managed to finish 7th out of 8 candidates with a total of 79 votes... apparently sweeping his family and immediate circle of friends.

It wasn't a total disaster however... he did manage to trounce Yogic Flyer and Natural Law Party candidate Lester J. Newby, who scraped up a measly 70 votes.

But hey... let's not stop the media from calling this new conservative "alternative" a threat to the Conservative Party of Ontario.

Cos' it could happen, right?

The long summer holiday is seen as the most likely time for parents to seek the procedure for their daughter as she has time to recover from what is usually a brutal ordeal before returning to school.

The procedure is in most cases carried out by older women who have no medical training. Anaesthetic is rarely used and the cuts are sometimes made with the most basic of tools such as razors or even pieces of glass.

Jason Bedore pleaded guilty to charges including impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample during his appearance before Judge Geoff Griffin.

At the time, police said the truck, which was driven by Bedore, left the roadway and struck a hydro pole, "shearing it off at the base." The incident left a number of homes and nearby businesses without power for about an hour.
You've gotta love what happens next.
When asked by Griffin if Hydro One had been in contact since the incident, Bedore said officials had called him personally.

"They want 14 grand ($14,000) for the pole and everything," he said. Bedore was given a one-year driving suspension and was ordered to pay an $800 fine.
Which got me thinking.

Why shouldn't there be a surcharge on stupid, dangerous behaviour that damages other people's lives and property?

I mean... David Miller is on the verge of issuing a "get up in the morning" tax in Toronto.

How about we, (meaning civil society), in addition to the inconsequential penalties imposed by the criminal justice system, levy charges to specifically compensate victims of crime, or pay for the larger societal costs inflicted on us by these assholes?

BREAKING: Ding, dong... Allah calling

A Pakistani cleric leading militants battling troops at a mosque in the capital, Islamabad, has been killed, Interior Ministry officials say.

“The government is using full force. This is naked aggression,” Mr. Ghazi said hours before his death. “My martyrdom is certain now.”
**********
Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder said Pakistani officials had been hoping for a peaceful end to the seven-day standoff at the Islamabad mosque after negotiators offered religious leaders inside a deal.

The deal was believed to have been arranged after Hussain met Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's president.

Hyder said Hussain had gone back to the mosque with an offer of safe passage, one of the demands of Abdul Rashid Ghazi, the mosque's deputy leader.
The Pakistani government has bent over backwards over the last week to try accommodate these hostage takers.

Obviously, these fanatics had no intention of giving it up. Just the other day they killed a Pakistani Special Forces Colonel who was supervising breaches in the wall to allow additional egress for hostages.

The fighting continues and two more soldiers are reported dead.

**********

BACKGROUND: Spoiling for a fight
Tensions at the mosque began several months ago when its students launched an anti-vice campaign in a quest to enforce Islamic law.

They also kidnapped several people, accused of involvement in prostitution, including seven Chinese, who were later freed.

Bitter street battles broke out on July 3 between police and the mosque's radical students, and it has been surrounded under a 24-hour shoot-on-sight curfew ever since.
No happy ending here.

And Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Sunday fast-tracked changes to immigration screening which match intelligence data with a person's travel and financial history to determine if they might be a security threat to Australia.
While Al Gore basks in the gazillion watt limelight of his power guzzling, carbon spewing, "celeb-fest", some people attempt to deal with a very real and imminent danger.
In 2002, bombs ripped through two nightclubs on Bali, a predominately Hindu island.

Members of the Southeast Asia militant group Jemaah Islamiah were convicted of the blasts, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australian holidaymakers.

Two years later the Australian embassy in Jakarta was bombed and in October 2005, 23 people, including four Australians, died in suicide attacks on Bali restaurants.
Big Al doesn't have to worry about stuff like that, with his "Secret Service for life" security detail and his million dollar mansions.

What your OHIP premiums...

Really pay for.

-- TORONTO -- Critics say the Liberals are turning a blind eye to health-care fraud by not quickly phasing out millions of old health cards following a recommendation from the province's auditor general months ago.

The old cards don't have photo identification or expiry dates, making them a target for fraud estimated at up to $22 million annually.

Auditor General Jim McCarter called for the government to "expedite'' the phase-out of the old cards in his December report because of suspected fraud.

Premier Dalton McGuinty said the government isn't being complacent about replacing the old cards. Although he still carries an old red-and-white card in his wallet, McGuinty said it's unacceptable that phasing them out has taken this long.
Despite the fact that there are 300,000 more OHIP cards in circulation... than there are people in Ontario... Dalton McGuinty isn't moving to shut off the taxpayer tap.

Can someone explain that one to me?

Wanna make a good impression...

On the judge? Make sure you bring your mummy to court.

-- NAPANEE -- Brant’s mother Deanna, a retired teacher, took the stand at Brant’s bail hearing Thursday, offering a $50,000 surety that Brant would not plan, incite or participate in illegal protests between now and his court date.
I guess Shawn forgot he was already in violation of his previous bail conditions... which, for most of us mere mortals, tends to mess up any pipedream of being released on bail on a new set of charges.

Still, a crack "social justice lawyer" can't let incontrovertible facts affect his strategy...
Peter Rosenthal, a Toronto-based social justice lawyer representing Brant, argued that conditions now are different from when Brant agreed on May 3 not to plan or participate in illegal protests.
It didn't take long for the Crown to point out the holes in the defense case...
Crown attorney Bob Morrison also took Brant to task when he took the stand on his own behalf, bringing up how open Brant was about breaching his May 3 bail conditions.

“You had no intention of ever complying, did you?” Morrison asked.

“Well...” Brant said. “I actually...no.”
In the absence of any convincing evidence that Brant wasn't going to go out and blockade the courthouse parking lot that very afternoon... Judge D.K. Kirkland decided to lodge Mr. Brant at the local "Crowbar Motel" for the next 7 weeks.
“It would be dangerous for him to be released at this time because he’s said ‘there’s more to come,’” Kirkland said after a nearly three-hour session.
The preliminary hearing will be Aug. 27.

Brant said that despite his promise to appear for a bail hearing tomorrow, local OPP officers tried to arrest him yesterday morning.

"The OPP had blocked the road and, I believe, were attempting to try and do an intervention," he said, adding that he maintained a full force of men.

Now it's true this bill wouldn't save lives, or put any money back in taxpayers pockets, but if parliamentarians can't even stop people from harassing you while you're eating dinner, what good are they?

Ottawa has exempted a series of telephone-reliant organizations from the ban and left open a loophole that many businesses can exploit.

Political parties, registered charities, pollsters and newspapers will still be able to make unsolicited calls to Canadians.

And they wonder why...

Infant mortality is exponentially higher in the aboriginal population...

-- SECHELT, B.C. -- Members of the Sechelt First Nation, on the Sunshine Coast north of Vancouver, have held an emergency meeting following an ugly incident with RCMP.

Several members of the band, including a seven-month-old baby, were pepper-sprayed Monday as RCMP officers faced what they say was an unruly crowd.
I love how the media automatically tries to paint this as police brutality... completely ignoring the legal and safety issues. The driver refused to stop for a police car, then he ran a roadblock... which suggests, at minimum, some toxicological or intellectual impairment.
Members of the First Nation say a local soccer coach was using his pickup truck to drive several team members through the reserve to celebrate a tournament victory when police intervened.

Police said that 10 people were crowded into the back of the truck and that the driver refused orders to stop.
One question here.

Was the baby with one of the ten people standing up in the back of the truck... or did mom, unlike any sane parent... just wade into the melee looking to beat on a cop?

Yup... mom wanted to fight.
"The child's mother was the spouse of the person we were trying to arrest," Linteau said. "She also became very combative and was trying to push at the officers and trying to interfere. It's unfortunate that she would bring a baby into a situation like that."
That's one word. It's also crazy and a criminal offense.

Somebody please call Childrens Aid.

UPDATE: Well, I guess he could've shot somebody

Instead of using pepper spray.
The RCMP today defended a police officer's decision to use pepper spray Monday to control a "confrontational" crowd in Sechelt that was celebrating a Vancouver soccer tournament victory by Sechelt band soccer teams.
There's just no keeping these folks happy.

"Sheik Google"

Unlike their illiterate, raggedy-ass compatriots in the Khandahar trenches...

Their indoctrination and expertise comes from "Sheik Google" and the world wide web.

"To a large extent, the internet has replaced actual training camps as a source of instruction and inspiration for militant Muslims," says the AFP analysis.

Everything they need can be found on the hundreds of extremist websites: how to make bombs, avoid surveillance, achieve physical fitness and justify violence on religious grounds.

What's another $62,500?

Of course, that's only one of the dream jobs in David Miller's Toronto-stan...

There are a lot of things Toronto does not have but we now have a "Fairness Monitor."

Wonder who got that job? Do they have a degree in fairness?

Should we allot more dollars to make sure the fairness monitor's hiring was a fair process?

In light of current events...

I have to ask,,, do Muslim physicians take the Hippocratic Oath?

-- BBC -- Eight people arrested in connection with failed car bombings in Glasgow and London all have links with the National Health Service, the BBC has learned.

Seven are believed to be doctors or medical students, while one formerly worked as a laboratory technician.
In one positive sign from the Muslim community, there is some disavowal regarding this latest terror campaign.
Speaking at a Muslim Council of Britain press conference, Dr Muhammed Abdul Bari said those who sought to kill or maim innocent people were "enemies of all of Muslims and non-Muslims".

UPDATE: Voice of reason
-- LONDON, July 3 (Reuters) -- Iraqi doctors working in Britain expressed anger on Tuesday that one of their number could be involved in the London and Glasgow bomb plots, saying they feared it could harm their reputation.

"A lot of people will just quickly point the finger at Middle Eastern doctors now, I know it and I guess to an extent I can't blame them," said Mudher al-Khairallah an Iraqi-British internist at Ninewells hospital in Dundee, Scotland.

02 July 2007

Maybe that night, it just wasn't...

The will of Allah...

Only a technical fault stopped hundreds being injured and possibly dying. The bombs were rigged to go off when the mobile phones – the detonators – were called.

The bombers called the Tiger Tiger car twice and the other car four times but the bombs failed to detonate. Police were able to use information from the phones to trace the suspects.

Al-Qaida is planning a large-scale terror attack on a US target this summer, a senior CIA official told ABC News.

"This is reminiscent of the warnings and intelligence we were getting in the summer of 2001," the official said.

The Fog of War

No comfort here... but it's always better to know, than not to know.

-- MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Canadian Pte. Robert Costall and an American soldier were shot from behind by bursts from a machine-gun fired from a compound manned by U.S. special forces last year in Afghanistan during an insurgent attack, a U.S. army report says.

One account in the report says the gunner shot at two friendly positions in quick succession during the fierce battle early on March 29, 2006.
They will be remembered.

Life of Shawn

Yessir... it's another action-packed week down in Deseronto... good thing nobody has a dirty, filthy J-O-B to interfere with all this questing after social justice...

And thank goodness for Shawn Brant...

Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Attendee: Brought peace?

Reg: Oh, peace - shut up! There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all.

Dissenter: Uh, well, one.

Reg: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.
By the way... who is paying Shawn Brant's bills?

Hey... I just worry about his welfare.

The six stages of e-mail

Email is a whole new way of being friends with people: intimate but not, chatty but not, communicative but not; in short, friends but not.

What a breakthrough. How did we ever live without it?

I have more to say on this subject, but I have to answer an Instant Message from someone I almost know.

Here's how overtaxed we are

Pity those poor deputy-ministers... because we all know... if you're a middle class working stiff with a mortgage and a couple of kids, making 40 thousand bucks a year... your life is just a bed of roses.

-- THUNDER BAY, ONT. -- The number of high-ranking federal civil servants receiving a special bonus when they retire from the "stresses" of running their government departments has more than tripled in the last decade.

The bonus puts an average of more than $23,000 a year into the pockets of those who qualify.
If $23,000 is the bonus, what obscene amount of money do these people get in salary and perks?

And the sheeple get sheared yet again.

Second doctor arrested...

I guess taking lives is more exciting than saving them...

Police said one man arrested in Glasgow is Bilal Abdulla.

According to the British General Medical Council's register, a man named Bilal Talal Abdul Samad Abdulla was registered in 2004 and trained in Baghdad.

Staff at Royal Alexandra Hospital said one suspect was a doctor of Middle Eastern or Iraqi origin who worked there.

UPDATE: Aussies bag third terror doc
A 27-YEAR-old Gold Coast doctor was arrested at Brisbane Airport last night in connection with Britain's foiled car bomb terror plot, authorities have confirmed.

The doctor, a registrar at Gold Coast Hospital, is the eighth person held over the foiled terror plot to detonate car bombs in London and the attack using a flaming 4WD on Glasgow Airport.

Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock said it was believed the man was seeking to leave Australia when he was arrested at the Brisbane International Airport, he did not have a return ticket.

But there is a fear that members of this gang could be so-called "clean skins," people who developed an affinity with al-Qaeda through Internet connections or personal beliefs, without making any actual contact.

The yellow brick road...

Of warm, fuzzy liberalism.

Remember after 9/11, when all the leftbots insisted that arthritic 75 year old nuns with glaucoma... be treated exactly the same as 25 year old middle-eastern males in the departure lines at airports?

Here's the logical extension of that idea.

-- NASHVILLE, July 1 (AP) -- Tennesseeans on Sunday faced a new requirement to show identification before buying beer in stores, no matter how old they appear to be.

Tennessee is the first state to make universal carding mandatory, the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association said. The law does not apply to beer sales in bars and restaurants, and it does not cover wine and liquor.

“It’s the stupidest law I ever heard of,” said Comer Wilson, 66. “You can see I’m over 21.”
Let's stop this nonsense now.
